Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

Unfortunately The mod won't be at Digital Life--due to LIFE ;) --Yet more delays--I'm gettin' hitched next week so planning for it has pushed the Doom3 reveal even further down the road--Plus some extra details on the case construction has added to the fun. I did however bring several other mods to the event so come check'm out :D

Crimson,

I made it to the DigitalLife Show on Saturday. I was very disappointed not to see the Doom 3 Case, but your other cases looked beautiful anyway. I had never seen them before in real life!

Congrats on the marriage, hope it's the start of many happy years.

I said it 3+ months ago.... that I was worried that Quake 4 would be out by the time the case is finished and people would say "Blah, Doom3 old news!"

Well its official now, time to throw away "old ass Doom3" case and start Quake 4 case!! ;) j/k

What are your plans when you do finish it ? (after you enter it in to some contests to win! )

Ebay to highest bidder?
Offer to ID software ?
etc ?

LoL..well as long as a new damn nVidia card doesnt come out before i'm done...I'll be ok. After the wedding this weekend I'll be working day and night to finish up :D

Congrats Crim!!, best wishes from us!! :)

You must be horribly busy if this is all that has happened in a month's time. I can't wait to see some serious work get done on this thing and to get it finished. You're behind on starting the Quake 4 case. :p

Crim, I have to say things are starting to shape up, it's really looking close to done.
But I think you might need to update your hardware again. LOL :p

Congratulations on the marriage!

But you have to make sure the new wife doesn't slow done the modding!
Your Fan Boyz where here first! :D

Ok, take your week, AND then FINISH this thing. I want to see this finished...

(on a side not, off topic - as soon as I can get my cam drivers on this computer I'll start my build ....)

Hehehe--thanks man--and everyone who sent good wishes. I appreciate the sentiments--we are a good pair..and she loves the modding stuff (or just puts up with it)

On a modding note, I have a question for the experts--I'm putting the case together now, and wondering if I could shorten this 3.5 foot SCSI cable--simply keep the terminator of course and remove some connectors. its a Tripp-Lite Ultra 320 LVD/SE flat ribbon style. Anyone??

in theory yes, just remember where all the wires go, and be very careful.

however if it has huge amounts of cores, then it could just be easier to buy a new one.

also, going against the flow here, I would take a week off for marriage stuff.... keeping the wife happy is important, and if you give her this week, then you can use that as ammo for spending more time on modding.

congrats.

I decided to do away with many of the mechanical switches and buttons on the mod and go for solid state with an IR remote control--because how cool is RC??-- :D I picked up a 12 Channel IR Relay Board (in kit form) and assembled it in about 2 hours. The nice thing about this board is that you can have an on/off configuration on the channels or momentary switching, or a combination of both. To test it out I hooked it up to the blast door module--works like a charm.

Here is the air intake vent for the HDD cooling fans. This scratchbuilt piece uses some styrene sheet, modder's mesh and two copper plumbing elbows. To get the subtle shading in the paint, first it was airbrushed, then hand detailed and finaly a soft shading with Doc O'Brien's weathering powders applied with a sable brush. This is pretty much how I painted the entire mod.

 WOW. Crim, that is just incredible. I don't care how long this has taken, just seeing a pic like that makes me happy. Keep up the amazing work, and finish it exactly how you want it. I know you do other cases for customers, so you have to work around a time line, but this is your baby, so work on it however you want. You have worked such unreal detail into this. Great job!

Man Crimson, you'd make a freaking fortune making cases like these and selling them, diehard Doom fans like me would pay for one of those

please say you will mod the remote. :)

hey thanks guys--yeah I'll have to maybe do it up in bloody red paint and make a Doom3 decal for the remote--any suggestions?

You can indeed spray paint the remote rusty red and green and those colors. And then maybe add a "holder" for the remote on the side of the mod? Or under it, where the rocks, and the Doom 3 logo is. So you have the remote allways with the PC, and you'll never lose it. Offcourse the holder is in Doom 3 style.

Oh wait another idea for the holder. Place it under the case, in the "rocky" base, and use a "spring" mechanism. So you click the remote in the base, and when you press on it (= the remote) again, it "slides" out, because of the spring :p.

Well.. see if you can and will do something with it :D

if you could make it look all beat up and damaged. Something that you might find in an industrial plant. maybe even totally redo the casing.

*holds in breath* HOLY F#*$IN $(@*!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this case... Nuff said... Can I have your children?

how about a glosish black remote with red dry brush?

also, not too many logos so that it does not look tacky

This is the best friggen case mod....EVER! I just can't wait for the finished product, the tensions killin me.

Hey Crimson, I've been watching this mod for a while now, and I just have to say that you have INSANE SKILLS! Anyway, I noticed that you use an insane amount of polystyrene in the Doom III mod. Where do you buy it from? If you get yours online can you tell me the website? I'm sorry if you already answered that question earlier in this thread but it's late and I don't feel like sifting through 94 pages to find it.

Whew!...alright it looks like its finally in the home stretch--Nothing more to build, just paint and assemble--easier said than done--although since the entire mod is built around modules, everything should fit right into place. Lots of wiring to do as well--but its 99% done overall. Here are some pics from last weeks build:

Etched pentagram window in its frame with LED lighting. Basically its 6 ultrabright red lamps wired in parallel:

Here is the roof module during painting. The cover caps off the roof nicely and includes 2x 120mm fan vents for the Black Ice pro radiator.

Roof Module 1

Roof Module 2

Here you can see that i curved the interior of the roof module to allow for airflow off the radiator:

Roof Module 3

The Antec case is really small for a mid-tower, so I built an extension for the rear of the case. This allows me to push the PC Power & Cooling 510 SLi PSU out the back about two inches, giving me preciuous room inside for wire managment and components. The round holes on the extension piece are for PSU fan exhaust, an 80mm fan and a hole for the water pump. This estension piece also conceals all the typical messy wires on the back of the PC :

Extension 1

There is even a hinged door for access to the I/O panel of the motherboard.

Extension 2

Once its all painted up and weathered, I'll take individual pics of all the components before assembly to show all the parts.

Awesome!

I really like how the pentagram came out :)

I was just wondering, if you could make a guess on how many hours you think you put into this project.

OMG OMG OMG OMG i want that window *drools* the cathod looking thing is wierd looking... is it LED's?

i want this thing to be done so i can make my doom3 addict cream his pants... lmao (and so i can gte a new background :D )

Crim... Jesus, man. This is the best case mod I have ever seen done. What an amazing piece of artwork you have created. I will be almost sad when it's over; this thread has been a freaking part of my life for so long. What will I do without the joys of checking for another update?

I have been following your project for months! I wish i could give you an award myself besides a big "Thank You!!!" for sharinf this part of your life with us. It's truly an amazing Modd and I wish I had the skill.

It would be a crime not to give you a 1st place award (cash please?) for your work. There are some kick ass Modds out there but this one IS a real all out Modd. Amazing!

On the conservative side I'd say about 1400 hrs so far :D

I'm sure a lot of us would pay cold hard cash for etched windows like that :D

Keep pushing, you're in the home stretch now, and we all seriously can't wait much longer.

(1400 hours? Doesn't surprise me at all, not with the quality you're creating)
