x800 vs 6800 GT

With the likes of me? What makes you think the people who run Nvidia or I care anything about the likes of you? You're not famous or important enough for me to associate with, so who cares what you want. You don't know who I am or anything about me other than I don't like ATI drivers. :D Don't be such a drama queen. You can tell the difference between bilinear and trilinear mip maps if you can tell thedifference between 70 and 75 fps.

ATI's got great frame rates now but they sacrafice the IQ to do it. You can see it in the tests clearly that the areas of forced low Q are huge in ATI and far different from the reference, where as Nvidia's patterns come out very near reference.
Erm.. sorry mr ego centric guy, I meant be associated with !!!!!!s like you, I dont give a shit what you think of me, since you're such a blatent !!!!!!.
You say ati gives up IQ for speed.. a huh.. a bit backwards there, NV30 anyone??
Ati has been doing briliniar filterting since the 9600, no one seemed to notice, and ati has less issues with shimmering and st-st-stuttering.
This is exactly what I'm talking about, I don't wanna be associated with people who try to make nvidia off to be some picture perfect company, when they have questionable business practices, and their IQ is cleary fine, or more people would make huge threads about shimmering.
Fact is that ati does better briliniar filterting than nvidia, so they don't need to give you the option to turn it off, since the difference would only be seen in SS with 400% zoom.
And nvidia still does brilin by default, when they have it off by default, then I'll agree with you, but since they want to have as high as fps as possible in reviews, just like ati, it won't happen.

I'm less inclined to believe that you know what you're talking about since you misspell the word B I L I N E A R multiple times in your post. You obviously don't know the difference between reference quality and simulated quality. I've got an ATI card, and I agree that the FX was a big stumbling block for Nvidia. Surely you must realize that brand loyalty must come from something more than arbitrary fandom. As far as questionable business practices go, mislabling their IQ settings and using HSF's that fall off and kill their BBATI cards is hardly scrupulous.

I figured I misspelled it, but since this isn't a grammir(sic) forum, I couldn't care less.
I hate people who try to justify their bias by saying they have, or have had a competitors card, it's quite funny that they think it makes them less biased, when it just shows how little they know about them selves.

I call shens on both sides :p ^^^ I own both a 6800GT and a X800XTPE ;) And the nVIDIA drivers are nothing short of PATHETIC for this range of cards.Shimmering Never ending betta BS constant game fuckups Broken Video playback. The list goes on ;) But the card its self is a Gem!
The X800XTPE is harder to find than rocking horse shit. And costs as much as a house to own  But the drivers have been constant and rock solid here.Quite (Better IQ to me at least)
So to me they both have faults and they both have good things to them as well.Just please dont tell me the Poorware drivers are excellent because from where im standing they are currently worse than VIA chipset drivers lmfao.

Do some of you argue just to bump up your post count? Jeebus.

Brilinear = Shorthand for the filtering tweak, hack, whatever, that nVidia and ATI use to bump up performance. It's quality is somewhere between that of true bilinear and trilinear. I thought we ALL knew this.

Wow... just wow...

Seriously. The fan on the x800 is quieter than the fan on the 6800, stock. The x800 pro is slower than the 6800gt, but not by much. The 6800gt is slower than the x800xt, but not by much. (*depending on system, application and the corelation between the moons of Saturn and starlight from the Andomeda galaxy.)

Image quality is very similar, other than Far Cry (if you like overbright, jaggy filled, HDR., Which I don't.)

My recomendation is still, pick up whichever one you can get the best deal on. Except a x800 pro, only get one of those if you can find a VIVO for cheap and hate warranties.

Its funny that you'd say that about HDR after reading its positive reviews and seeing the actual difference it can make in images. Maybe you set your gamma too high or have a poor monitor because it looks great on this one. If you look at the images, they look higher contrast, not overly bright, if anything at all. The regular lighting looks washed out and flat by comparison.

