One of the most RIDICULOUS case mods EVER. Good for a laugh!!

No shit. I think i'm gonna have to find some sort of helmet that keeps retarded stuff like this seeping into my brain.

LOL That's why I have my iPod in my cubicle, cuz I deal with some 'tards on a daily basis. Good tunes (currently Van Halen's "Girl Gone Bad") distracts me from dropping to their level. :)

Give her credit where it is due...

The girl was able to take a harddrive and hook it up to another PC and recover the DATA...

I would die of a heart attack if my sister, for instance, even touched a harddrive of mine...

I'm sure you all have your own examples of self-stupidity. It's always the geeks that make fun of other people for not knowing 'common sense' things. Quite a few of the 'PC techs' I encounter have no people skills to speak of and would struggle to survive any other occupation.

I'm a dude, and I'll totally disagree with that statement. There are some quite tech savvy girls out there. Some of them are members here of the [H].

It's like I tell my mother when she goes off on "minorities"... It's not the fact that they're "minorities" (or in this case, women). It's the fact that they suck! There are plenty of "minorities" that are damned awesome, as well as some damned awesome women, and plenty of white guys that are the biggest idiots you'll ever meet that make this woman look like a frickin' genius.

If a woman's qualified, I'm gonna back her up. If given a choice between a guy that's marginal and a woman that kicks ass, I'm gonna pick the woman every time. The reason for the lack of qualified women is that they're intimidated by statements like that.

My girlfriend is so technically savvy, it'll make your head spin. She can't build a computer (YET) but she understands the principals of it more than you or I did when we just started. I go to tell her how to do things on the computer in simplistic ways because I'm used to dealing with morons, and before I'm done with the first step, she's completed what she needs to do.

<Sighs> Women <shakes head>

Proof if any were needed that women working with any technology should be supervised at all times

Screw that! Tell her to sit down and ALWAYS do it yourself...that way you know its done right. My g/f will NEVER touch my PC, which is why I locked the side panel JUST to be sure :D And only I know where the key is

Stupidity does not discriminate based on gender, race or any other qualification.

I have never done anything this idiotic... on purpose. I once epoxied some heat sinks onto a new video card and, soon after, upgraded my MB only to find that a heat sink was hitting the memory. So... I took out my trusty dremmel to lop off a bit of the heat sink and, one slip of the hand later, I had a nice deep gash and many cut traces. I never was able to get it to work again, tried restoring the traces, etc. I basically threw away 250 bucks on a paper weight. I was a dumbass. It can happen to anyone.

I remember a little while ago, I was working on this case taking out a 5 1/4 bay cover before a hockey game (goal...i was playing). So i was pushing in from the inside and it let loose so quick that my finger went with it and right into the sharp bay ceiling....lets say i had a nice gash in my knuckle and couldnt play my game...damn my coach was pissed. we all do stupid stuff but theres a line between stupid and you-should-touch-computers-at-all

Well I for one know there are plenty of woman with the skillzz as I have worked with them. Ontop of that I tought my girlfriend how to build a pc and she built her own workstation dual mp2200 2gig raid etc no problems compared to some of the techs that have worked for me and it was more of a pain to have them "build" a machine I would have to take it apart to fix all their screw ups.

wow

bahahahaJerryLewis_002.jpg

pffft I've drilled rivits and even used a dremel to cut up a case without removing any parts :p I did hold up a damp paper towel on the opposite side to try to catch any baddies. Why? Well you know how much work it is to remove and put back a watercooling setup from a super small case? Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I say hire her, most jobs are quite boring and she's sure to keep your job interesting. And worst case you get sick of her but no problem, you'll have a long list of reasons to fire her. You can't lose.

Rofl, that's a good story :D . I did some really stupid things when I was younger, but nothing like this! I'm not going to say she's stupid because she's a woman, I'm going to say she's just plain stupid  .

Yeah guys do stupid things too... like the time someone ordered a PCI express graphics card (7800?) and cut off some of the pins so it would fit in his AGP slot...

The rivets were good, I had a chuckle at that.

Funny how she was smart enough to know how to get the data off and yet went at her case with a drill...as if they wanted to make sure you never got the hard drive out?

