Finally! I am Windows free!

After running Linux on all my computers but 1 windows box I kept around for Games I finally slipped in a Ubuntu disc and said good bye . I am so happy right now, the geek inside of me just had to share. Do most of you guys/gals run only Linux , dual boot or have seperate systems>?

I just downloaded Mandrake 10.1 to try linux for my first time. It will be on a separate computer (AXP Athlon, 512mb ram... etc)

I have my first Linux box at home again after many years of being disgruntled by the lack of meaningful Linux documentation... Fedora Core 3... I just use it for folding currently though...

Of course, this same system has swappable HDDs so I can throw in Windows 98SE and play all my old games if I am feeling nostalgic...

My Linux skills are teh suck though... my Solaris skills don't seem to help either.

I'm getting there. Unfortunately, I might never get there with my work machine, due to it being company property and all. My home box is Mandrake 10, I still have a laptop running 2K for compatibility issues, and a server which should make the switch soon. My g/f's machine will be converting soon as well, after I can perfect DVD backups in linux, since hers is the one with the DVD burner. I also need to get UD working with WINE.

I dualboot for my sandbox/AMD64 flavor linux (debian).

I have my fileserver/router/firewall/mail server sitting next to me running debian since 2002.

I play on Windows, I work on Linux

I use linux personally, but my brother and the family computer are winXP boxes. I've been dithering wrt switching to Linux permanently, but in September I removed the last game from my machine and now I have no reason at all for Windows. The flexibility is so much greater with Linux to just do stuff and not have to worry about screwing something up because I installed a new whatever and now nothing works.

I've been a pernament Gentoo GNU/Linux user for almost a year and a half now. The family computer still runs windows 2000, but I did install Linux on it and my dad and brother are warming up to it. Still working on my mom and sister tho .

I have just installed suse linux and have it duel booting with my win xp pro!

My network:

htpc - XP 2500+ box used as (shock!) an HTPC. OSes: MDK Cooker.
zen - Celeron 2.4 @ 3.3 in an ST62K, my desktop box. OSes: MDK Cooker.
toy - my ancient laptop, Sony Vaio Picturebook C1XD with upgrades. OSes: MDK Cooker, Windows 98 OSR2 (hasn't been booted for over a year, I'm just too lazy to remove it).
sammy - Sempron 2400+ in Antec Aria, my partner's desktop. OSes: Windows XP (sigh).

all my media is stored on htpc and shared to the other machines via lufs (having sshd as the only server running on your machine = priceless) for the Linux boxes and winscp for the XP box. samba and nfs just ain't worth it. The Linux boxes are all updated daily using urpmi's handy --parallel feature to download and distribute the packages from zen (yay for efficiency). zen and sammy are ethernet connected to my SMC router / firewall, htpc and toy are wirelessly connected at 802.11g (with WPA, naturally).

I dualboot the general-use computer for games (and the occational photoshop), mostly because I've got a free copy of WinXP anyway, and setting up wine in FreeBSD is kind of messy at the moment. (Cedega and crossoverOffice were even worse, last time I checked. Strongly linux-only, so much that the linuxulator can't handle them.)

The other two computers currently running are the BSD-only NFS-server/netsurfing computer [1], and the equally BSD-only alpha PWS I keep around for playing with. (It's where I tested the assembler syscalls I mentioned in another thread.)

I'm actually tempted to install NT 4 on the alpha, just to see how fast it would be. I've even got a legal copy of NT 4 server. (Courtesy of my old "employer", the army. )

Running pure Linux on my main box. Had a good push in the right direction when I built this system, as the 60GB that held Windows wouldn't work on this board (old drive that 'survived' a power-supply blow out), but the 60GB with Linux did. Most Linux installs can go from system to system without too much trouble, with the notable exception of Suse. I have a harddrive loaded with Mandrake 10 (community beta 1) that has been in 4 separate systems (different everything but harddrive) without being reinstalled.

I'm currently running from a Gentoo LiveDVD ( http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-275608.html ), though, since the EXT2 partition for my Gentoo install got corrupted. I would say 'unfortunately', but this disc has the NVidia accelerated drivers (ATI too) and works with all of my hardware. Works well enough for me to play UT2004 using it (loaded from harddrive, of course).

I mostly play UT2004, so giving up on Windows for 'gaming' wasn't that hard. Only thing I miss is Launchcast. I can't even get it to work under Cross-Over Office, and I can't get Qemu to boot any Windows version I have. Dealing with Windows as an OS full time isn't worth Launchcast (close though). I might install Windows on my Drive-Bay system , if I ever get the wiring done, just for Launchcast. Kind of ironic that I was orginally intending it for a Linux box.

Well, I am running 100% Linux (Gentoo, of course) myself. My girlfriend has a single Windows box (along with a Linux box and Linux laptop), but it is Windows 2003 Server, so I think it is slightly excusable. I think the only thing keeping her from going 100% Linux is The Sims 2.

That is most of my machines. I actually have a couple more Sun boxes running Solaris 10 currently, and a new dual Alpha system that I haven't begun loading an OS on yet.

nerk: yep, you've got me beat, I've never had a need to use a PC for a router, though. dedicated hardware router does all the job I need it to, only costs $80, small and no wireless driver headaches, so meh. We're equal for *Linux* machines, though

The issue with Sims 2 running under Wine/Cedega is that it requires DirectX 9.0c and to date only 9.0b is supported. I'd expect to see it up and running fairly well in the coming months, so there is hope for those whose wives/girlfriends insist on having that crap on your systems

I end up using the laptop the most out of all those systems. Second most used would be the Desktop. I don't have time to play with the test bed machine often. So they just Fold.

My wife has asked about me switching her to Linux. I should drop in a Mepis CD and save the config to a Flash drive and see how she likes it.

i really dig the apt-get function in debian. not familiar with many other distros at this point in time, but its very nice

Fritz: This is the comp in my sig and is my main desktop. It dual boots with WinXP Pro being the other option, and that's only used for 2 things: video games & making DVDs.
Alphonse: My ancient Dell laptop (P-300). I got SuSE 9.0 on it and it works, but is a bit slow. Unfortunately, the CD-ROM drive is dying; so I can't really try out any LiveCDs on it to see what might work better.
Pumpkin: This is the fiancée's dekstop and it's also running SuSE 9.0. Previously it had WinME on it. Don't laugh, it was actually stable for a couple of years (and no other Windows OS that I had handy would boot correctly), but a couple of months back it went nuts and was crashing a couple of times a day. I loaded SuSE on it and while she's still adjusting to it; she seems pretty happy.
Whatever: The fiancée's laptop, it's even older than mine and is still running Win98 (not even Win98SE). It's CD-ROM is working fine but with only 64MB of RAM; I haven't found a Live CD that will run on it yet. And everytime I talk about loading Linux on it; she gives me the LOOK and I drop the subject.
Magic Carpet: This was my old desktop and has been recommissioned as a small file server for our entirely too large collection of fan-subbed anime. It's currently running SuSE 9.0, but I'm planning on upgrading it to 9.2 or maybe 9.3 later this year.
