My main goal is to come out of this with a really nice monitor. These are the current specs on the computer I am currently using.

Intel Pentium4 2.8GHz
2x512MB PC-3200LL XMS Corsair [1024MB]
Western Digital 80GB 7,200RPM HD
Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
Gigabyte Gaming Fortissimo 7.1 Soundcard
Blue ANTEC case w/ window [Austin 450W power supply]
Abit IS7
Lite-on DVD ROM 16x
Lite-on 52x24x52x

Monitor : Samsung Syncmaster 955DF

I've had this computer since the summer of 2003 and remember spending around $1400.00

Its been running really great ever since, currently handling games really well such as Half-Life 2, Doom 3, World of Warcraft, Counter-strike : source.

Now this is what I "FEEL" like doing, although I need a lot of direction.

Im looking to re-arrange my room in a way where I'm getting rid of the TV, re-arranging the furniture so I have a corner desk where I have my computer set up, and room to do my college work on. NOW, i became really interested in purchasing a new monitor when i saw my uncles DELL 2001FP LCD monitor..it looks utterly AMAZING..

THE QUESTION [if you feel like passing through all the useless stuff]
I am looking to purchase a monitor that I can watch DVD's on, and play games where it looks really NICE [prefirabbly LCD].. and maybe watch TV and play my consol games [gamecube, xbox] on, not sure if that's possible. I'm not sure if it would be wastefull to go all out and purchase a 30'' LCD screen from dell or another company for that matter. Or if I am looking to purcahse a monitor for television, dvd, gaming purposes, would it make sense for me to go all out in purchasing a new computer system, or would my current specs be able to handle what I'm looking to do.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long read.

I was also looking at this monitor with an amazing 12ms response time
DELL 2005FPW

The home media center monitor included with this computer, I'm not sure if this is also something I'm looking for that would completly satisfy my needs based upon what I want it to do and performance wise.
MONITOR

i have a 2005FPW and its great. it has some backlighting probs and i found one dead pixel but its so small you cant notice it...the one i got isnt perfect but i honestly never notice the backlighting problem. im just too concentrated on owning up CSS :) ghosting is not an issue for me either. the 60hz makes it 'feel' a little different than my olc CRT that i had at 75 or something but im getting used to the new one. since you said you wanted to watch movies on it the 2005FPW would be better obviously. id say get a PC LCD...not an LCD tv. that is unless you like running at 1280x768 as your max res =/ id say get a 2005FPW or a vp201b or something along those lines. and if you can afford it a 23" would be a better choice still. apple, sony, samsung, and hp (though the hps seem to have a lot of problems as ive seen in many user reviews on forums and internet sites all over teh place) make 23" and 24" widescreen LCDs.

Is it possible to somehow be able to hook up my consol systems such as Gamecube and X-box up to my monitor where I would be able to play em on the Dell 2005FPW, or any other monitor that someone may suggest to me that would be for what im looking for..

2005FPW has composite and s-video inputs in addition to vga/dvi. im in the process of getting my setup going so that i can use my screen to watch cable tv on.

Nice, what about watching cable TV, does it matter what video card you have in terms of compatibility..

if your cable box has a s-video out, you can watch tv on it but your going to need a source for sound.

well, im using the coaxial cable from the wall and hooking it into this cheap vcr and then im using the vcr to convert it over to composite video. im gonna get this really cheap old stereo w/ l/r audio inputs for sound and just use that because the screen doesn't have the right connectors (for sound) and this is the easiest way to do it i think b/c the VCR only has RCA audio outputs because its cheap. i never even touch the video card with the cable TV.

Hmm, will doing that destroy the quality.. and it sucks I won't be able to use my Logitech speakers for sound.. and say I wanted to play gamecube on the monitor, how would that also be possible if theres no source for sound on the monitor..

well obviously its not going to be videophile grade but i tested it and it looked fine w/ a little family guy the other night ;) i dont watch much TV but im pretty sure itll be fine for my purposes. you could just directly hook the gcube in w/ the composite and as for sound, im sure there are converter boxes or cables that'll convert it into a 1/8" headphone jack or something. try radio shack? :D i also have logitech speakers so if you used a cheap stereo like im trying to do, you could use its headphone output and plug that into your speakers.

No they didn't, and also is there a universal adapter that would be able to hook up cable tv and audio connections into it so they can be displayed on my monitor. Also be able to hook up consol systems such as Gamecube, x-box and stuff like that, or when you deal with systems like that.. do you need individual connectors..

Here's an example for x-box [ http://x2vga.com/ ]

If you want the best quality you'll need a component transcoder. Search ebay for "component converter" or "component transcoder". There are lot's of options. This one here is a clone or OEM of the Key Digital one I use: ebay.

I've only played Xbox a little bit with this setup on my 2005FPW (and a lot on my older LCD), but what I've seen so far looks quite good. Not as good as a dedicated scaler, but at least you don't have to go through a crap deinterlacer for 480p games. Of course 720p titles like X-Men Legends look especially sharp.
