Exchange WinXP 32 bit for WinXP 64 bit for cost of shipping

I think it's on a different site, but Microsoft has opened its trade-in program to retail copies AFAIK.

I sent them another email yesterday, here's the reply.
Thank you for your email.

The Technology Advancement Software Kits will begin shipping at the end of June.

Your order will remain in "Pending" status and your Credit Card will not be charged until your order ships complete from our Fulfillment Center.

Sincerely,

Microsoft Technology Advancement Program

My previous question still stands. Your reply cited late May 2005, and it's already the end of the first week in June. Can you give any more specific dates? I've been patient so far, but the original website didn't mention "pre ordering" anywhere- asking us, your consumers, to wait two months for our products to ship is unreasonable. According to your FAQ page:

Q: When will I receive my Technology Advancement Software after ordering?

A: Due to large demand, it will take about 4-6 weeks after ordering to receive your shipment.

It's been more than six weeks, and my order is still pending.

BS they have billons but will not kick down with the software as they said they would
We should sue

Sue for what? the $12 they haven't even charged yet?

First of all, they never promised a specific ship date, ever. Only an approximation which cannot be used as a definite answer.

Thanks. I'll look into it and post a link when I find it.

It was a joke but you may not have figured that out  i was also told 4-6 weeks and then 2 weeks when i called on may 21. The people that they transfer me to are from india and i guess that is where all of this is being handled ( no suprise ) and my friend at microsoft keeps telling me i will not see it until mid july early august. I Wish he wasnt such an ass so he could just give me a copy

DISCLAIMER: Not intended to spark a heated debate, just for the sake of argument.

Actually, that's an interesting question with an interesting answer. In the global economy, do you realize that the computer industry is the only sector of the economy held to such loose standards? Compare the Microsoft/GM analogy, and then add to it.

"By installing any add-ons, applications, or plug-ins, you void the warranty on your (insert OEM here: Dell, Gateway, etc). We cannot regulate the quality of other companies' programming."
Translation:
"By putting a baby seat in your Chevy, you void your factory warranty. The same holds true for any decals, bumper stickers, FOP/PBA badges, etc; we can't guarantee the quality of the mountings. Besides, we didn't design your car to carry all that extra weight around all the time. While we're at it, make sure your trunk is always emptied overnight- think how much strain you're putting on the suspension by keeping the springs compressed 24/7."

"You are not buying a copy of Windows XP, you are purchasing the right to use it," OR "You are renting/leasing a license to use this product, at Microsoft's discretion."
Translation:
"You don't own this product, we can cancel your contract in three years and FORCE you to buy Longhorn, or any piece of garbage we see fit."

The FAQ openly says 4-6 weeks "due to volume," and the RELEASE date has been pushed back 4 weeks already. This isn't due to volume, it is due to Microsoft's not being ready to ship yet. Microsoft did NOT say this was a pre-order anywhere, they made it sound like it was ready to ship and would be in our hands shortly.
Claim 1) False advertising, misrepresentation of facts. Item was pre-ordered, contrary to what Microsoft publicized.
Claim 2) Breach of contract. They sent out emails claim the end of May, and they originally said 4-6 weeks.

You're right that they haven't charged your $12 yet, but they do have your information, and your permission to bill you at any random moment. Also, they HAVE already taken your $12 for all intents and purposes. You don't know when they're going to bill/ship, and I haven't seen an option to cancel your order. Therefore, you can't touch those $12 in your bank account, or else you run the risk of going into overdraft/negative balance. Microsoft may not have the money yet, but then neither do you. If anything, I am MORE inconvenienced by the delay than I would have been if they'd just cancelled it, because now I have to remember that I have to keep a minimum $12 balance on my Check Card.

Microsoft does this much too often. They need to be held accountable for their actions, including their promises and announcement dates.

If you are so poor that you cannot even keep $12 in your account, you shouldn't be wasting money on this in the first place.

Sorry, this annoys me to no end.

