Heres my long rant about how I have finally concluded that Sony is a piece of shit.

It was the year 2000. My brother and I had been saving our hard earned cash for a Play Station 2. Countless nights before its release discussing what we would buy for it, games, internet and so forth. My brother was in grade 2, I was in grade 5. Together we got $500 and another heap of $$$ from our parents. Of course back then DVD Players were unheard of and my parents wanted the best for their children. They tossed the $500 in for DVDs and stuff we might need.

In 1999 my father, brother and I strolled into the Sony Story to get our names on the waiting list for the PS2 shocked we got the first spot!

Constantly calling to make sure we were still number one.

In April of 2000 we walked into the store to get information about release dates, prices and games. Of course we checked the list too, our name was still #1.

September and October had rolled around, all I could write about in my Grade 5 journal was how I was getting my PS2, of course my teacher thought I was full of shit. Even after the PS2 was released on Oct 26th, 2000 he still didn't believe me.

I had the one copy of Smugglers Run, and the other one copy of Fantavision. The only two games in Saskatoon which only one copy was shipped. My family, Toys R Us, Sony Store and another family you had a freaking news paper article on them got our PS2s, Only four were shipped to Saskatoon on its release day. October 26th, 2005.

PS2 was great, I got SSX For my birthday in November and a few games for Christmas.. But this land of Eye Candy and fun was about to end.. I got the dreaded Disc Read Error by Febuary of that year. I always made good point to keep my Playstation2 off the carpet etc.

My dad bought 2 years of warrenty the same day as we bought our PS2 so we were set till Grade 7 which would have been the year 2002. I begged and pleaded for them to get more but they didn't.. The PS2 had the dreaded disc read error AGAIN but this was permanent. It would work every now and then.. But I just gave up on it.

Tonight I tried to Play my beloved PlayStation2.. Disc Read Error... I vaccuum and ran it through every game, vertical and horizontal.

I quit. Sony, I greatly apperciate you screwing me over royalling on my PS2 which I did buy the day it was released.

Sony will NEVER get another penny from me.

Im pissed off I think I might have to call their support shit.

Btw im in gr 9 now.

ive also had my ps2 since day one (my first game was fantivision, cool game at first, but sucky after 20 mins :p), and fortunately, no problems to report. sorry to hear about yours bro.

dont know how mechanical you are, but if you take it apart, then remove the drive top as well, you can adjust the laser on it. I got DD's all the time until I adjusted the laser and now it works perfect again. Just google Playstation 2 Laser Adjustment.

I had gotten that error too. Sony wanted 125 bucks to fix it AND pay for shipping. At that point I went PC only for gaming

I know a few friends who have had that also, strangely enough my Gamecube hasn't encountered those errors though :D I have had it since day one back in November 2001 also.

same thing happened with my PS2 :(
i wanted to buy GT4, but i refuse to buy it again for that game ...(even though the only reason i bought the PS2 in the first place was for GT3)

I got my ps2 the day it came out and I also had this dreaded disc read error. Many of the generation 1 ps2s had this bad error. I ended up sending my ps2 in for sony and they would fix it for free. I also had to send in my games and they would replace them. A month or so later i get my ps2 back, but with no games. A week or so later my games come back and im shocked that the box is much smaller than the one i shipped it in. I open the box and there is a check for 500$ and half of my games are missing. My ps2 still had the disc read error so that was a waste of time.

And so i decided to sell it and keep the games and i did just that. I sold it for like 250$ on ebay surprise surprise. Then eventually i bought the gen4 ps2 with the online adapter and such. Never had a problem with this one. So your not the only one that has gone through this.

They are just like every other business they make mistakes. And you cannot tell me that microsoft has never made a mistake cough *windows me* cough So yeah thats my ps2 saga.

ok so you dont like the idea of buying a PS2 and then a while later you get a disc read error and then turn around and sell it to someone even though you know it has major problems.....wow thats just great.

i never had a ps2, but have heard about tons and tons of people with disc read error, i work at a gamestop and we have them come in about one a week, we've even had a slim model come back already. I have had my xbox since midnight launch day, first person in my town, and i've had zero problems with it. i've had my ps1 for a long time and it still works beautifully, my cousin got his dreamcast on launch day and i got one shortly after, i sold mine (which i regret) but his still works perfectly. i've got my friends snes and n64 here and they both work great. i just got a used gamecube that looks really old and it works fine. The only hardware related problems i've had are 2 MSI mobo's i ordered from newegg that were doa, and my creative labs nomad zen nx just stopped working after a year.

So I haven't had any problems with any of my consoles.

But that's not stopping me from getting the 1 year extended warranty with my psp :p

I hear Sony voluntarily replaces bum lasers for free if you use the right words; even if they're no longer under warranty.

But I do know where you're coming from. I bought a PS2 on launch day and it's still chugging along even after working with backup media, so I guess I was one of the lucky ones. However, the bulk of my customers (I do mods and repairs for the local area) come in to get their lasers re-adjusted or replaced which usually has them shelling out $10 - $60 depending on which service they need.

2nd Generation PS2 owner here, everybody gets the disc read error, especially if they try to play just DVDs on them. Sony has been known to replace whole consoles, so try doing that.

in my city. theres a sony repair store. i just went there and they fixed my ps2 for free. this was.. like 3 years after the warranty expired.

if you dont care anymore, type in disk read error ps2 in google.

there are instructions on the internet for fixing the problem most of the time its the laser going out of alignment and all you have to do is, move the dials back or forward one.

did it to a kids ps2 for 20 bucks :)

Most PS2s fail after 2 years or so. I know this for a fact. I used to work at a game shop and i get people complaining about disc reading errors and halting after they've owned the machine for a while. The laser was designed to fail so you would need to buy another machine if you want to keep playing. Shinji Mikami (creator of Resident Evil series) openly voiced his anger about this a while ago. He had to buy two machines because of this problem. I own 3 machines because of this. These f***ers designed them so they would fail shortly after your warranty has expired. There's no point fixing it either as replacing the laser is almost as expensive as the machine.

