Unofficial 2405FPW Thread (Now that its been announced)

Wish Dell would just run stricter quality control on these things, and sell the ones with backlight issues etc as imperfects or whatever, the people that don't mind so much can get one for cheaper and the rest of us don't have to worry that we might get a dodgy one and have to RMA it a time or two.

What can I say? I decided to love Dell. Here's the reason. Yup, I'm a Dell ho now. :D
I ordered 2 days before 4th of July weekend and it arrived right befere the weekend. Initially, I was really stunned by the size and pictures. However, I discovered one red stuck pixel in the middle of the screen(that was kinda letdown) so yesterday(right after the long weekend), I e-mailed RMA department asking for replacement. I got confirmation e-mail late afternoon yesterday. I received the replacement today. They sent me via F-edex Overnight. That's just one week from the day I first ordered till a replacement arrived including a long weekend. Can ya beat that!!!
This one has no dead pixel and almost no backlight leakage. Maybe very very little at one corner. It's hard to say even in complete darkenss and 100 brightness setting. You have to stare at the screen for some time in a completely dark room. Still not sure. It's more like "There is no spoon" kinda thing to me. In other words, it doesn't bother me at all.
All I have to now do is call DHL and arrange a pick-up soon. Replacement package contained pre-paid return shipping label. Pretty nice, huh?
This was my first Dell purchase and I think they 'quaranteed' my satisfaction. I am impressed.
Until they screw me in the ass and don't even have a common courtesy to give me a reach around, I think I'll like dell from now on despite some horror stories I've heard here and there. :)

Now, I'm gonna go sleep with my 2405. Good night. Not to you guys, to my 2405 :D

P. S. I also had some heavy headache when I first got it. It turned out the excessive bightness. I turned it down quite a lot and also adjusted some colors(RGB) as recommended by other users in another thread. Now there's no such problem. Well, new one. Insomnia...

What email address did you use for the RMA? I have a stuck pixel and I am considering RMAing it if they will overnight it to me like that lol.

Have you tried playing HL2 or CS:S? I want to know if poeple are seeing the ghosting that I am seeing.

Also, what did you tell the returns department? That you had a stuck pixel and wanted a new one?

I think I found a link to the page in a 2005FPW after a few search. I can't recall the search word. Damn, it was only 2 days ago. Do some search with words like 'replace', 'exchange' or even 'overnight'... You'll find it. It's page that you enter your personal info, order number, customer number, and description for exchange. In the description, make sure sound professional or even official. Give them impression that you have other things to do. I said something like the pixel problem is somehow linked to my productivity at work. That it's causing me some confusion.

I played HL2, CS and some other games and see no ghosting at all. At least to me.

Hope you will have the same experience as mine. It was so nice I almost wanna do it again. :D

I just finished setting mine up a few minutes ago and the monitor is Huge campared to my "old" 22" CRT...so far no Ghosting watching SWG Attack of the Clones,FFXI,BF2,L2 and FS2004.

i can't believe how popular these screens are. every hardware forum is screaming about them all the time  ;)

i'm holding out for this LCD technology to mature another 1+ year until i bother. my sony G200 is perfect

Hi all,

I finally decided to order this monitor :) but I don't live in USA and I don't want to RMA the monitor for any reason because it will be a real pain in the as*.

What will be the best place to buy from? directly from Dell? Is it possible to find a store that checks the backlight bleeding and deal pixels? (I won't be able to check it except when it reaches my country and by then, I won't be able to RMA it)

My uncle lives in NY and runs a small business so he can get it for me and bring it with him. I just need your help telling me the best price I can get and the best place to shop from :)

By the way, this monitor will be combined with a high end gaming rig with dual 7800 GTX cards in SLI.

Your help is much appreciated :)

I am in awe.

Thanks or help:)

So there is no way Dell would check for Dead pixels or Backlight bleeding issues?

I spoke with compudirect, they have it for 897 (27$ shipping) = $929.50 total. They charge 5$ fee or checking dead pixel and Backlight issues. Their price as you see is more than Dell's price and I am not sure about their return policy.

I guess I will go with Dell and pray that I will get a perfect unit .

they check but they dont check the way a consumer would, carefully. We turn down all the lights and set brightness to 100 , i dont think they do that.