That shimmering in the Nvidia drivers is a problem I've never had, but I know some people have, and also that its been fixed. Now if you could just find a way to fix the horrendous banding on my ATI card. I guess they think the depth of the trilinear or anisotropic filtered textures only needs to be on objects directly in the forground and not even extend to the midground. If you don't believe me and you have a decent monitor, try Halo @ 1280x1024 with the latest drivers, force HQ on everything, AF2X and you'll see what im talking about...

I just didn't like it that much... we all have different tastes. Personally I prefer Far Cry at 1600x1200 with 4x AA and 8x AF. Of course my 6800 choked at those settings, so before I returned it to the store I had to play at 1280x1024/4xAA/8xAF.

HDR just seems like an overdone whiz bang feature. I can see it's potential, but I'm not too fond of the current implimentation. Meh, that's me. Use what you like...

I'm pretty happy with my VIVO though. It's quieter... I have a XPC, so NVSilencers aren't an option. (Now, where did I leave that Halo CD?)

You may have answered this already, but which ATI card do you have?

BBATI 9800 pro with heatsinks on the ram since it doesnt come with any. I need to replace the stupid cheap stock cooler too cuz the fan hardly works on it. You really have to see the poor filtering banding in Halo to believe it. Its not just barely noticable like everyone says, it REALLY jumps out at you in that game. I think a lot of people say the ATI IQ is so much better because it has sharper text and 2D images.

If you do objective comparisons using the tests that show the pattern of "optimized" filtering areas vs. real filtering(i.e. the reference) you'll see that Nvidia does in fact do a better job. What does this mean? It means that the Nvidia cards get slower frame rates because they don't use tricks to get higher fps. Whether or not you notice or care about the tricks is entirely subjective. Just don't say that they aren't there.

Hrmm... I really like the IQ on my 9800pro. Right up until it decided it didn't like being clocked at 450mhz. The green snow was kinda psychadelic though. Oooo... trippy... :D

Crap, it's Xmas Eve. Guess it's time to go shopping...

didn't think my thread would turn out to be a couple guys bitching at each other...lol
everyone has their right to their opinion...so just step back and calm down..

Merry Christmas everyone! :)

I went with a 6800GT this round only because I couldn't find an X800XT for 450 bucks (which is the MSRP) and found a 6800GT for 385 with Doom 3 (not that I give a shit about this game). So let's see what happens next since my card arrives on New Year's Eve.

Thats where I'm at too.

Both lines are excellent. This isn't Intel vs. AMD we are talking about. Gamers can and will benefit from either card and either line.

To me the bigger issue is which card to get within the line and if you get soem freebie crap like 4 full games. If I spend 400 bucks I want some games even though I'll play EQ2 99% of the time anyways.

I'm looking at a 6800GT from Leadtek because it comes with great stock cooling and OC's well from all the reports I've read. BUT, if I see a great deal in here or AT sale forums I will most gladly take a nice x800xt.

o yeah...one more question
is 256mb worth the extra $105???
cause the 128mb 6800's are 300 and the 256mb 6800 is $405+
cause thats quite a difference for 128mb of ram

i was on newegg and those were prices...where else thats trushworthly could i get one?
perhaps a link to a couple?

Do as I say but not as I do or something like that?
Erm where did you get that from?
That must have been a mod edit.
How about this
"Newegg, as of late, has been charing up the arse for videocards".
I used to like newegg because of their pricing, but now that they're big and all, they apparently can charge whatever the hell they want.

Np.. it happens

ok anyway....what are some other trustworthly sites i could goto to buy a 6800 gt 256mb.....

get the 6800GT and then with the rest of the money get some speed and everygame will seem fast as shit

i would hope so there is more pipes.....
pipes= not valid, since the X800 pro has higher clockrate( but its shader performance suffers), who cares about clockspeed when comparing two cards, compare the pricing.

This will come down to one major factor, SOUND LEVEL. The 6800GT and Ultra are annoyingly LOUD compared to the X800 line. Me personally, since I have both, would stay with the X800 since my 6800GT up and died after two months of service. No warning signs, just blank video while using Visio and listening to Winamp.

My dad's computer has a Leadtek 6800GT and it is very quiet. His entire PC was designed with quiet in mind and the Leadtek does very well at keeping the sound levels low.
