onboard LAN mod

I would like to move the LED for network traffic, which is on the back of my motherboard, to the front of my case.

I have a "block" with 2 USB and 1 LAN port that is soldered onto the board. There appear to be 22 pins coming from it, as well as 6 pins that secure it in place. Unfortunately, i don't know which pins are connected to the traffic LED.

Has anyone done this mod? Is there any way to identify the pins? Perhaps a schematic diagram of the board?

Thanks for any replies.

Yeah it can be done. But if you don't know how to work out what pins the LED is yourself then i'm guessing you really don't have enough experience with electroics to try and do this. So my advice is don't, as you'll probably ruin your motherboard.

If you really want to do it buy a cheap PCI network card and use that. Normally they have big LEDs that have very obvious connections. And that way you'd only break a cheap card if something went wrong.

Well I have done it.

The stainless steel "box" containing 2 usb and 1 lan port was made by "S-Tech".

I pressed in 2 tabs near the top corner of each side. Then I prised open the top with a knife.
Right at the top, there are 2 sets of 2 solder points. These are clearly connected to the 2 LED's that show connectivity and traffic. I just soldered 2 pieces of wire onto the ends of those terminals and then put an LED on the front of the case attached to the wires.

My motherboard (asus a8v) was not damaged performing this mod and the extra current caused by the 2nd LED did not appear to cause harm.

I hope this information is useful to someone. :)

Pictures are included.

I have done this mod on a DFI LanParty Ultra D, and an ASUS A8V Deluxe. Both successful.

Aha i have never posted pictures before. I hope it works

Note the + and - thats how the leds were orientated for me; may not be the same for all motherboards. :) Aha smileys, cool!
