I'm looking to buy a high end laptop/desktop replacement in the next 6 months or so. Is there any technology I should be on the lookout for? Any advice suggestions? Video quality is very important as I am an avid gamer. Any video cards that you would recommend? Can you tell me the difference between the 6800 Go and the Quadro? I did a little reading and the Quadro is a workstation card, does this mean that the performance difference in games will be negligible? What processors do you like? I've always been an AMD fan and the 64 bit processor is intriguing, however people seem to like Intel in the mobile market. My budget is approximately $6000-$10000 (though I'd rather not get too close to the 10,000 mark). Do you recommend a specific laptop manufacturer? Also, can you recommend a screen format (WSXGA, WUXGA, ... whatever else =P)

My main priority is high end gaming. I need a laptop because my occupation requires the ability to take my workstation with me at a moment's notice.

not to seam rude but where are you look that selling you 6k+ notebooks.
For a good high end, i dont think you would be spending much over 3000.

If you want a mobile gaming rig, know that you are not going to get squat for battery life. That having been said, I would check out Dell's XPR series. Alienware makes some beefy gaming laptops as well but as said above, these are going to be spendy and have a very limited battery. Have fun though.

Are you also planning to use this to do work? Or are you THAT much of a gamer that you want to drag a 12+lb laptop everywhere you go just so you can have your gaming fix at a moment's notice? lol There are workstation laptops that runs around that price range, but doesnt mean they are necessarily good for play games (definitely not a good value if all you want to do is play games on them!). If gaming is your only concern, I'd get a $3000 model (plenty of those around, from Sagers to Dells), and use the rest of the money to buy yourself a nice vacation. ^_^

cheers,

yass

Yes I will use this laptop for work as well as play. However the work requirements are fairly limited, to use a computer for work I merely need a sound card that can play back audio files (quality isn't really an issue as long as I can understand someone talking into a microphone) and basic word processing functionality. Gaming is definitely the area that will determine which laptop I get. I am looking to get a laptop that will be able to play games for a few years (maybe not with all the settings on high but still ...) My current PC is a 1ghz GeForce3 512mb RAM pc I built 4 years ago and it still runs most games fine ... I'd like to have the same results with my laptop (hence the high budget) I hope this helps you help me :)

I'd go for the upcoming Sager 7620 if I were in the market for a top-notch, desktop replacement laptop. The 7620 has all the power of the Sager 9860, but in a smaller form. It weighs about 10 pounds and can be equipped with a 15" UXGA, 15.4" WSXGA+ or 15.4" WUXGA screen. I'm not sure when the 7620 is scheduled for release, but it'll probably be available by March.

the highest end sager is only $4500 and you already have 3.8GHz P4 Dual HDD 100GB in Raid 0 or raid 1 + Dual 8x DVDRW X800 pro 256Mb

right now probably nothing is faster for price

I say go for the Acer 2012WLMI. I bought mine back in August.
Specs:
6.7 lbs
1.5" thick when closed, <1" thick when open
1.5GHZ Pentium-M (comparable to a 2.4 - 2.66GHZ Pentium 4)
512MB pc2700 Ram (2x 256MB sticks)
mobility 9700
60GB hard drive (5400rpm I believe)
DVD+/- RW
15.4" WXGA (1280x800 resolution, any higher is annoying to look at IMHO)

It was only $1400 when I bought it, should sell for like $1300 these days.
It might not be the most superb out there but it mixes power (able to play HL2 and Doom III fine) with lightness and battery time. I get about 5 hours doing office work and 3 hours playing games or watching a DVD.

I highly recommend it.

thats not high end enough although it is a sweet system, i was concidering it until i say the HDD was 4200 and then i decided to just build my own

yeah, it is 4200rpm but 8MB cache so it's really no different than a 5400, but I'm gonna upgrade the hard drive to a 80GB 7200rpm soon.
