I've been a newegg person for years and years. But lately I feel like they make no effort to have the best prices and won't go above and beyond to have great customer service. I've spent over $20k there over this time period and they still won't make the smallest effort to make my experience special when things go funny. So I'm looking elsewhere.

I live in SoCal, so local is better (better shipping time). Give me your thoughts on the best online retailer.

Thanks.

newegg!

although I did order a 19" LCD 50+ days ago, and it is still not here.

Newegg has been having some quality control issues in my experience. The last 4 out of 5 parts I have ordered have been used/refurbished, when I was paying FULL RETAIL. My cpu had the IHS chipped on every corner, even prior to me installing it. Their prices arent even competitive anymore, but sometimes they are the only place that carries certain things. Shipping is the ONLY thing I can say is positive about newegg.

I have ordered about 20 parts from newegg in the past, and I dont plan on ordering from them again unless I absolutley have to.

In Cali, both have sales tax. Though in my experience, ZZF only has 1.725 while Newegg is at 1.825.

They're both reputable site, and I've had good experiences with both. I believe ZZF has more items with free shipping (2 day) than the egg.

Personally, it comes down to which has the best final price when I make purchases, and I have no qualms with splitting my purchases into microscopic pieces. :)

Being that I build many machines, I like to purchase everything from one great merchant. I do not do piece builds from all over the place. It makes figuring things out later for RMA's and such royal pain.

Thanks for the input so far.

If Zipzoomfly redesigned their site with better organization and with user reviews and such then they would totally destory newegg. No one can deny that they 9 times out of 10 have the best overall price if you calculate in shipping. ZipZoomFly has a less amount of selection but when I have the choice I always choose ZZF over NewEgg.

ZZF > NE

I don't like ZZF's layout. It's so much easier to find things using newegg.

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong though.

I shop from ZZF now. Mostly because they are only 1$ more than newegg on every product (Most of the time) and they include free Fedex 2 day, which when I order a bunch of stuff, it can get expensive. ZZFfor the win.

GO ZZF im having problems with Newegg as we speak on a RMA. I have Ordered there for 3 Years now and the Minute I need Customer Service help WOW There is NONE just a RUN Around GO ZZF all the way or Clubit or Anybody else........... :D Until they get some Customer Service Back Buy Elsewhere...........

I spent close to $1000 for my first ever ZZF experience, got two free games that weren't listed in the descriptions at a cheaper cost than newegg. I only goto newegg anymore to quickly look up the costs of things to get a base estimate of how much it's selling for. Newegg has also started to use 3 Day UPS! that was a complete deal breaker for me.

well newegg has been nothing but good to me. although I got shipped a stick of ram that was bad and a video card that had a piece fall off of it, they gave me rma #s for both and hopefully they get my rma's back quick. that being said, i don't think one company has more of a chance at faulty parts than another.

i say stick with the egg.

i just split an order between both, depending on which was cheaper, and also ordered the HD from ZZF for an extra $2 because Newegg sucks for hard drives. ZZF's site does suck though, no reviews and a useless search. newegg is much better for figuring out what to get

That and I've never been impressed with newegg's treatment of hard drives or their use of packing peanuts.

I often times find stuff at the very very bottom of the box with all the peanuts on top of it. What good are the peanuts if they aren't all around my bits of silicon?

I hear ZZF has superior packing tequniques.

I have had quite a few bad pieces of otherwise quality hardware come from newegg lately. I am really wondering if bad packing had alot to do with it. Dead processors, Dead Intel Brand Motherboards, Bad Hard Drives. Probaly 10% of the hardware I've been getting from there lately is defective in some way.

I'd recommend ZZF for several reasons.

1) Free 2nd day shipping on most items, where as Newegg usually has at least $3-6 on most parts. That adds up pretty quick on a build.
2) Better packing than Newegg, ESPECIALLY on hard drives, I will NEVER order a HD from 'egg again.
3) Better prices in most cases.

On my last complete system build, I priced it out between Newegg and ZZF since one had this part cheaper, the other had that part a little cheaper, but when the shopping carts were loaded full and shipping added from Newegg, using Newegg would have ended up costing $170 bucks and some change more than ZZF, thats a big difference on a $1,200 machine and needless to say I hit submit on ZZF :D Some people are sure to scream "but the customer service rox0rs". To that I say a fool and his money are soon parted :)

The only thing I've ordered from Newegg this year has been a cable modem, they did have it cheaper than anywhere else, but not many places even stocked it. But 2-3 years ago I was spending 90% of my cash for computer parts from them, they seem to have outgrown their britches, sadly enough they're not the same as they used to be.

Newegg is saving so much money by not even having a will call center. They don't nearly have the overhead of a walk in store, and they have a huge internet audience. Why can't they have good prices like they used to?

I can oftentimes find better deals at my local best buy or circuit city these days. I used to buy blindly at the egg all the time, sure that I was getting a good deal.

That and they used to get my shipping order out almost immediately. Now I figure if I order Monday morning, they'll ship by Tuesday afternoon, and I'll get it by Thursday afternoon. It used to get to me by Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.

I think I'm moving my money to ZZF, and the egg for stuff they don't stock.

Sorry to lose you good friend.

I use to think CHEAP was Good too Until This RMA , Man was I wrong, Never Again will I Buy a BAD EGG :D This RMA is a True Nightmare and its not getting anybetter yet.

This is what I do.

1) Go to New Egg and find the item I want to buy.