About the whole women thing, I know plenty of savvy girls and plenty of idiotic guys. It's people over 50 that I don't trust with my technology:) hehe

You know what I just realized? Doesn't she realize that that's an aftermarket case, and as such, somebody had to get the drive in there in the first place? LOL Obviously the installer didn't drill out the rivets and install the rivets to put the drive in. LOL

My Father in Law (I think he's 57 or 58) - Needless to say when I can't fix it - I take it to him, HE CAN.

Bigotry is bigotry - and should be...
Yes that particular woman is lacking the skills to get a HDD out of a case... but she is not representative of all women...
That said, I'd NEVER LET MY WIFE INSIDE MY CASE... she is not tech savvy in that way, but she can program a Sanyo VI-2300 with one hand... (but then again she works at Sprint PCS)...

You have to fry alot of shit before you get the "honor" of being called a tech. This is a good start for her. She was able to completly gutt a pc without physicaly destroying it. Hell she is a woman, and was smart enough to know how to drill out a rivet ( hell most of my friends cant do that). Now the fun part will be watching here put in every brass stand of she can get her hands on, in her new case. That should make for some good light shows, and smells. Mental note, i did have a water block fall off, and onto the agp card, and made neat noises.

Certain cases will have the side panel behind the mainboard riveted in place if there is no need to access the other side. Case in point, Certain ANTEC models that use removeable drive cages, and "toolless' drive rails. This case model was one such sterling example.

She had no reason to be trying to access the backplane whatsoever. The "tech" never used her noodle what she did and STILL had the gall to drop a resume off. What was she thinking when she did that? What was she trying to prove?

"Well... I was modding my PC one night while wearing my crash helmet..."

It's the gall of trying to drop it off for warranty that makes me LOL!

On a more sarcastic note:

It's a good thing her tech savvy lent her the appreciation for the little sparkies. :)

Doesn't she know those darn things run on smoke? They stop working when you let the smoke out!

Perhaps her true mistake was in circumventing the smoke flow pipes by adding the miniscule smoke bypass lines. They were obviously inferior in quality to the smoke runs on the mommy-board.

I think her attempted mod was interesting in a "MODDER-from-HELL" point of view, but it lacked a certain panache. A wet-drill or a CnC machine to drill out those rivets would have been a much more gooder and high techy thing to do. Anyone else agree?

/sarcasm

On the "Oops, I goofed" side :

Don't try to re-install a 286 MB while drunk, in a dark room, at 2am. You tend to be off by one pin on the MB power connector. It let's the smoke out of the smoke reservoirs.

The upside was, having no $ to replace it and plenty of time (after sobering up and stopping the cursing), the only thing that blew was the input filter cap. Replaced with something close enough for rock-and-roll, tested, replaced New 286-20 that blew with old 286-16 that was the reason for pulling the MB in the first place and went right back to playing "Wing Commander".

I'm not sure who it's attributed to, but I can tell you: "The two most common elements in the universe are Hydrogen and Stupidity."

My friend did something like that yesterday. He comes into my room telling me his computer wouldn't turn on after installing another stick of 512 RAM, and that the room smelled like smoke.

I come in not knowing if the smell is smoke or not (his roommate leaves food out so it always smells). Check PSU, it's ok. Thinking the motherboard is dead from ESD. Check new RAM and notice one of the pin traces is black and smells like the room. The RAM slot where the pin lined up was black/melted... it turns out he installed the RAM backwards. I guess only one side was in the slot.

Couple hours later, board is working fine (aside from that one slot)

We hook up all PCs that have been in for service in front of the customers before they leave the store so that the customers can confim that what they wanted done was actually completed to their satisfaction...it also gives us a level of certainty that yes the box was working properly before it left, the customer confirmed this, and they signed that it WAS working properly.

So we get a guy who picks up his computer, takes it home, and then calls us the next day. But it wasn't a friendly, wow you guys did a great job type call...it was I want to rip someone a new one type call. I had to end up getting on the phone and trying to help the guy...he claimed his PC would not power on...when I tried to get him to try a few things he absolutely refused. When I asked him what he had done with the PC when he got it home, he said "he didn't do a damn thing". So at this point I was like, well I am extremely sorry for the inconvenience, please bring it in whenever you have the time, and just bring it in and I will personally look at it.

