Abit actually came forward and prior to their settlement started repairing MB's with bad capacitors, and agreed to a settlement fairly quickly.

MSI finally lost their side of the lawsuit and will repair thier MB's MFGed between 99 and 02.

Hopefully the rest of the MFG's who used the bad caps will soon come forward without having to go through the whole lawsuit process.

I think just about every electronics manufacture in business has been hit by this scandel in one way or another.

Kinda like a bad run of Ford Pinto's :)

Maybe I'm just lucky, but in the 10 years that I have been fixing computers, I have never run into an ABIT or an MSI mb with cap issues, it's always been either Soltek or Machspeed for me where there has been cap issues.

Hey guys, I'm not too clear on what this settlement actually addresses, but I was wondering if this may be related? The time frame is somewhat different though. I posted about this in another thread http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=965253 . I just saw this thread and was wondering if I could call MSI and point them to this settlement. It pretty much messed up my usb connector and some other wires and burned my case.

That looks more like a Capacitor that was installed backwards. You can actually blow up electrolytic capacitors that way. (as in a small bang, like a black cat firecracker)

My Abit KR7A-133r blew 3 capacitors early last week. I called Abit's RMA center left a message and the got back to me an hour later with an RMA number. I'm just hoping it doesn't take to long to get a replacement. Any one with any experience with RMA replacement from Abit what I can expect for a time frame???

In the 9 years I've been a computer tech I've seen plenty of Abit, MSI, EpoX, Soyo, ECS, Soltek, Apple (iMac G5) and other motherboards with capacitor issues.

All that headache over a little bit of botched industrial espionage.. :D

Got off the phone with Abit earlier and they will be replacing my KR7A-133R with a NF7-S2G

They recieved the bad mobo from me on Oct 27th and they said it would take 10 business days to process. and it was 10 business to the day.

I sent the request to MSI, you must have the original purchase receipt. I told them it was lost. That was maybe two months ago. No reply. They probably have one little old lady sitting in the back of a unheated factory on top of a mountain, with her oil lamp and wood burning stove running, all alone. Snow blowing through the wall, poor lady. You really believe they have the better part of their support dedicated to this ? Sorry to say, but I doubt this old slot 1 board is gonna get any attention from them. Oh well it was a good board once upon a time. On to another project.

I lost one ABIT board to this, but a ton more IBM 300XL's at work. It was easy to tell. You'd get a ticket saying "System rebooted all of a sudden, and now it just continually reboots loading windows".

I have them take the cover off and look around the processor. They were always bulging, smoking, leaking or any combination of above.

IBM was good about fixing them until they went out of warranty. I don't recall they ever extended it.
