my friend wants to know

Those PSU's are not known for their quality. They are pretty, well packaged and even their cables are pretty sweet.

However when it comes to actual voltages they aren't that much better than a Comp USA brand PSU and actually rank below the "Mad Dog" line of Power supplies sold at Comp USA in terms of quality and reliability. That's not exactly an endorsement either.

When it comes to PSU's you can trust only a few companies.

Antec
Enermax
PC Power and Cooling
The OCZ's get some mixed reviews, but generally have a good rep.

Theres a few more brands, but I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

if ur friend really wants a good looking psu , get a superflower, the ones with the modular and sleeved cables and nice colors :)

Tell your friend to buy quality over looks when it comes to PC parts.

I.E Dont get an Ultra cause they suck ass, get a NeoPower or something.

The MadDog, at least the modular, is a rebranded SuperFlower PSU. Which is a good PSU.

Using search will give you a lot of results.

If your friend wants bling + modular, then get the OCZ Modstream. 450W model preferred.

That's good. I was wondering who made those. I've done a number of installations with them in customer PC's and they seemed pretty good.

Spectre & Sir Fragalot are right. And _Korruption_ is right on both counts. OCZ probably makes the best modular PSU's available today.

As far as the Ultra X-Connect 500 goes, I have 2 of them. Unlike many of the people who post negative replies here on this subject (such as "They Suck Ass")
I actually have had a very positive experience with them and so has Kyle Bennett (you know, the Founder of [H]ardOCP):p

As I have stated before, they aren't the best or the worst. They have the bling and great cables (although the 20 pin mobo cable is thick and stiff) And in my experience, did what they were supposed to do well. I'm not saying run out and buy one either.

People have had problems with the Ultra X-Connects (apparently including incomudro) and I certainly can relate to that having had an Antec take out a Dual Slot 1 PIII system I had a few years ago.

Sir-Fragalot gave you a solid list of respected manufacturers to look at. I might add Seasonic and Fortron Source but the recomendations he made were solid choices.

I currently use a modded PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 510 Deluxe in my system.

I've got two of them as well and have had no problems, and I also worked for a reseller that had little to no issues with them over-all.

The only "known issues" I can list are:

1. If your CPU's voltage is regulated off of the 5V rail, the 12V tends to run really high. So if you're friend has an A64 or P4, he's cool.

2. The cables are stiff. In small cases they're a bear to work with. If you have anything smaller than a Lian-Li PC50, forget it. ;)

3. Some drives don't like the power connectors. The SATA power connector falls right off of Samsung SATA drives and you can't even get the power connector onto an AOpen DVD/CDRW combo drive. Some boards have clearance issues with the 2x2 connector as well. Solution is easy, though. The cables are actually "normal" with some aesthetic covers over them. I've cracked the covers off and put some UV reactive heatshrink available through Performance-PC's over the ends and all is good.

4. Not the quietest power supply. There's no manual control of the fans and when they spin up to full RPM (which I think is a lot sooner than it needs to be,) they're a little on the noisy side.
