Bought these two for the car after returning VM/400. Having trouble with getting the clock above 800MHz. It keeps defaulting back to x6 regardless of what I set the multiplier to; fsb can be pumped no prob. this sucks. bios revision 1012, going to try uber 1013 tomorrow after i borrow a floppy drive from somebody.

crystal cpuid and cpumsr crash when they try to change the multiplier. i believe this has to do with the bios having two registers turned off. please tell me this is fixed in 1013... i asked asus if they could make the VM/400 support mobile chips but they refused.

I'm new to the nforce2 chipset, so i'm at a loss here, i'm an intel guy but mobile bartons attracted me for vehicle usage. thanks a whole lot for helping out, if you need any more info about my system (kingston pc3200 valueram 512, gf2mx :)) please ask, i'll be on about 9pm pst on the 31st to respond to posts.

that a7n8x should work with the mobile, though i don't know if you can use anything over 12.5x multi. i'm assuming you tried them though.. 1012 should be new enough..

oh well. sadly i don't know much about mobile bartons. i'll hand this problem over to someone else

whoot, I can access the forums at work!

have you tried manually setting the multiplier in the bios rather than with a program?

Yes, I tried that first before moving to CrystalCPUID and CPUMSR. Both of those crash, but when rebooting after setting multipliers in the bios, it just changes back.

For the record it's 14x; 133x14=1867 whereas on the regular barton 166x11=1833

or is that why it's resetting? up to 14x is available to me, but i can only use up to 12.5? i haven't tried 12.5 but I will when I get home.

edit: i'm still going to try that but it doesn't make sense... it's supposed to be x14 to make it 1.8ghz, x12.5 would make it 1667mhz...

well i used to have an unlocked barton and an a7n8x for my main rig. i couldn't use anything over 12.5x. it would drop down to what lowest multi and advance from there.
so i guess that would mean 13x is 5x, and 14x would be.... 6x :D

and since you have ram that can do 200mhz, try setting the multi to 9x and the fsb to 200mhz... but only after you verify that you can't use anything over 12.5x

After some more experimentation, that's exactly what's happening. 12.5x is the highest it goes without dropping back down; 13 turns into 5, 13.5 turns into 5.5, and 12 turns into 6.

though now the board is having lan problems so i'll probably exchange it. the hacked 1013 bios didn't help at all.

I actually got it to 2.3ghz unstable - 12.5x and under works. also the bios won't let me select 1.45v manually, but it seems to autodetect it just fine. what a strange board, considering an asus tech says it supports mobile athlons.

i don't think i'm going to worry about this too much - i guess getting a 14x multiplier is just not going to happen. maybe i'll complain to asus some more.

thanks everybody.

why would anyone want to run a xp-m at anything but a >=200mhz FSB. and yes anything over a 12.5x multi is crap on this board. bump your voltage to around a normal xp and see how high it goes.

4.5w total drain which is good for watching long movies on a basic starter battery in a tercel :D

Is it not crap on other boards? It would be nice to have 133x14 actually running. Does Asus make a board that does this, or will I have to look to other brands? I've never bought a motherboard that wasn't Asus...

Ok.

At 1.45v I got to 2.4GHz but it rebooted every once in a while; this is with the regular passive nb heatsink and a crappy thermaltake tmd cpu fan with built-in thermal pad.

whee!

most boards have the issue. you can fix it by doing a quick pin mod, but it's not really needed.

also, 2.4ghz with 1.45v is pretty good, but normal desktop voltage is 1.65 ;)
keep in mind that overclocking will increase power consumption greatly. a 45w 2500+ at 2.4ghz and 1.5v (cause instability sucks) draws about 63w, or 40% more. still pretty low, but negating the purpose of mobile chips for a car ;)
also, if you can do 2.4ghz with stock voltage, why not do stock speeds and drop the voltage as low as you can (if it goes lower?)

it doesn't go lower.

also the computer isn't in the car yet (getting some fibreglassing done, speakers come first) so i can oc my little heart out until it's in :D then it'll probably run at 800mhz because it plays dvds and mp3s and navigates nroute charts just fine.

run it at something like 200 x 8 seriously.. is that a 35w or 45w?? if it is a 35w then you could do 200 x 8 at something like. 1.25v or 1.275v.. that would be plenty fast to run all your stuff.. and the power consumption would be under 30w...

but.. 200 x 8 will not use more power than 133 x 12... and be a hell of a lot faster at the same clockspeed..

long story short.. run the fsb at 200 and underclock the total speed and you should be able to do a respectable speed at very low voltage...

You know, I think I just figured out why I thought that setting it to 14x should set it to 14x and not 6x.

The list of multipliers in the bios goes like this:

13
13.5
14
6.5
7
7.5
8

choosing 13 sets the multiplier to 5, 13.5 to 5.5, 14 to 6....

I think the real problem is a stupid typo.

I missed the whole running in a car thing. my bad, but run at a lower multi at 200FSB. it'll run smoother. I'd load the software that your going to run in the car and find the lowest clock speed and voltage that is useable with the most demanding software you are using.

The mobo will run at the higher multis but not with an unlocked xp-m unless you do the previously mentioned wire trick.

Just for reference... what is the wire trick?

CPU - AMD AthlonXP-M 2500+ @ 2.5Ghz 1.825V
M/B - ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
Video - Sad A$$ Creative GeForce 2 GTS (waiting for plain 6600 AGP)

That is *so close* to what i'm putting in the car... including waiting for a 6600... and the geforce2...

I had found that site previously, but it doesn't say anything about 14x multipliers... thanks anyway though...

under multiplier selection it says "7,00 x SystemBus (14 x FSB)" the Systembus is double pumped like intel's quad pump

I wish i could put this in a car and buy something better... damn bills

ah well, i'm young

...for a while yet