They also should check for any buzzing noise. This seems to be somewhat common with this model. I received one yesterday that emits a high pitched buzz after being on for about 30 minutes. Have two other 2405's here to compare with that don't make that noise.

Well I have now two options:

1- Buy directly from DELL, cost will be $974.56 (899$ + 74$ TAX for NY).

2- Buy from Compudirect, cost will be $929.50 (Here I am not sure if I have to pay taxes or not).

Overall compudirect price is better because of the NewYork tax at Dell :( I can also call compudirect and ask them to pretest the unit which is a plus.

There is extra money that can be paid for warranty.. I am not sure here if I didn't buy this warranty I will have Warranty from Dell or not. I will have to ask them about it.

Based on the above, what I should choose?

Thanks

Thanks for tellin me about this issue, I will definitely ask Compudirect (If I decided on them) to test noise levels.

I got my monitor Today, Its almost perfect except a red stuck pixel right in the center of the screen.. I guess I'll call dell for a return on Monday.... :(

Hey, man. Congrats. Didn't you order around the time I did also? You exactly have same problem as I did. A stuck red pixel in the middle of the screen. I got the replacement on the day before yesterday and it's perfect. I used Dell Return page and the response was immediate. I got the replacement right next day via Fedex Overnight. Thought you might wanna consder that route for your problem.
BTW, pretty nice display, huh? I was thrilled. Well still am. Hope you will enjoy as much as I do.

Ouch , Toms hardware wasnt to pleased with the 2405FPW as a gaming monitor:

"Video noise while watching DVDs is strongly evident. This is a shame, because the format of the screen would be perfect for this application. Forget it, though - there is definitely too much video noise and, in addition, viewing angles aren't suitable. Games are clearly not this monitor's strength, either; it's too slow, and the monitor displays annoying lags. Worst of all, moving images lose sharpness in their textures."

Im so confused on wich LCD to get now, I currently have a 2001FP wich looks great and has minimal motion blur.. but its mediocre black levels pretty much kill it as a gaming monitor. especially when looking at my 21" Sony CRT sittin next to it.

Maybe its best I just return the 2001FP and stick with CRT ..For now at least.

Im still curious how the Samsung 204T performs but cant find a single review on it.

Haven't noticed anything like that...maybe they were using a composite cable and with a 480i source? At 1920x1200 it's gonna look bad if you have a low grade source & connection.

I'm surprised so many CAD designers post on here. After all the monitor is ONLY GOOD FOR CAD DESIGNERS according to our devout saviour tomshardware.com

I don't know who paid Tom's Hardware to criticize the Dell Widescreen LCD like that (most probably Apple), but their article is full of crap. I regularly play UT2k4 (almost every day) and I have never noticed any of the problems they have mentioned. Maybe they have a defective flatpanel or are too stupid to set it up properly, but where I'm sitting, nothing comes close to the 2405FPW. :)

I agree.... UT2004 is awesome on the 2405FPW :D

After reading the last few posts I fired up UT04 and it runs awesome at 1920 x 1200. Now BF2 needs to join the rest of us in 2005 with widescreen support.

In case there are any Canadians looking for a deal on one of these puppies (and don't want to get scammed by some idiot from Florida), Dell now has a 20% off sale on all of their widescreen LCDs. That brings the 2405FPW from $1399 down to $1,119.20 (that's almost $300 less!). It's definitely making my mouth water. Trying to resist the urge...

^ I just placed my order for one yesterday! Never thought Dell Canada would put out a 20% off the 2405! :p

I heard this monitor supports 1280x1024 with black bars on the side? Is this a native 1280x1024 mode in which things aren't squeezed together? Thanks.

I too would like to know where this magical replacement page is, Iv'e already spent almost 6 hours of my day playing ping pong with dell tech support trying to get my 2005fpw with horrendous backlight leakage (in all 4 corners) replaced.

Sorry for the bitterness but I never knew it took so much effort to have a 750 dollar defective piece of hardware replaced, like I grow dollars in my backyard or something.

Actually I take that back, you should try getting replacements outta Sony.

full of shit tbh, there is slight loss of quality, but when i switch from pc to XBMC and upscal dvds to 1080i its looks class:)

I'm just wondering does the 2405FPW includes a DVI cable?

What is the "best" wall mount for this system? I was thinking of buying one that will last me into the future. Should I decide to go with a bigger LCD in the future, I am hoping it can accomodate it. Thanks.
