This game...I'm really lost for words...WOW! What a way to show off the recent goodness of these last generation video cards. Doom 3....is now ...irrelevant.

I must agree, Doom 3 does not even come close. I have played it for only an hour tonight (worked late) and I am allready convinced that this is without a doubt, a masterpiece.

well...the way I see it...Doom3 was supposed to be dark and scary...and have great graphics...and it did that successfully...but I must admit...HL2 is definitely my favorite of the two...

Half Life 2 has great graphics but I heard its way too easy when compared to the original HL.
I have not played HL, but only counterstrike/Day of Defeat. I am planning on buying HL2 soon...

But anyway is it challenging or not?

/me points to the General Gaming forum.

Aside from that, I'm on Chapter 10 / 15 and it is a masterpiece ;)

It's gotta be the most incredible game I've ever played. And yes.. I played Doom 3 also.

both are UNIQUE games

they are different, you can't comapre them

I had FUN in DOOM3

and i'm having FUN in HL2

and that's what matters

HL2 is crisp, realistic, physics are awesome

it's only easy because i put it on normal.. there is a hard option too :)

Brent, you're allowed to have a favorite you know...nobody will be mad at you if you like HL2 better...;)

Personally, I thought Doom3 was impressive...and I think HL2 is equally as impressive...HL2 is just more my kind of game...I can honestly say that it was worth the wait...if it wasn't for the gay ATi logos on EVERYTHING...it'd be perfect...;)

*edit* I mean seriously...I'm looking at my Doom3 box and cds...and I don't see any nvidia logos all over them...wtf...

I got BORED in doom3 after a little over half way.

yes, indeed this game rocks all FPS the last decade...nothing comes close, not even the original..

I started this game out on hard mode, I am almost out of the zombie town now...

how do you find out what chapter your on? ima go press the start new game and see.../shrug

later all, happy gaming

I must admit as well im a Hardcore gamer and Half Life 2 takes the cake. What a gorgeous game!!!!!!! The best graphics ever.

Running it on my 6800 GT OC with a BenQ 23 inch 16 ms LCD in 16:10 Widescreen. Running smooth as butter. All I can say is I am HARD!!

After playing HL2 and D3, I'm convinced I need a new video card. This aging 9500 is just not cutting it :( Well.. here I come BFG 6800 OC :)

didn't u softmod it to a 9700pro? i would've thought it would do ok @ 1024x960 max settings..?

hell, i think that HL2 is stellar and i run it on a [email protected] with a radeon 8500LE at Pro speeds, still get hitcing but this game looks SICK!
1024*768 all textures on high and low for water.

HL2 cheats a lot with the lighting and shadows unlike Doom 3. You can shoot a light and the bullet will go right through. HL2 looks real nice but Doom 3 has more advanced graphics. However, when it comes to gameplay and the story, Doom 3 is light years behind. It's the best PC game i've ever played for sure. :D

i agree doom3 has a bit more advance graphics.... mostly the floor textures..etc,.. but the face expression in hl2 and character models RULEZ!!! but everything else about hl2 IMO is better than doom3.... ESPECIALLY gameplay :)

SHAMPOO IS BETTER THAN CONIDITIONER

Seriously, you might as well compare those two when you compare HL2 and Doom 3.

HL2 is one of the best games I have ever played.

Far Cry still had the best looking enviroments ( world) of this year

Doom 3 had the best lighting effects

half life 2 has the best looking faces and physics.

they all have their moments.

now to find a game that has all 3... maybe Stalker : Chernobyl?

iam sure we will see all 3 in 2005 somtime.

this game is so damn amazing, i dont even have it yet and it is already my favorite game ever, ive only watched my friend play it, the physics in the game are unbelievible, and every thing in the game has mass,
"eg: depending on how hard u throw somthing like a tv through a window, if u throw it to lite it will bounce off the glass, but if u throw it hard enough you sure to see FOX fly, same technique can be used towards oponents.
all i can say is DAMN PAYCHECK< WHY ARENT U HERE ALREADY!
Best FPS of all time.

I MAKE THE HAIR SILKY SMOOTH!! :D Heh, Billy Madison kicks my ass.

On a serious note, HL2 has graphics that just appeal to me - as compared to Far Cry and D3. Everything just looks so fucking good I could eat it up, and guess what there is gameplay! WHOA!

I don´t know, I´m a little disappointed while playing HL2. I don´t know if its because I´m still using my old video card, but I´ve had more intense gameplay (also visual one at the same settings everything max @ 1024 no aa/af) with Far Cry and Doom3. It´s like I can´t get into the whole vibe of HL2, I´m playing and like WTF is going on, they literally didn´t "teleport" me into the game. lol

I do like the physics and item interactivity, but the gameplay and AI is somewhat too lineral. The AI in Far Cry was better and surprised me by flanking me and scarying the shit out of me and while D3 didn´t have any AI, it made me jump many times and pulled me much better into the whole game. Shit I was shaking and thinking I´m getting a heart attack at times. :D

The HL2 graphics engine is somewhat disappointing too (on my old Ti4200, maybe it will look much better on my new video card), you can see how long they were developing it. If they had released it last year before Far Cry and Doom3, yes then it had been top notch, but now it looks like an updated HL engine with hi-res textures, which don´t look very high-res at time (the boat textures when you sit in it).

