I got both amd and intel systems but I am thinking up upgradeing my intel 478pin with a 2.4c and a ic7g mb with a 3.4c 478pin. Anyways any of you ever tried to oc a 3.4 yet ? Currently stable with my 2.4c with the ram I have I can get stable 3.2ghz I am thinking a 3.4 should hit over 4.0 ghz easy with a air zaleman cooler. Any input is appreciated.

Shane I've been asking the same question I woud like to upgrade as well but how far she overclocks is the deal.

I think 3.6 is tops for those northwood cpu's. Get a 3.2 prescott and overclock it to 4ghz. That's what I got after replacing my 2.4c that was running 3.2ghz.

you could likely overclock that 2.4c to over 3ghz (3.2 / 3.3) anyways with some cooling those 2.4C chips are intels dream over clockers.

2.4C's are good over clockers, mine is around 3.3.

I too have been thinking of upgrading. Are the prescott cores 478, so it would work in my IC7?

Yes I believe 3.4ghz P4 is the highest end prescott you can get for your socket 478. I could be wrong.

With my older computer (which was sold) had a 478pin 3.4GHz northwood chip, and the 24/7 stable OC was 3.93GHz, and under load only got 38c. I love those northwoods!

3.4C are the latest northwood produced and I am quite sure so is prescott. Well, I got a P4 3.4C with unlocked multipliers and the best I could acheive is 3.9X GHz and I was not stable at all. At 4GHz, my PC booted but would not load the WinXP boot screen. This was with my older P4C800-E which was rev. 1.02. Now, with a 2.00, it cannot stand 3.75GHz (where it was perfectly stable on 1.02) anymore since the motherboard droops like hell.

Running a 2.4C to 3.2 ish will most probably outperform a 3.4C since you are most likely running the FSB at 266MHz. I think that any 3.4C will not go as much as 3.8-3.9GHz with high end air cooling. Using water cooling or vapo will get you beyond this for sure and open the 4.0GHz range.

I don't think I would recommend buying a new 3.4 Proc on the S478 spec. If you were to buy a processor that fast, you should go ahead and invest in a Socket 775 mobo. Just my opinion.

I decided to get better ram and now the 2.4c is at 3.6 with a 1:1 ratio; heck its almost as good as my amd x2 setup

Nice!!!

I was pondering getting some Gskill DDR600 for mine to run at 1:1.

Then I decided to get some OCZ 2x1Gb (on the way!)
instead for a little more $ than the Gskill DDR600 2x512Mb.

In the past I used to run at 3:2 at 300FSB with my Corsair XMS3200.
(with everything on Auto) at 2-2-2-6-1T for 3.6Ghz = great benchmarks

And the current (crappy) HyperX 3200 2x512 I have in there will only do 3:2 at 284FSB (with Command per clock disable) at 2.5-3-3-8-1T
