Im looking for a new mobo for my athlon 2600 mobile.I know that all socket a mobos arent compatible but which are and which would you guys most recomend for it .looking to spend 50 to 60 dollars.would the :
ABIT "NF7-S2" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard.be a good choice and compatible.

Shuttle AN35/N, ULTRA etc
NF-7/NF7-S V2.0
Jetway N2PAP, OEM board
AN7
DFI Lanparty

Shuttle AN35 Ultra is a no-frills overclocking mofo...

MD

I'll vouch for the shuttle being a good board at a very reasonable price. It has almost every option in the bios you would ever need to overclock.

The blue pcb looks nice too.

I was thinking of getting the abit nf7 since I can pick it up at my local fry's electronic store for 65 dollars .Is there a performance difference between this one and the nf7-m,nf7-s2,besides onboard video and a sata controller.Would i need to reinstall windows or would it be ok for a while.Old board used a nforce ultra 400 chipset.

the nf7-s2 is probably the crappy one that you can't overclock.. i thought it was sg2 though.. i don't know what an nf7-m is.. maybe integrated video or something.. the nf7 and nf7-s were good overclockers.. from what i have heard the an7 is better, but never took off becuase it came out after a64.. and people getting new stuff were going to a64 by then..

and MD,, my mom has an n2pap and it is a piece of shit that won't do anything.. it is stable, but i can't oc anything on it.. do you need a hacked bios or what?

The NF7-S(Rev.2.0) was a great OCer, and if you can get your hands on it, then I'd recommend that you pick it up. I would STRONGLY recommend against a DFI Lanparty board...They are reasonably prone to the "cold boot problem" and the main centre for help regarding DFI boards (dfistreet.com) is terrible. The mods are more than happy to delete posts that make it seems as though there is a serious issue with their mobos, and often inform users that the Socket A mobos are "old technology" that "isn't really supported anymore." Now, I'll admit that I'm bitter after putting in 50+ hours to get a Lanparty to freaking work with a modium of stabliity this summer, but based on the reading that I did, they are not boards that are fun to deal with. Yes, you might get an amazing OC with them, but they're some of the pickiest boards that I've ever had the displeasure of handling.

now that i think about it.. she probably has a lite.. it was cheap.. $60 at the local chinese owned comptuer store.. they printed a price sheet with that day's date on it saying they had a $50 socket A board.. and then we asked for it and they said it was sold out.. so we got a $60 jetway.. we also got a psu and amd 2000+.. and they let us return the 2000+ after we determined that we didn't need it and it was her mobo that died, and the psu was a piece of shit..

so they bait and switched us, but let us return a cpu with no restocking fee.. i have a mixed opinion of that place.. haha.. it doesn't matter though.. her 1.2 duron already runs at over 60c.. so i am not going to try to push it higher.. the memory runs at 200 and cpu at 100.. and even though it is async.. it works well haha... i do think it would be cool if the bios would let me run the ram at 1-1-1 @ 100 just to see how fast it would be..

How come no body is saying Asus A7N8X Deluxe or -E Deluxe.

I had the -E and it was a awesome board....had my Barton 2500 @ 218x10 and was ROCK solid stable. Love that board....I even got it to 220x10 with new ram, but built new machine a few days later.

From my experiences with the ASUS line of NF2 boards, they tend to be kind of hit and miss. I mean, they can be really great board, but they can also be boards from hell. I've had to deal with 3 of them, and only one has been "oddity free." I wouldn't recommend the ASUS line of boards, unless you're willing to gamble with what you'lll get...

abit nf7-s is great oc'er and is more reliable than dfi lan party. plus it is pricey nicely.

if you get nf7-s i have a board dedicated to it here

with new mobo = reformat
nf7-s v2 is what you want. not nf7-m or anything else.

Wouldn't the nf7-rev2 be the same as the nf7-sv2 performance wise,What does the nf7-sv2 board have that the nf7-rev2 doesn't have.

abit released an NF7 board with very few overclockign options.. i think it is the nf7-sg2..

the abit an7 is nice from what i hear, but unless it is used, or a refurb you can't get one in your price range..

if you don't mind refurbs.. newegg has some A7N8X-X boards for $30 in their refurb section.. i don't know what the -x is it isn't an E or Deluxe.. so you would have to research the extent of its OC abilities..

but right now there are a ton of newegg refurbs.. so if you are up to it, you could probably get a good cheap socket A board..

Yes they did I just found out first hand. I got a NF7-S2G thinking it was just the NF7-S v.2 with gigabit. Instead I got some budget POS with out multiplier adjustments, my mobile 2500+ was stuck at a 6x mult. So I returned the board.

In a different system I have a mobile 2500+ with the shuttle AN35 it was $60 a year ago and has been going strong with out problems at 2.3GHz (11.5x200) since I put it together. I would reccomend the AN35 if you dont need SATA, it's a great board for the money.

Unfortunately I didnt see that other post saying I shouldn't of gotten the nf7-sg2 mobo because I was busy today and I picked it up and my multiplier is stuck at 6 on my athlon mobile 2600 would the latest bios help or can i change it on the motherboard. :

http://www.ocinside.de/index_e.html

click workshop, then click "interactive pin mod guide" under socket A..

basically you take small pieces of wire and connect the sets of holes in your socket that are shown...

or return the board.. your choice.. maybe you could flash a normal nf7 bios to that board, but if it doesn't work you have a paperweight..

DFI LAN PARTY NFII Ultra rev B.

Best board I've used to oc my 2500 mobile

If you want to see why I think this check out http://dfi-street.com/forum/

and check out my OC

See sig as well

I've got an Abit NF7-S as well. Both are good but the DFI is better and has more voltage if necessary.

what voltage are you running to your memory? you can see mine just go to waste because i got the one motherboard that ytou can't up the memory voltage on, and the ram that likes voltage the most...

3.3v once i get my pcp&c i can run it at 4v thats gonna be fun maybe just 3.6 though, we'll see.