I got my PS2 December of the year they came out, so it's gen 1 I guess. It still works fine, been playing GT4 a lot lately. I doubt they design their hardware to break after a year or two - if so, my PS2 is a miracle.

Not all of them fail. But a LOT of them do. I've seen it with my own eyes. I've dealt with hundreds of machines myself and it's not an illusion. You just happen to be lucky. So just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

"Mikami accused Sony of purposely designing their consoles to break easily so that gamers will have to buy a replacement. He also said that Sony's high sales figures are helped by the fact that many gamers, himself included, have had to buy a second PlayStation and PlayStation 2."

Due to Sony losing a class-action lawsuit, they have to fix Disk Read Errors for free.

Take a look over at GameFAQs at their PS2 console FAQs. One of them should have some info on the lawsuit and getting your PS2 fixed.

Morrel of the Story is By an XBOX :p

Xbox isn't any better, I never read that the PS2 had a faulty power cable to caused fires (Hell never seen any system have that issue). How about Faulty HD's at launch?

All First Gen Systems had issues. Even the Dreamcast...

Lucky for me, I never had any issues with any of my systems. They all to this day are running like new, Even my PS2 which I purchased at Launch when I worked at EB.

I specifically said in the ebay auction that this was a BROKEN ps2 with a disc read error. It was back when people didn't care if they were broke or not they would find someone to fix it. I said their was more in the acution theirs nothing more than i can do. He also gave me good feedback which makes me assume that he liked what he got.

i've never had a problem with my PS2 and i've been using it regularly since i bought it... some PS2s do break... some Xboxes break (just look at HOCPs archives, and search for steve's adventures with 3 broken Xboxes)

it's a piece of equipment with moving parts... sometimes they wear out and break... just like DVD players, CD players, CD roms, computer fans, etc. etc. break

you can't really compare it to gaming hardware that used solid state media (Genesis, Super Nintendo)... no moving parts means there's almost nothing to wear out... and yet everyone who had the original Nintendo remembers that by the end of it's life, you had to insert/reinsert a game cartridge several times for it to work correctly since even metal contacts eventually wear out, and that's the simples possible interface!

That is a pretty lose story and sorry to hear about your DRE issues =(
I've had my 1st gen Japanese ps2 since it first came out in japan/shipped to the US(Hawaii).
Until (I think) 5months ago, it worked fine...Then died due to an overheating issue...Anyone got ideas how I could fix this badboy?
Cost me roughly $600, but an investment well worth the time I've had it...And man saving up $ during HS wasn't an easy task for an unemployed gamer =D
Neway, I recently picked up the new Japanese slim pstwo/gt4 racing bundle for another wad of $...But man, I think its money well spent...Cuz GT4 is win ;D

I got my PS1 and PS2 the first weeks of both their releases.

They both work fine as if I just took them out of the box :D

What you said there was pretty extreme. Sony is fairly integrated into the consumer market that it would be hard to just steer clear of all of Sony's different arms--for example, Columbia Pictures is a big one and personally, I couldn't write Sony off because I watch a lot of movies and DVDs and a lot of them are produced by Columbia, whose parent company is Sony.

That's unfortunate, I know I wouldn't be happy if my PS2 (SCPH-50001) died on me, but it hasn't yet, and I don't believe it will. I've played some very memorable games and have had a great experience with my PS2. I will definately be getting a PS3, but probably not immediately after launch.

On a side note, I was born in Saskatoon :p

well since he knew he was buying a broken/non-working item then i take back my statement. you didnt say that he knew it was broken though. thats why i was a little shocked that you sold someone a faulty PS2. since he knew then its all good.

Take some 90 % rubbing alcohol and clean off the DVD rom lens. I do it once every three months because of these problems.
(Don't even play it more than 4 hours a month)

Also, google PS2 laser realignment. Another PS2 problem.

My PS2 story...

I reserved one rather late, I was probably #40 or so on the list...
However, I was rather well known at the EB I went to since I used to work at the mall. When the PS2 came out, I got a call from said EB "Hey, someone didn't pick up their PS2, the store closes in 30 minutes, if you want one, lemme know."

So, a few years later, I go to play FFX-2 I think... DRE (I think it was my PS2's way of protecting me from that game...) I called Sony up and even though my PS2 was horribly out of warranty, they replaced it. I called em up, told em I was getting DREs, that I tried blowing it out with compressed air and was wondering if there was anything else I could do. The guy told me to ship it in and they'd take care of the rest.

I wouldn't bring up the vacuuming thing though...

My gen1 ps2 (also on waiting list) got that whole disc read error stuff like last year. All I did was save some money and bought a slim line, it's swweet. I think three years for my ps2 held up pretty good, considering all the hell it went through. And I love the xbox people, ugh, my girlfriends xbox freezes all the time on her. I've never had my ps2 freeze during gameplay.

one day my gamecube wouldnt play games anymore, a quick call to nintendo, them paying for everything, and 3 days later I had a working gamecube with nothing wrong with it.

playing video games in grade 9? don't you care about your grades? your social life?

I've been playing games since I was in the third grade and though my social life could be a little better, my grades have never been hurt due to gaming.
