i've always wanted one of them headphone amps.. don't have the skill to make em thou
you can get one on eBay for about $30 US.

also, this thread ISN'T about the legality of using a mod chip in an Xbox. this if for Altoids tin hacks!

anyone try putting a mod chip in an altoids tin, yet? :D
hahaha sorry, had to. cool mods, either way!

Not really a mod, but I use an Altoids Tiny Tin to keep aspirin and Tylenol and such in to carry around with me. All the paint got worn off long ago from jangling around with my keys for the past few years, so it's now just got shiny metal showing.

I tend to use empty tine to hold case screws and jumpers that seem to accumulate after I take a computer apart.

Now I;m gonna have to sit and figure out something creative in honor of skudmonkey's usb hub.

hmm... somewhere I a have portable firewire hub...

Heres my USB to XBOX adapter.

I like it!

I have made a Adapter for SNES pads to serial port.
This altoids box looks like a great case for it....

Waht are the dimensions of the altoids?
Did a serial port fit to it?

Thanks

That's pretty darned cool.

The next altoid modding I'm going to do is this: Steal my friends round mac mouse, and stick it inside an altoids sours tin. Instant (almost) altoid mouse!

it seems perfect... :D

lol thats awesome, my friend just got the same color zen micro. Is there no negative feedback or whatever you call it from that tin?

No, no feedback or static problems or anything at all. All it does is protect and look cool. And it's a GREAT ice breaker for parties.

I kinda want to make a CMoy in one of those new gum-stick-sized altoids tins now. THAT would be slick. Speaking of which, would an iPod shuffle fit inside one of those small altoids tins? I've never actually seen an iPod shuffle in person (tells you how often I go to BB or CC), so I'm unsure on the size. Must...resist...urge...to...mod...

Teancum, don't resist the urge to mod, it's dangerous for your health.

I'm thinking I could build a stereo or radio or something like it in a altoids tin, you know with speakers and a headphone output and stuff? I'll have to look for a tiny radio or something to do it with.

The gum-stick-sized altoids tins are VERY small. It'd be difficult to do, i'd say you'd have to use a PCB, not perf board to get it to fit... I'm not sure how small the micro cmoy layout is, though. I think you could probably do it if you use nothing and soldered the components together :) but then again, the jacks would be substantial in size compared to it.

My CMoy, in a round tin

Tight fit, but she'll do just fine.

Wow, diredesire. That's nice! Man, I gotta go home and start working on more stuff!

Do you think a 9V would fit in the gumstick Altoids tin?

ok I have a brilliant idea...im going to dissasemble my cheapass cell phone and put it in a altoids case so if it ever goes off in school ill be like "all i got is a pack of altoids"

Yeah i thought about that. My phone is small enough to fit in an altoids tin (if i remove the antenna), but I would have to take the phone out to answer it. :D

I did a quick little eyeball measurement in a store and it looks like it would fit a 9v very snugly. The main problem you're going to have is the jacks and switches not being able to fit. If you use tiny button-type switches and the smallest jacks you can find i think it would be doable. You gotta have nice hands, and a PCB style board.

There are a ton of cool cmoys you can make, check these out

There's one link i'm tryin' to find that is the smallest PCB style CMoy i've ever seen. I'm pretty confident it could be crammed into a gum tin...

Edit: some pics/links to add

Might fit ;D

TINY one, on a perf board, no less!

If you got the skills :D

This is an ebay seller of amps. He makes his own PCBs, or at least gets someone to etch them for him. He has done it, it looks like... there's a lot more space than i remember estimating... maybe he is using a smaller battery?

Wow, some of those are nice. Although most of the small amps there didn't have input/output lines included, or the jacks. From the pics on www.evilfire.com, it looks like an iPod shuffle might just barely fit into the gumstick altoids tins. And with a little planning, I think putting a perfboard (not even an etched one!) CMoy with a 9V shouldn't be too hard.

its actually illegal for you to mod any of your videogame systems and any FCC regulated device. however so many people do it, that the law barely cracks down on it, the only time it does, for example, was the guy making female nude skins for DOA3 and then others downloaded those skins from him.
yeah, it was more the fact that he distributed those skins to other people that got him in trouble, if he had a modded xbox and only used it for personal use, no one would have even known...... it was more a violation of the EULA for DOA3 that got his ass in the first place..... IMHO

a 9V battery will fit in an altoids gum tin, with 1 1/4" space let over, assuming you center the batter in the tin. the rounded corners take some space away that way, but if you move the battery up a bit to sit flat against the side, there is about 1/4" in below and 1/4"to one side of the battery and about an inch above the terminals.

no room left for something to lay on top or be below the battery, unless you flatten the bottom of the tin, which i assume would be standard practice for any projects housed in one.

it's a tight fit but there are possibilities.

I think the tiny perf board one would be replicatable if you are very familiar with the schematic and are really creative. It'd be lead bending though... I might try it myself :)

Unfortunately some of the "mods" I've seen in Altoid boxes would be quite illegal to post.
Yea, its not the mints that are curiously strong........
