What to upgrade?

Hi, just wanted a little feedback about my setup.

I'm running a 3.0E, with pretty generic Geil PC3200 ram. I'm upgraing my video card within the month, and I'm wondering if I should buy what I've been looking at, the Leadtek 6600GT, or spend another hundred and get a 6800GT. I want to have this card for awhile. Will my processor or ram hold back the 6800GT? My full comp specs are in my sig, let me know what I should upgrade. Thanks.

Anything short of maybe a FX-55 will hold a 6800 GT back to some extent at some settings. But you will still get killer performance from a 6800 GT compared to a 6600 GT

the 6800gt is a perfect mesh for your system. I think you will find yourself GPU limited with the 6600gt with your rig.

I made the splurge for the 6800gt myself and I should be very happy for a good while.

Even the FX-55 is limited to some extent. And just because PC's are the way that they are, you'll be CPU limited to some degree always. His CPU even at 3.0GHz is still a very good match for a 6800GT. I know people that run them on stock 3.0GHz's all the time and they get very good performance. If it's so CPU limited why do they get a hefty performance boost OC'ing their video card to Ultra speeds with a stock 3.0C or 3.0E?

While it's true that the further down you scale the processor speed the worse your performance is with a card like that. At some point (somewhere after 3.0GHz on a P4) the performance increases are much smaller.

A 2.0GHz for example will give you asstastic performance. It's not until you get to 2.6GHz or 2.8GHz that things really start to pickup by leaps and bounds, then it drops back off to much more incremental performance jumps.

If you don't mind a used eVGA 6800GT I know somoene selling one for $325 shipped. PM me if you're interested.

You will get better performance with the 6800GT than the 6600GT and I think the 6600GT may end up bottlenecking your CPU at 3.6 GHZ. Have you looked at the 6800 Non Ultra? That's the card that is between the 6800GT and 6600GT in performance. It would be cheaper than the 6800GT, and there is a softmod to turn them into 6800GTs, or even a 6800U if you get a good overclocker. But if you are going to choose between just those two cards, go with the 6800GT.

well 3.6 is what i use now, i'm using a pretty low-end heatsink. i'll be buying an xp-120 and i should be past 4ghz easily. will my ram not affect my performance if i get the 6800gt?

I agree with everyone on the 6800 GT. I have a 256 MB eVGA 6800 GT and coming from a person who upgraded from a FX5200 this card is just insane! Need For Speed Underground 2 @ full detail is no match for this card. Plus it would mix and match really nice with the setup you have going on.

lol god, the stuff you guys make me do. i guess i'll be aiming this pile of money toward a 6800GT. only ~200 more lol.

Softmodding the NU doesn't always work... and even if it does, you'll have a hell of a time gettnig them to 400/1100...

yea exactly, that's why i didn't want to get a 6800nu.

I think his system is fine and that ocing to cpu will probably help out. Id go with the gt so i wont worry for upcoming games in the future. I would get the gt so i know that the power is there if i ever upgrade my cpu or ram.
