transporting an LCD

alright now that i took the plunge into the wonderful world of LCD monitors, i need to know the best way to transport them.

after i graduate in 2 weeks, im going to be moving. space is a big issue (one of the reasons i switched from CRT to LCD before the move), so i dont really want to have to move it in the dell box/styrofoam that it came in. it's pretty huge and would take up more room than my CRT would.

how do you people transport your LCDs? is there some sort of LCD carrying case thats on the market somewhere? should i just wrap the screen in towels and put it in a smaller box?

with my CRT, id just put it screen-down in my backseat, but no way id do that with my new monitor.

and just as a side note, i have the 2005FPW, so it's 16:9 and not standard aspect. ive seen the one case on thinkgeek, but i dont think a widescreen would fit in it.

just got my 2005fpw and was thinking about the same thing.

we need something about 19" or wider on the inside edge. I was really looking at trying to find a gun case, aluminum if possible, to carry it in. The best chance is the 4 pistol ones, but everything i've found, at least the remotely economical ones, are only 17" wide. I've found one or two 20" cases, but for over $100. the design would work perfect for the display. stand isn't nearly as important.

with a little searching i've found a few sites that make foam padded cases, but they are either too expensive, or want you to make a "request for quote" just to get a price.

I should be going to academy and a few other gun related stores soon. if i find a good deal, i'll be sure to follow up.

actually, the 2005fpw is 16:10 ;)

I just moved out of my dorm a week ago... what I've been doing with my 2001fp is wrapping it with all my blankets and putting it in the suitcase. My monitor is more important than my clothes. =)

haha i know what you mean. this thing is worth more than my life. i think im just going to take the styrofoam that it came in, and wrap it with duct tape. either that or buy some bubblewrap from staples.

I have a Geargrip 17-19" LCD lan caryer for my LG, but I'm at a loss as to what I'll be doing for my 2405... probibly use the box and packing that it came with... kinda anoying, but probibly the safest mode of transporting the beast....

Untill Geargrip comes out with something for the widescreen monsters...

I like the idea of an aluminum gun case though... I'll have to look into that one myself...

I use the GearGrip 20" LCD Shield harness for my 2005FPW, looks good and works like a charm. Fits in all overheard compartments on airplanes as well unless you're flying those small RJ85/100 jets

But I dont know if it will fit the 2405FPW and I just got two of those ...

There's no use in buying a case for it if you're only moving to a new place. Just cut up the Dell box and make a sort of folding portfolio that can go over the back and front of the monitor. All you really need is something to keep stuff out of the back of the thing and off of the screen.

Just buckle down and use the dell box. Obviously its one of the safest things to move it in because...well, it was SHIPPED IN IT.

The largest geargrip works ok for the 2405...it covers the whole screen, but the frame pkes out a little.

I have a plastic bag that fits my 2005FPW perfectly in portriat mode; I slip that on, then take one of my hoodies and slide that on top (just as if the screen was wearing it). Tuck in the hood and tie the arms in front and you have a decent amount of padding and protection. I've taken it to several LANs this way.

But then again, maybe I'm just a little lax as to how I care for mine.

like i said in 2 previous posts, the dell box is way too big. i drive a saturn and my computer takes up my whole back seat, which is now unacceptable since i have an LCD.

or you can mail it to yourself in its box...or make two trips...or have a freind help u move....the possibilities are endless.

how about utilizing the foam from the box to create something....

i think im just going to duct tape the styrofoam. either that or get some bubble wrap from staples and duct tape that around it.

moving to cali...thats ur first mistake lol.....jk-never been there.

the foam idea should work. if i recall, there are three pieces in that box. two for the monitor, and the other helps with the stand. use the 2 and ur set.

hmm, im looking at the gear grip now. looks like exactly what i'd want, but im not sure if the 2005FPW would fit. you said that you have a 2005FPW. which size did you get? (S, M, L?) i'm not really sure which one the 20" is. im looking at this page:

http://www.geargrip.com/details_gglcd.php?UID=1101930981429741cdd4ccb
Take a look at the dell website for the dimensions of the monitor and compare it with their size chart on that page ...

i know how big my monitor is.

i was saying that the width falls into the M catatory and the height falls into the S catagory. i wasnt sure if there would be too much vertically to hold it secure.

I got the L size ... it fits the 2005FPW perfectly. It was overpriced in UK ( Welcome to rip-off Britain ) but the monitor is worth a whole lot more :)

Just detach the monitor from it's base and wrap the monitor with bubble wrap. Transport it LCD side UP and make sure it doesn't have anything putting ANY pressure on the screen side and make sure it won't move around the car..

Oh and keep magnets (speakers) away from it as much as possible. That's it.

I say just cradle it in your lap if you're not driving or buckle it up in the passenger seat next to you, as long as you don't get in an accident you should be good to go. What's more important, the safety of your monitor or your comfort for a couple of a hours? :p

its settled: the monitor gets the passenger seat and ill make the woman sit in the backseat. best idea yet!

I put the monitor in the back seat, screen facing the seat, then belt it in :) Never had a problem yet, but it's also never ridden more than 30 miles one way.

Man, you're paranoid. It's not freakin' crystallized dynamite. LCD monitors are a lot less fragile than CRT monitors because there's no grille on the screen to get shaken up. All you have to worry about is things poking the screen and that's easily solved with some cardboard over it. I really don't understand your reasoning. What's the problem with putting it in the Dell box in the moving truck? That's basically how it got to your house in the first place.