It's "INTENTS AND PURPURSES". ok, I'm done.
I had a highschool tech teacher who used that phrase tons of times a day, and he always said intensive. It was a shocker when I found out that it really was something different

I thought it was "entangled porpoises".

Anyways, I went to the page and it's giving me an error. Do I need to do this from my AMD 64, or is the page just busted?

I'm sure I have no idea what you're talking about! :p I'm just kidding, I edited my post to reflect this newfound knowledge. Sorry about that, I'll remember it in the future.

Back on topic: glad I have some support on this, thanks Waffles!

you know they updated their Win64 tryout page -

I am using Win64 Build 1830 - the "retail" edition 180 day trial. I know its not in a shiny case, but it does work and it is very fast. It is much better than the 1433 build I had a few months back (Feb).

Go on the MS Windows x64 Professional page, order it and download it.

And if you are anything like me, my Windows never stays installed for 6 months, so I dont mind formatting and reinstalling it with "my" version when it finally gets here.

Try it - also, if you have a NF3 or 4 board, do a google search for nforce 6.56 (i think its on guru3d.com) - it will save you a lot of hassle bc that version is only available to Austrailia and some other countries. If you dl it from nvidia.com, then you get 6.39 which had issues with my gigabit lan and the firewall - trust me, its worth it.

Good luck

I went from pending to this today "Order Status: Order has been received. You will be charged at the time of order shipment"

Nuts... I added a hard drive last night and Windows XP says that I need to re-activate. Which it won't let me as my serial number is now invalid as I gave it up to get Windows XP 64 back in April and still haven't received the CD or key for.

I have 3 more days to use my PC before I need to wait the eternity for the 64 upgrade disk to arrive.

I'll be in the same situation 11 days from now

Still not shipped for anyone as far as I can see.
Nothing has gone out yet.

oh my bad, i was being an idiot, i read those as they got a tracking number...

that's what i get for staying up til 5 in the morning heh

the PID number has to be off a OEM copy of windows, or from the sticker attatched to your PC.

My current order status is...,

Order has been received. You will be charged at the time of order shipment

One would think that they wouldn't deactivate the one until they'd ship the other. Of course, this IS Microsoft we're talking about, so probably anything's possible.

Depends on what you're referring to by "this". If, by "this", you mean "people still ordering x64 Win XP using OEM Product ID's for WinXP Pro", then yeah, it is. In fact, I ordered today. If, perhaps, you mean "orders still effectively in Pending status", then the answer is also yeah.

If, however, by "this" you mean "Microsoft shipping x64 to people who ordered from the page linked on the first page of this thread", then not yet.

I cancelled my order

Texas A&M University (where I go to school) has an XP 32 and 64 bit license (two seperate discs with 2 seperate codes) for 10 bucks free ship - for students only.

Posting this b/c: if you are a student taking summer school at a university - check with them, they might have licenses!

So if I was to do this with a retail XP Pro/home whatever I have laying in my Dads office would this work? Or is it just OEM ones that are getting their orders completed?

Microsoft has tight rescritions on every program at my university. To general students you can buy cheap ms software, but can only use it while attending the university. For cse majors you can use the msdnaa program where you borrow the cd's, download the product, or buy a personal copy for production cost. The hitch is you have to obtain a activation key from the university everytime you install the thing.

So no luck for me =/

Microsoft's requirements follow

"In order to be eligible to receive Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, your computer must have been ordered or built between March 31, 2003 and July 31, 2005 and must contian an x64 processor. You must also have a Retail (Full Packaged Product), System Builder, or OEM version of Microsoft Windows® XP Pro (32-bit) to exchange."

Just try it, I really doubt ms is going to check up on everything and if they did the worst that could happen is getting a robotic rejection email.

So you're not actually sending your disc and such back? What do you do I am confused call and give them your cd key?

No on the first page of this thread the first link leads to a form that you fill in your shipping info and your 32bit xp key from ethier the auth label or a number from sys properties. After you send that in you'll be pending like the rest of us.