It does run smooth, if there wasn´t these sound hi-cups (sounds like a major bug, both ATI and NV users seem to report them). I think the sound precache is too small or something and yes, stupid Steam is a memory hug too. I´m certainly a Steam hater, sorry but for this crap alone people should actually download that game off BT and kick Valves ass. What kind of pain in the ass it was to install this game off my DVD! (It was released on DVD only in Europe) I definitly can´t wait until some cracker ground releases a hack where you can get rid of Steam. The only good thing about Steam is that it auto updates HL2, but I still prefer downloadable patches. Steam should be able to be turned off AFTER authorizing but no it seems to be inbedded into the HL2 code?

Anyway, I´m currently just at the boat level with the 2 ship wrecks and 2 rocket launching tanks. There are some kind of ramps where I have to jump, but I have no idea how I can reach them. So I assume I´m rather early in the game (first 20%?), but I hope the rest will be much better.

My 2 cents.

Sure he can but I think Brent needs to keep a lid on his personnal preferences based on his position at the [H]. It's like being a responsible member of the media. Just the facts without convoluting them with personnal agenda.

IMO he does this well.

Not much a friend if only let you watch, you need to penny-arcade his 455 and take his place.

Everybody knows conditioner is inferior to shampoo (b/c it goes on first and cleans the hair!!!); conditioner would be nothing without shampoo...ask the penguin (It's too damn hot for a penguin to be just walkin' around. I gotta send you back to the South Pole!)

I played for about an hour last night and I'm impressed. The graphics and sound are both great. The enemies are tough. The atmosphere has sucked me in. They really did a great job of putting you into Gordon's shoes and dropping you into a creepy, alien controlled ghetto. Fantastic game for the brief time I've played it.

Stop looking at me Swan!

I love this game btw

I liked the very beginning the best so far. After you get off the train. Do I really need to put a spoiler warning here?

The whole "big brother" thing going on. Did anyone mess with the guard that is herding you to the other side? I pissed him off and he went back to his area, then he ran all the way across the floor to tolchok me some more with his stick.

I would have paid another 50 bucks just to have a looong immersive beginning where you are just creeping around the city, getting more information from people and whatnot. Like an adventure game. Guess I'm getting old... :p

And to be fair, people said D3 was a tech demo and all.....common. All those barrels? Can you say physics demo? :D

heyyyy, watch it, im "his friend" and he can ask me anytime he wants if he can play and he can, but what he didnt tell you is, that he didnt want to play for the fact that he wanted to watch just a bit so he doesnt ruin the expierence......make sence? :D

yea "ati9700pro" is right.
i got the game now, and like i said.... "ITS DAMN AMAZING"

Technically, it's really good. From a game design perspective, I'm finding some serious flaws that I'm having a problem with. There are some great sections that I'm having fun with, but then there are parts that I feel like I'm at the arcade playing some rail shooter.

**** SPOILER WARNING *****

Worst moment so far (I'm 60% done) is that god-awful helicopter show-down scene. Supply crates everywhere, large open space... Gee, you think that something big is coming? Totally telegraphed and played like a Konami shooter. Bad, bad, bad.

**SPOILER**

..I too am really enjoying this game and going thru it a second time ..knowing the ending now tho gives the whole game a darker meloncholy(if thats the right word) type feel to it.

I've only had it for about a day but so far I'm really liking it!

The gfx are easily on par with D3 IMO. But the occasional stuttering, and the mid level load-points are kind of a downer... seems like whenever I really start to get into the swing of things I hit a load point, which abruptly reminds me that I'm sitting at my pc playing a game instead of runing around shooting alien baddies. Kind of weakens the overall feel IMO.

But the great voice acting, great physics engine, and great gfx have made this a really fun experience so far.

*teeny tiny spoiler*

the boat chase with the spam happy helicopter absolutely rawked :D

I have to agree with karl76 on this one. Graphics and physics are the best to date (6800 ultra on A64 3200+, 1GB ram), but AI seems to be lacking. I finished on hard, playing 2nd time on hard again to try "testing" the AI. Planning on not using any savepoints except the autosaves. After the stellar HL1 intro, I was disappointed in the HL2 intro. Felt like I was dumped into the middle of something and never really told what I was supposed to do. Who are the combine? where did they come from?

This game is also way too linear. There aren't many ways to approach a problem, like there was in FarCry. There were very few places in the entire game that I tried a different strategy, otherwise its just run and gun. Maybe thats just because it was mostly inside. FarCry had the advantage of being outdoors w/ room to allow multiple paths to an area, but even its indoors areas had some of that.

At first I was impressed by the item interaction, grabbing things and moving/throwing them. Then I found I couldnt shoot out the lights... Also disappointed there was no leaning around corners.

Flaws in physics: If you pick up an item, its "weight" disappears, it does not get added to your own. i.e. stand on a see-saw with a cement block on your end of the see-saw. Pick up the block, and the see-saw tips to the other side. Also, the "items" hanging from ropes/wires do not accurately lose their momentum when hit by a large explosion, they bounce all over the place.

Overall its a fun game to shoot through, but not much thinking involved.

HL2 = Game of the Year, IMO.

Theres people out there that say you can't compare doom 3 and far cry to hl2... and my question is Why the hell not?! All three of them are single player frist person shooters... all the same type of game. I think its only fair to compare them, Just because HL2 stomps both of them without effort, doesn't mean you can't compare them. Half Life raised the bar for FPS games of the future, and Half Life 2 has reachived that same goal, and raised the bar even higher. Its by far the best game in its genre, ever.

This thread is so 10 days ago... Who didn't beat the game with in two days? ;)

Totally agree here... After playing Far Cry, I really feel like this should become a staple mechanic in all FPS to come.