So later that day he comes in all pissy. I put it up on our checkin bench and what do you know, it doesn't do anything. I had already reviewed his service records and the only thing we had done was fix a driver issue, so it was unlikely that anything we had done caused the problem, but I decided to open up his case and take a look. Loose cards, or power cables have happened on the way home from a trip to the shop, some people don't properly fasten their boxes down and the ride home can be a bit bumpy.

So I am checking the cards, they all seem seated properly..I check the power/reset switch connections, I start checking the power cables and when I get to his main atx power connector I notice one of the RAM modules is somewhat hanging out of the slot. The guy is starting to get pissy again, and he starts to complain about our shoddy work. So as I am reviewing our checkin notes (to see how much RAM it came in with) I am asking the guy ARE you sure that nothing was done to the box after it left here. He was like "look, I know my computer, and I know that no one touched it, all we did was hookup the cables and nothing happened. At this point the notes had stated one stick of 256MB and I new that that stick of RAM was NOT in the computer originally...so I asked him Is it possible that someone else had access to the PC and you not know about it. He started to get beligerant and claimed I should just fix a problem we caused.

So my next step (which I happened to take GREAT PLEASURE in) was to ask him to look at the RAM slots. I said, when you came in, this system only had one stick of 256...now it has two sticks and the second stick is in BACKWARDS and is shorting out the system, thus causing it not to boot. The look on the guys face was priceless...so I said in my best managerial speak so as not to be accusatory...where did this RAM come from if you didn't touch the PC? He stood there for a moment...and said "Oh yeah, my son tried to install some RAM in it" After all the bitching at us...after bending over backwards for the guy.....

Ahhhhhhhhhh hahhhhhhhhhhhh.

That ladies and gentleman is why good and detailed note talking is imperative...becuase dishonest mofo's out there are the only thing that piss me off more than stoopid people. And if you haven't had the pleasure of dealing with these type of people yet, then count yourself lucky and take steps now to ensure you don't get bent over...

The lady that drilled the rivets out...yeah that was bad, yeah she was a moron...but she wasn't out to screw me over...she was clever enough to admit to her own stupidity. :D

Kinda like the girl who tought that turning the compressed air can upside down would allow it to clean better!

heh me and my friends do that... but we spray each other with it. Funny story actually.... my friend picks up $20 off my other friends desk and palms it. He then goes to the guy who the $20 belongs to and offer him $20 to put the can down his pants, upside down, and spray himself with it. Needless to say he does, greedy for the $20. Result was something like this "Oh this doesn't hurt so baaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH OH MY GOD IT BURNS IT BURNS!!!!!" Yeah apparently he still has freezing burns down there from that experience

lol...

I was getting mad at an Emachine case about a week ago, but I figured it out (eventually). And it was a sucky case. Other than that, the first time I did anything hardware-related was putting in a CD-ROM drive with my dad (who was over 50...) who decided to use a dremel to make the thing fit past the front cover instead of taking it off.

This has been bothering me a while - my dad blew up on me (shouting, pounding his fist on the table, spit spraying...) saying that seti@home had destroyed the hard drive of our family computer and folding@home was going to destroy this particular Emachine. I had just mentioned getting a better heatsink/fan because the one in it sounds like a vacuum cleaner, and gets 48 idle/ 63 load... He also speculated in his frenzied rage that folding@home was an evil ploy to steal identities... No use arguing with him either.

This story is second only to the one I heard about a guy trying to unplug his screen and ended up ripping out the vid card through the back. I kinda doubt if thats a true story though, I mean, how can you do that?

Not seen the video card out the back, but this girl on whose computer I worked DID pull the video header off her motherboard...true story. Brought it in so I could add memory, then had to replace motherboard AND CPU (it was turned on at the time) just to add the RAM.

Not a woman thing...it's lack of knowledge. Ignorance of a thing is normal when you've never had to do it before.

There are plenty of tech-savvy women out there, but I will say that they are harder to come by. The woman who drilled the rivets out to get at the harddrive isn't a complete idiot imho...she just lacks common sense. She obviously knew the basics of PC's since she was able to recover data from one PC to another. I can't say another member of my family can do that without my help. My guess is that she just got frustrated and a bit full of herself in thinking she knew better than "those idiots" so she gave up on trying to get the HD out.

