What makes you get more than one lappy?

Question goes as in the topic.

I ask because i just got a Dell Inspiron 9100 last september. Very happy with it except that it ALWAYS sounds like a jet taking off. ^_^ I love it's humongous size and right now it rocks my desktop, the only thing it needs is a monitor for when it's in it's nice little nook.

Anyway, the reason I ask is because I do lug it around all the time, and I was recently looking at the dell small business site and have started to become enamored with the x1 or whatever that really really small lappy is (it's 2.1lbs or somesuch). I think it's the perfect compliment to my beastly lappy.

So I again ask, what make you guys get another lappy, especially those guys that get moar than one in the span of 2 yrs or so?

Better batteries, better specs for work, slightly more gaming capability, size.

My recent jump was from a Compaq Presario 2805US to my Asus M6Ne for project work and a battery life of 4.5 hours, as well as a Radeon 9700 Mobile. Oh right, and a much better screen resolution (xga to sxga+) :)

Next year, I might jump to an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad X tablet if they're good.

I have a personal laptop, a Toshiba Tecra M2 and a work laptop, a HP NX9030.

Personally, I'd much rather use one laptop because syncing data sucks. The Toshiba is much lighter/smaller with the same size screen.. But since I'm not at the office much I primarily use the HP. Merely because of the amount of work docs I need to have on it.

Having two laptops isn't bad I guess... Any more than that is just a waste, unless you like kludge or whatever. If I were you, I'd definetely look into getting a 2nd laptop that's lighter and more portable.

If there's anything I hate, it's desktop replacement laptops. (I wouldn't want to replace my desktop. ;)) If you travel alot or need to move around often and need to carry a laptop, having a monstrous beast that weighs more than 8lbs is definetly not the way to go.

well, since BillLeeLee mentioned it, i think the IBM x40 tablet is going to be pretty nice. I just think the price is might be high. *shrug*

I got a lighter laptop partially to replace my aging i8200, but mostly because I'm tired of lugging this beast around all day every day. My X1 supposedly comes tomorrow, so I can probably provice answers/pictures if you have any requests.

Having a wife sitting beside you in the living room wanting to play freecell while you surf the [H] forums will make you get a second lappy. :p

It would be super-nice if you could give us some pictures and impressions after you get your lappy, Darth Bagel! (especially since the x1 is the one i'd like to get!)

I have my personal laptop and my work laptop. On top of that I use a 3rd laptop at work that is dedicated for testing/seting up everything on the network.

Winning the lottery might make me get a 2nd laptop. Otherwise, I'm sticking with my Latitude D610...

When one starts to "feel slow", then it is demoted to lesser roles and I get a bright, shiny new one. For example, my XPS2 replaces my Compaq nc4010 1.8GHz P-M (and a P-4 desktop as well) for gaming (discovered how crappy the 4010 was for that). The 4010 replaced a 1GHz HP Pavillion (really kind of cruddy for everything). The Pavillion displaced an old Toshiba Satellite 400MHz Celeron, and so on and so forth.

Basically, the same thing drives my lappy purchases as does my desktop upgrades - when it doesn't do something I want it to do adequately, then it's time to move onwards and upwards. :)

Meanwhile, I never seem to get rid of the old one, so it usually finds itself doing more menial tasks - print servers, DNS/DHCP servers, basic word processing/e-mail, etc. I'd like to say that this explains why I still keep my old Powerbook Duo 250 and 270c around, but at some point it becomes pure bloody-mindedness... :p
