i have lots of friends that want to get a computer. mostly for internet. no high speed games that you would need a $1000 comp for. so including everything, what would like a 1gighz comp cost? 17'' moniter, 80 gig hard drive, 2.1 speakers.... the works. software (can prolly just instal mine for them)..
would it be best to buy a dell or peice one together from newegg?

Well, since that is against the law. I would say Dell. I have seen decent computers on Dell for as little as 399 with everything shipped to your door. While it won't be a barn-burner...it will get office and net stuff done no problem.

If yall are at a place of higher learning, perhaps they're in on the microsoft junk for cheap thing. Legal I do believe, and not much moolah.

Agreed on the Dell, and other mainstream consumer computer makers. Your friends can just go to a place like Circuit City and get an Emachines for around 400$ with 17 monitor, free printer, fast processor, etc. They're cheap because they come with either onboard/low-end video cards, and proprietory parts.

If you really want an older processor like a 1 gig, you'll find them on ebay or some other seller listing site.

If you are good with computers, its not much work to peice a few together from goodwill/ebay. Of couse, you wont find a 1Ghz comp at goodwill.

If your just inner-netting, Wordprocessing, and listening to music, buy a P90 with 32mb of ram and load up Beos 5 PE.

Now, About five minutes from now, some retarted will post after me saying how you cant do shit on anything slower than an FX55. Im still using my 486DX4-120 with 64mb of ram, as a HTPC. I watch tv, schoolwork, inner-net, rip n burn MP3s, and play old games.

There is also the "laptop" for under $300. My Toshiba 2250XCDS @ 600Mhz with 64 megs of ram, win98se, hauls ass. I paid 200$ for it.

Go for a Beos5 machine with a P90, a laptop for under 300, or peice together an older K7/Celeron/
