for awhile now ive been picking up one of my neighbors wireless signal. i usually hang out in my kitchen because theres where i get the best signal because its pretty weak. everytime someone uses the microwave, i lose connection. is this normal?

yes, that's normal.

microwaves cause a lot of interferance for wifi equipment. reading through comments posted by IT support staff in "techrepublic.com" who work for large corporations say that most of their "wireless network disconnect" issues come in around everyone's lunch time (microwave useage interferance).

I'd look into replacing your microwave. Very little to no microwaves should escape the oven enclosure. I've never had any problems with microwaves at any of my installations, which number in the triple digits, including homes, schools (teachers lounges), business etc... No, it's not normal though it's not completely unheard of either. I've read of this being a problem. If I had a problem with it I'd strongly recommend to my customers to think about replacing their microwave. Now 2.4 Ghz phones, that's another story but microwaves "shouldn't" be a problem, at all.

well, your statement that you don't want microwave waves escaping the inside of the oven is true, but you are wrong about the interference with wifi..

microwave ovens can and will cause wireless signal interference. it's not as much of the "microwave waves" thats an issue (although most microwave ovens do leak some microwave waves) as it's the other EMI aspects of the appliance that cause wireless signals to drop. here's some sites that agree that microwave ovens can (and usually do) cause interference:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/10_concept_wireless_range.mspx
http://forums.designtechnica.com/archive/index.php/t-5143.html

there is even work being done to address the EMI concern:

well, don't know about your websites but I'll stand by my andecdotal evidence. And if your microwave is causing you problems, its the 2.4 Ghz microwaves coming from it. Don't really care to get into a debate about it. We can disagree but the "your wrong" statement is sorta silly. Suit yourself. Not on my installations does cause problems.

I'm not sure if in general microwaves do or don't cause problems, but i know in my case it does affect the wifi signal. If my wirless netowrk is on chanel 6, everytime the microwave goes on the signal drops. Where as on chanel 3 it does not. We recently replaced our mivrowave with a new one, and the signal dropped on both the old one and new one.

Just my personal experience.
