Granted I've been in this business for almost 9 years. So as a result, theres been alot of time for these things to happen, and I've owned A LOT of computers. So the odds were stacked in favor of there being a "yes" to all those questions.

Qualifier. I've been a tech since '85. I've worked on well over 10,000 computers.

1. More than I can count. Starting with A Seagate 40 Mb MFM ST-251-1 with a "stiction" problem. Right now, I have my friend's "Deathstar" in my freezer. I'm hoping I can image it to another drive.

2. Don't use them.

3. Don't use them, either.

4. Memorex white label with blue writing. Labels bubbled up while sitting in a drawer in jewel cases.

5. Yes, but not in the last 12 years or so.

6. Yes, but had backups fail on me, too. Since the second generation of CD-R drives, I've been backing up to CD/DVD using UDF/ISO

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?
I've had one start making bad noises, and presumed it would fail soon. I've also had friends who came to me with bad hard drives.

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these)
I use them, yes, never failed.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
No

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
No.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
No.

I've had a few HDD fail on me over the years.

I backup to tape weekly for my home office machine machine, and monthly for my personal files (photos). at the office the servers and workstation files a backed up daily to local tape and weekly to redundant remote NAS

Do you want any more elaborate answers? Or are "yes" & "no" good enough for what you need?

4. media failure only because of physical damage - multiple drive failures.

5. yes - because of reformat and rebuild of RAID array.

6. external usb drive and CD-R's & DVD-R's

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?

I've had two fail on me, but it was related to power supply problems.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?

I have multiple hard drives using backup software such as ViceVersa to back up folders from one drive to the other. I considered Raid, but I didn't like the risk that power failure would cause issues with the array. I basically have a really soft raid, as I have independent access to the disks.

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you? Yes, it overheated because it had no air flow. I put a fan on it and it started working fine again. My dad had two IBM Deskstars fail on him.

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these) I've used them and they have not failed.

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these) Never used.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you? Yes. I have a few coasters.

-No
3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these)
-No
4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
-Yes, It would not eject the cd-r and I used a small poker to eject it thru the small hole in the face plate and when it ejected the internal plastic mechanism broke internally!
5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
-Yes
6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
-Yes Norton Ghost, incremental backups that I am currently using to restore a host drive.

No, only had "one" real, and the internal drives I placed in diy boxes have been fine so far

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
Yes, lost about a 100 cdr's that way, now I know why cheap cds are cheap, they don't last long.

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
No, but given the times I have had bad drives I have a plethora of filerecovering tools ready nowadays.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
Not really, I tend to place the most important data on several computers though.

The number of failed drives might seem high, but I've had more than 35 drives in that time, so it's less than a fifth that died. Still high but not alarming given that they are mechanical.

Yes, IBM DeskStars, but also several SATA 250 GB maxtors and a few Western Digitals

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these)
Yes. Sandisk Cruzer 1GB, stopped halfway through a file transfer, never worked again. Data was lost. Maybe a voltage spike from the USB port?

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these)
Yes. Seems to have been the controller on the enclosure, but it also damaged the drive.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
yes.

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
YES. This was a BIG problem. Deleted over the network, so it didn't go to the recycle bin.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
No other than a bad batch of CDR's that actually came apart.

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?

Full daily backups of critical files to another drive. Weekly (ie. when I remember to do it) backups of this data to external media (DVD-RW)

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
Yes, I accidently shift+deleted my Outlook PST. I was unable to recover it at the time using Ontrack EZ Recovery.
6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
Yes, I have an external 120GB HDD that I only turn on once a week to manually backup specific folders that have changed. I also burn the most critical items to DVD+RW once a month.

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?
Yes, 1 personal drive. Also, I have repaired numerous computers that had failed drives.

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these)
Yes, it was more of a thumb drive, didn't have a writing pen attached, regardless, it didn't work after being left in my pocket during a trip through the washing machine.

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these)
Yes, replaced the drive, the housing still worked.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
Not personally, but have repaired around 10 pcs that had burned media shatter in the drive.

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
No.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
Yes.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
RAID 1+0 on my primary (4x 36GB Raptor), 2x 200GB drives (no RAID), 1x 300GB drive (no RAID). Everything dumps to my 300GB for backup. Then once a month I dump that to DVD+RW and store off-site.

Asgorath said:
1. Yes. A 6GB Maxtor that probably ran fine for a number of years.

2. Yes but from physical abuse. AFAIK it would still work otherwise.

3. No, but I've only been using one for about 3 months.

4. Yes tons. But they were the 99c/100 disk kind that barely hold together in a drive

5. Yea, but that's because I have the recycle bin turned off

6. I backup my media 1/1 to an external drive manually, and run Windows Backup to a file server in my basement every night

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?
Yep. Some sort of Maxtor, 100gb maybe? Putting it in a baggie, then in a bucket of ice, and I was able to recover what I needed, then toss it. And it went bad during a LAN party

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these)
Never used one

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these)
Never used onee

Yes, I've deleted files accidentally, but never really tried to recover them.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
Nope.
