Just want to see what type of UPS you have along with if you have one at all.

I have a 800va APC & a 500va APC.

I've got my workstation on a 650 VA MGE UPS. The network equipment and other stuff is on a 1000 VA Sweex UPS.

APC Back-ups ES 500 but I need a 1KVA or better. my system is too big for this lil thing :/

I would never run an expensive system without an APC supporting it, that would be quite stupid, it would be something only a guy or a ditz would do :p :D

Liebert UPStation GXT ($1200) here. Runs 2 comps + 2 19in monitors flawlessly.

I use my APC 650 for my network gear because we seem to get brown outs just strong enough to shut them down but not the PCs. SInce I implemented the UPS I don't have to renew IP's or reboot my systems anymore.

2 APC units:

Smart UPS 1400 for PC
Backups 1100 for everythig else

Ive got 1 smart ups 1k (2u rackmounted) in the rack next to my desk(powering systems 1 and 2), one smart ups 1k as a footrest (and to power my 3rd system and some accessorys). Ive got a 3rd back-ups 400 i found on my alarm clock. The power in the dorms tends to go out often, and unfortunately the little battery in the clock only remembers the time.. it wont make the alarm go off.

At home i've got a smart ups 900 on the switch+freebsd router/firewall and then a few more back-ups 400 units on my parents comuter as well as my brothers and sisters.

I have a 750, 500, 420 APC and an old 300 Minuteman.

You don't realize how bad you need one until you get one and can check the log and see how "dirty" the electricity can get.

I have one on my network gear. It logs a lot of power problems, but none of the unprotected machines have problems.... so blah. whatever.

I don't have one, but i'm wondering how do I know how much power I need?

Calculated for buth my P4 and XP-M systems and determined that 380va was sufficient to give me 5-10 minutes to save work and shut down normally or, if unintended, to rely on software to automatically save work and shutdown.

That is for 1 monitor and 2 systems connected as a lan and using a kvm switch.

222va for 1 system + monitor.

What do you guys think about draining the battery periodically to prolong life? Is it necessary or no?

ohhhh that coupon still works! I just might do that....

You might see if someone you live with wants one too and you can split the shipping cost since it only goes up like $5 for a second one.

sounds like a horrible idea to me

A 500 on my main box and a litle 350 on my Shuttle across the room.

2x 2000VA APC's with external batteries at work running get this a p2-350 system. Thats what the IT guy gave me when I started.

At home I have 1 belkin 500 and 1 APC 500.

now the best question is of those people who dont have one how many time have you needed to replace bad hardware like hard drives & power supplys. I cant rember having to replace any part in any of my PC & i live in FL & an old house build in 1930 hell when my AC turns on all the light in my house flicker & same goes when my gf vacummes, i always hear my ups going off (the beeping sound).

I've never actually had any equipment fried by a power outage (knock on wood) but I've lost what I was working on when the lights went out. :(

Having a UPS is peace of mind because it gives me a chance to save stuff if/when the power goes out, which happens. And we live in an older house as well, with crappy electrical.

I worked at Office Max back in the day, i was doing a store-wide price audit for the 1st time in like a year and I can across a treasure. 2 of them actually. they had 2 $210/each UPS's in inventory that were discontinued. They had been priced at original price for that long and who the f*ck buys UPS's at OMAX?
anyway, i scanned em and they came up at $9/each...
one for myself and one made a dope x-mas present!
if this had not happened, i would not bother woning one.

I believe it's a apc 650vac powering the fileserver with my precious 160gb of disk space. :)

I have an APC back up 725 ES ....I got it on sale for $59.00 from Dell with FREE shipping :)

1200VA Belkin Universal UPS (no longer made)

I've been really happy with this UPS. I recently replaced the 2 batteries in it sicne the old ones were only holding about 50% charge after 3 years of use. Man what a pain to change. APC units are way easier to do. But, back when I got this UPS it was one only reasonably priced one that had a USB connection for management of the unit, and also had RJ-11/RJ-45 connections on it (phone/ethernet)

This thing has saved my ass so many times I can't count. We get constant brown outs here in Tucson during the summer months and my UPS is constantly having to pull more current from the wall in order to compensate (it has line regulation). We also get those fun 1 sec power dips where the power doesn't actually go out, but it's enough to force your computer to reboot if theres no UPS to hold it up.

APC BackUPS Pro 1100, here. It ran my system for about 15 minutes after a hurricane took down the power, with a NEC 21'' CRT monitor. I like it. :)

ive lost count of how much hardware ive had to replace due to power issues, lightning strikes and other crap on unprotected pc's...

at my aunt's house her pc had a ups (i gave her one of those little 350va powerstrip UPS's from APC) and her house got struck by lightning, the APC literally melted, but we plugged in her pc and monitor, and all was well... :D

i swear by my APC's

I have all my machines on APC UPS's they are great for my area in the summer with all the storms that roll through. While I like APC I have used other brands with great success. Anything is better then nothing.

That is a ton of UPS

From spending many months in florida though, i know how sucky the power can be there during storms and such :(

I have 0 right now (should get some, but money has not been budgeted towards that :p ). Plus our area rarely gets outages.
