LCD's... Vertical Sync ON or OFF?

I just got my Viewsonic vx924 19" LCD today and have it running on DVI with 1280x1024 @ 60Hz.

I was playing CS:S with Vertical Sync on (at 60Hz) and noticed that the mouse felt a little laggy - enough to make me miss when trying to be precise in quick firefights. On the CRT I replaced, I don't think there was any problem like this.

I turned Vertical Sync off, and the laggy feeling went away.

It's just that I DO mind the occasional picture tearing that it makes me want to keep VSync on.

Is this just something I'll have to get used to with LCD monitors?

Try typing fps_max 60 in the console. If the game runs at a higher framerate than your display can output, it can give you the perception of input lag.

I just bought a 19" LCD and have a new rig in the mail, and was thinking the same thing. With my new vid card(7800GT) and a max res at 1280x1024, I was thinking of using vsync to prevent tearing on my games, especially old ones. How many games support a max fps?

ImageQuest L70S

I always use VSync ON or I get irritating tearing like a bastard.

Do all TFT displays do this?

If the framerate goes above 60FPS and the monitor is at 60hertz which is what most LCD's are locked at in DVI mode, yes you will get tearing.

So either....

1. Crank up visuals to reduce higher FPS
2. Use VSYNC but suffer the dreaded "30fps cutoff" lag
3. Use a CRT
4. Wait until SED displays come out in 2007.

i've been able to alleviate that cutoff by enabling triple buffering.. in pretty much all my games vsync+triple buffering = same performance as no vsync.

Try turning off vsync but completely max all other settings. It is what I have to do for some of the HL2 games. Vsync pushes the card harder than the cranked settings for some of the HL2 addons.

Basically it pushes your card without limiting when an image can be displayed. Hopefully it will naturally limit your framerate to prevent tearing.

Oh? Sorry, I have to bump this thread to ask: Is this really true?

Yes I believe that it is. Cranking the visuals, enabling triple buffering and in some cases V-Sync will eliminate or drasticly reduce tearing. That's what I have to do. I try not to use V-Sync,. but it depends on the game. Some games the tearing isn't that bad if it doesn't at all. Others its constant and V-Sync is needed.