A simple look at the case's manual would fix that though...

As for stupid techs...here is one. I have a friend who bought the components for a new PC last summer. I helped him pick out the components for his system while on a budget. Well, he got his components and a day after he called me because his system wouldn't boot.

I went to his place and looked at it all...first off, the wiring was a mess. He didn't know how to wire things from a PSU properly. You know how many components have both a male and female plug so you can chain them together (i.e. fans)? He thought that BOTH had to be connected at all times. Yeah, I guess that isn't too bad, but it gets better.

I decided to remove the HSF and reinstall the cpu. When pulling off the HSF, the cpu came along with it. Why? Because he used way too much thermal paste and a suction developed between the HSF and IHS. I was baffled because I'd never had a problem removing the HSF before (and yes, I did slightly twist it back and forth beforehand...it didn't help).

I then asked him how installed his cpu, and for him to show me. Low and behold he started shoving it in the socket without lifting up the lever! No wonder the CPU came out with the HSF...it wasn't installed correctly.

After a lot of testing we came to the conclusion, however, that the graphics card was faulty(Leadtek 6800 GT). He put in a RMA for it, sent if off, and got it back a month later. It wasn't fixed. Many months later, he still hasn't called them about his investment, or demanded a replacement. I don't get it...

Oh, man... customers. "Woman" isn't the operative word here, but "customer" is.

I've been* at Best Buy for 13 months (8 in PC sales, 5 on the Geek Squad) and customers can be terrible. That story (while entertaining) didn't make me laugh, but made me feel sick... because it's people like that that make retail hell.

*"was" is probably more fitting - I put in my two-weeks notice yesterday because I'm starting a better job soon.

That mod was great, it would've been fine if she only thought to vaccuum up the metal 'dust'.

Sounds like every single person over 50 I know. Everything is a conspiracy ;)

lol, too true. I wonder what makes them so suspicious.

another minor incident - trying to teach my grandma how to use a computer is a real headache. She can't even use the mouse or keyboard very well. Once I told her over the phone about how you can delete letters with the backspace key on the keyboard, and when I went over there later I found her sitting at her piano looking for the backspace key. She still demands that I teach her how to use it because she bought it to send emails. (btw, she has alzheimers desease. keep folding...)

People that really hate computers is one of the few things that enrage me. They're just ignorant. But then, if it weren't for ignorant people there wouldn't be anyone willing to pay us money to fix their computers.

Anyway, I wish there were more tech-savy women... :(

hahaha this is kinda funy that i came across this because i just built a computer for my mom with that case about an hour ago, the even funnier part is that when i was going to buy the case a woman had just gotten fired from comp usa because she did not take the case i was buying to the service counter as i walked around the store with it, and yes i bet your woundering how i know she got fired, my friend works there...lol hope your buddy takes better care fo the case

I agree. I was a tech and tech manager @ compusa for 5+ years. It's amazing the stuff I've seen:

Someone bought all the components to build a system but refused to pay us to assemble it, claiming that they knew all about computers and did it all the time. Came back in the later in afternoon because it wasn't working and it must be because we sold her defective stuff. She made sure to tell the customer service folks that the stuff had to be defective and that they were idiots for not just exchanging her stuff (and having us remove the old stuff and install the new stuff for free) because she knew what she was doing. Customer service calls me out to see if I'll check it quickly. I didn't even have to take the computer off the counter - they already had the side panel off and I could see the problem: she didn't install any motherboard standoffs, so she had shorted out the motherboard directly on the case. Her complaints that the rear ports didn't line up with the holes made sense, then.

Had a couple people do the "computer doesn't work when i got it home" only to find they had done something to it.

HAHA. Damn humans.

I had a customer send in his xbox for me to repair a while back that his dog had pissed on. I told him I couldnt fix it cause it was a health hazard, which it is but I really didnt want to play with his fried pissed on powersupply. He tells me his dog is healthier than I am and there is nothing wrong with his dogs piss. So after telling him over and over that I was not going to fix it he finally got that and said I didnt know what the hell I was doing and called me a dumb $hit.
