For sheer performance, I like the 3D engine in Gelato 1.1, which is a GPU-accelerated renderer from NVIDIA. You need to know Python and/or C++ to work effectively with Gelato, however. Regardless, this is slick stuff that originally came from Exluna, who had a nasty battle with Pixar a few years ago. NVIDIA has this code now and they have optimized it for Quadro FX hardware. If you have Quadro hardware, Gelato really helps render Maya (my main 3D tool) models faster, around a 30% improvement in most situations, although the impact isn't quite as dramatic with liquid content, but everything else including light-particle and the new displacement content renders quickly.

Here is a screen shot of one of the big Gelato examples, rendered in 9 seconds on my workstation, using less than 50% CPU utilization while I burned a DVD and watched Cable TV!

An evaluation version of Maya is also available. There is a Gelato plug-in for Maya that renders my models about a third faster than the standard Maya engine, so there are definate Quadro FX floating-point enhancements in Gelato...

did some rearranging today and managed to turn my rectangle desk into an "L" desk by moving the drawyers to the side, the result was a bunch more deskspace and nice looking new work space

yeah, its the v551, and at the time i was ripping either ghost in the shell 2 or cowboy bebop, don't remember exactly which one.

and yes, that printer is horriable. it makes all kinds of bad clicking/grinding noises, feeds the paper wrong, uses way more ink than it should, has cartrages that cost more than the damn printer, has annoying "talking drivers" (printing started...) just does not work half the time........

i am in the market for a decent cheap lazer

My lexmark printer works well......it's nothing special, and I thought it would kinda suck, but lo and behold, it doesn't! its the Lexmark z816...it prints photos well, and prints very fast as well. Paired with bright white paper, the normal finished draft quality looks very professional! When I do papers, though, I put everything on best quality and use the ultra bright white paper....it looks neato as can be.

But, yeah, the damn "printing started" and "printing complete" is pretty annoying....though I like when it tells me when ink is getting low, because I rarely check that!

That's GITS2 I'm pretty sure, as you can just make out Batou and his pony tail. I know a lot of people didn't like GITS2, but I loved the movie and the question it set forth: What is it to really be human?

What a POS. Everytime I need to buy new cartridges I just buy a new cheap printer.

The entire space is from Teknion, a Canadian office furniture manufacturer. The half-height wall units hide all the cables and provide easy access to several power source junctions. The storage cabinet is convenient and out of the way; I use it for most of my media and reference material. Since the Teknion design is modular, you can configure just about anything you want, any size/length, color, etc.

Here's another shot of the overhead cabinet; there's another "corner station" to the right...

I purchased my Teknion desktop package for just about $1,500 seven years ago. The corner units are more expensive, but all of the other components are less so. Unfortunately, prices have gone up since my 1997 purchase. However, you can usually find used Teknion on eBay for half price. I have seen a bunch of liquidated stuff up for auction; it was especially intense a few years ago during the Internut Meltdown. Moreover, as many jobs continue to move overseas, some of the discarded office furniture eventually appears on eBay...

Then finally, my entertainment stand.

Needless to say...I rarely move from this area

But those are the Naruto Graphic novels.
