Is it me or are the 81.94 drivers made to overclock?

I just updated from the 81.85 to the 81.94 and now I can clock at an insane speed!

I have an EVGA with the simple fan mod.

Core is at 521 mem is at 1440!!
I got a 9153 in 3dmark 2k5 at this speed([email protected]) with no artifacts

The best I can do with the 81.85s were 520/1320 before I start having artifacts in 3d marks.

Now I'm really second guessing myself with the new GTX512. I wonder if stepping up and spending 150 dollars is worth the 600 extra points in 3dmark.

Anyone know if you can take the face covers off the new GTX512? I am thinking about modding it with two cpu fans on both sides of the center fan....then overclock that beast to 630/1900!

You went up over 100Mhz in RAM speed with no lock ups or artifacting? WOW :)

what are you using to O/C your card? coolbits or something else? if so, which version of Coolbits are you using?

RivaTuner 2.0 RC 15.7

Find it at guru3d.com under downloads/top downloads

^ okay thanks. thats the one I just D/Led. I wanted to be sure to try out the same one that you're using.

The most success I've had overclocking my nVidia based video cards is with Powerstrip. After I sold off my 9800 Pro and went back to the green side Riva Tuner and Coolbits didn't work, Powerstrip worked like a charm. The only down side to it is it constantly runs and takes up some CPU cycles.

drivers do not change your memory voltage, timings, or settings, so I doubt the drivers had much to do with it... prolly just random occurance.

well thats kinda interesting I guess I will have to try them out and see if anything changes

I agree, but that's a helluva a random occurance! FTR, what 3dmark are you using. I find the nature demo in 03 to be the best for arties.

My mem's at 1380 now, and I see arties at 1400 with the 81.87's. I'll give it a shot after work and see if the 81.94's do anything. After all, ATI's readjusting their mem controller with drivers, why can't we get hardware ups with drivers :p <--yes, I know sounds stupid, but I dream, eh?

Meh. I just use Coolbits for the clocks and ATITool for the artifacts. If it can't do an hour with no artifacts, then it's not truly stable IMO.

Yes, ATITool's built-in artifact detection works with NV cards.

And what is this "simple fan mod"?

you take off the face plate of the 7800 GTX and strap on a cpu fan/92mm fan of your liking directly onto the heatsink.

I use strip ties you can find with your garbage bags....this also doesn't "void" the warranty(it does but no one can tell if you modded it) because you don't physically do anything to the card besides taking the face cover off.

You will see a 5-10 degrees drop in temp.

ok - I think it must be that in this driver version CoolBits pass/fail test has changed to be a lot more forgiving about what passes and what does not... so it's essentially being more aggressive. but nothing on the card has changed. That's got to be it.

This sounds kind of........................mmmmmm............you know..........

Haha, it looks like it'd work. Take off the plastic cover to expose the heatsink fins themselves and blast air onto it. :p Wouldn't look very attractive, though, maybe even "ghetto."

I call shens.

I agree. I have seen a couple times where it looks like I overclocked my memory to the 1450's but when then RivaTuner only shows the 1300...

Yeah, can you post a pic of this mod?

I am very curious.

If I could post how I'd imagine it, I would... I could actually photochop what it might look like..

But I didn't do the mod, no need.
