I dont know if what i am looking for exists yet, but i figured i would ask anyways.

i am looking for a large screen pda almost like a tablet pc, all i need it for is for ebooks and taking notes in class. what i am really thinking is one of those things they used to have in startrek about the size of a small legal pad, and thinner than most tablets. again i am basically looking for an oversized PDA since i really dont need the power of most tablet PC's

Yep, Sony U50 or U70 are what you're looking for. The Sony U50s are down to about $1500 or so now, so quite affordable.

PDA not small computer, i recommend the Dell Axim X50, and for $1500 do you have any clue what kind of a laptop you could get for that? i wouldn't spend $1500 on a crappy sony

the axim is only $600CDN for a top of the line w/ Dual wireless dual flash slots. and for only 100 more you can get the bluetooth KB for note taking. i see tons of people use pdas in stead of laptops in class since they can just fold everything up throw it in their pocket and walk out.

There's also the oh so svelte OQO "JESUS CHRIST THAT'S TINY!" PC. Full fledged Windows PC in a PDA size with Thumb keyboard and trak-stick and stylus. Even has USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394. I beleive it comes with the Desktop docking station which lets you use a real keyboard, mouse, and Monitor. Sure its 2 grand, but hey this is the [H] where if it isn't fast, it better be small and ultra-portable regardless of price tag.

Have you checked out a TC1100 or TC1000? I know you said you dont want a true TabletPC, but a TC1000 may be right up your alley, without the keyboard, its pretty thin (thinner than a powerbook). You can pickup a TC1000 on ebay pretty cheep right now, and its not too powerful, but powerful enough to be useful.

I've wanted one since the first time I saw one. They are so sweet. They run full MS Windows XP Pro.

I would stay away from the TC1000 / TC1100 from personal experience the processor in the TC1000 is dead slow (Transmeta 800mhz) the TC1100 I beta tested for a while with a centrino wasn't much faster. So just be aware when checking those ones out.

thanks for all the sugestions, the compaq does look interesting, however like i said i am really looking for a large screen pocket pc, i used to use a dell axim and liked it, and it would suit my pourpose, however i feel the screen was just too small, i am looking for something the size of a small legal pad

I’ve been using a TC1100 well over a year now as a primary work PC, I’ve never had a issue with speed even when running AutoCAD and other intensive programs. Sure it’s not a PC or a powerful laptop, but performance is more than adequate for most uses.

Unfortunately I’ve never seen a large screen pda so I cant help you out much more L Maybe a Newton? :D that had a relatively large screen.

The Axim screen is still the same size as pretty much any other PDA out there... and coming from somebody who has went through a half dozen different PDAs in about 10 years, and through almost every circumstances imaginable, including taking notes,, i can tell you that a PDA is not something you want to take notes on, at least not without a keyboard. Even if you get a keyboard and can type 60+ words a minute, formatting notes, even the most basic, gets tiresome on the tiny screens.

exactly, however i have a laptop already, and even a thin tablet is just alittle too bulky for my use. i guess ill just have to wait a few more years for something like this :( such a pitty, it would be an awesome design for students

Here's a review of the U50... i don't think you'll get too much smaller than it is now, at least until OLED comes out.