2) Check ZZF and see if they are selling it for a cheaper price

3) Buy from cheaper site**

I usually find that the New Egg and ZZF are split about 50/50 for the cheapest price. I have found that on several occasions ZZF didn't have the specific item I wanted from New Egg.

** Step 3 does not apply to hard drives. ZZF ships their OEM drives with much better packing than new egg. I alway buy drives from ZZF, even if New Egg is cheaper.

Whatever is cheapest.

True. I've had excellent experiences with both ZZF and Newegg, and would shop at either. Which one would depend on who had the item or who had it cheapest when I was ready to buy.

Man, you guys are making me nervous with all this talk about new egg's bad packaging of HD's. I have a 200gig waiting for me when I get off work that I ordered from them. I hope its alright!

I've never had a problem with newegg's packaging. They wrap OEM drives in bubble wrap, then put it in a box with packing peanuts.

This is correct. Have you ever had that inner box go to the bottom of the packing peanuts though? I have about 20% of the time I order drives from newegg.

And I don't know about you, but 2 layers of cardboard and a bit of bubble wrap isn't enough to protect a hard drive from the shock of shipping. Foam is the only way to go on that front. Hard bubble wrap has almost no give.

I can. The last five orders I made I priced at both sites, and NewEgg was cheaper, total, every time.

Indeed, the ZZF site isn't very easy to use; it looks quite 90's.

Well I feel better Now i just got a Call Finally from Newegg and they want to make it Right on my RMA it only took 2 weeks LOL they have seen the Light. Finally a person not an E-Mail to get ahold of them with this e amiling was getting old FAST. So maybe if things go Right I will buy there again but we shall see how this go's.

In my experience, ZZF always had much higher shipping costs than NewEgg (although NewEgg seems to be catching up lately). I've never used ZZF tech support but NewEgg's has always been painless for me.

newegg works well..but sometimes i want them to bend the rules for me. when they screw up i want them to pay for return shipping. or give me an advance rma. or something special. when its not my fault I hate paying to have them fix it. they don't even have the best prices, so they need to suck it up sometimes and help us out. Newegg just seems like they've grown so big they don't care about an individual anymore. They are turning into the next Fry's Electronics.

As others have said, ZZF for HDDs, regardless of the price difference. Everything else, whoever is cheaper.

I get alot of stuff from Direct Tiger Direct. I like their prices and no TAX woot!. i dont think they have a warehouse here in kali. So no sales tax, fast ship, nice price. Dunno about RMA stuff. Never had a problem with the Tiger.

Newegg has crasy ass sale tax. i brought like over 2.000 bucks of stuff from them 2 build a new rig. specs down by sig n the tax was like over 200 bucks pissed me off. thats not with shipping to. only buying stuff from them if no other store carrys it.

You must live in California :D Tax Kings, here in Nevada we don't have to pay newegg tax because they don't have a warehouse here, But Frys is Tax city here and most of the other BestBuy, CompUSA, PCClub any that have business running in that state you will pay taxs in most states.

I haven't.

And it's not like the shipping companies drop kick your boxes or anything. I'm not sure what you mean by foam, but if it's the same stuff they pack computer cases with, I'd say bubble wrap provides better protection. That type of foam barely gives at all.

I have used both, and new egg ships faster, the prices are close to each other.. I have RMA'd stuff from New Egg and not had a single problem. i have bought a lot of hard drives from New Egg and never had a problem. Always got a new part when thats what i ordered.

I've ordered many times from both. Lately, the stuff I've been wanting (flash memory, drives) were cheaper at ZZF at the time of purchase, and free shipping to boot. Both sellers seem to get the stuff to me at the same time, so I really just choose based on who has the lowest prices at the time.

As for the site, eh, I can browse ZZF well enough.

Well as of Right Now Newegg has 1 Great Tech person I only wish I had talked to him 2 weeks ago instead of the ones I talked too and e-mailed back and forth with. this guy truly tried to fix the Problem I was having with them and we got it worked out on Good terms. I have ordered from them for over 3 years now and this was the first time I had a Problem and no one seem to be in a hurry to fix it e-mail after e-mail and nothing until I finally got Pissed. but This guy made up for alot of bad Blood and helped me fix the problem and I even have a Direct # to get ahold of him in the future if I have any problems and a 50 Dollar discount on my next order I see more TOYS coming My Way Yea Baby. I say as of now just keep at them if a Problem comes up like I did and finally it got Fixed....... :D
Great Job Mark H from Newegg.......

I can't fault newegg for that. Newegg has a strict no-tech-support policy and I agree with them. If they worked on diagnosing everyone's problems they'd be in the poorhouse paying for all the support.
I think what they should do however is work it out with the companies to have the company diagnose the problem, and let the people then RMA it through newegg via an advance RMA. That would make for an awesome reseller. Really taking care of the customer in a way that wouldn't hurt their business.

I'd like to throw Multiwave into the arena for you guys to tear apart. ;)
http://www.mwave.com

Been buying from them for a few years every now and then and never had any issues. Had a DOA Viper 770 once and back then they send the new one the same day they received the busted one.

Well it was Not trying to Fix the RMA as Much as they have Backordered it 3 times now and no one would give me any options on how to resolve the problem, he did and now it is Fixed no more backorders they found me a MB. All the other techs passed the Buck......and said I would have to keep waiting on ETA's that were not happening ;) This guy looked into it and came up with a Plan and thats all I asked was for a Replacement of the MB . it only last 3 days and went POOF lost a Dimm Slot.
