my system is an msi neo plat / 3200 64 / gainward 6800 GT / 10,000rpm sata drive / antec quiet case

the only problem is, it aint so quiet. what are some budget options for silencing it?

so far i have come up with.. silent case fans (whats the best brand?), NV Silencer 5 for the 6800 (right?).. what else can i do? the antec case supply should be quiet.. is there anything else making a racket?

ta :)

I'd check to see what you have cooling your AMD 64. I use a Zalman 7000ALCU with that board and its fairly quiet on full power, with good cooling. Its even quieter if you let it use the smart fan thing, only spinning fast when the CPU gets load. You will however have to remove the current HSF mounting and backplate to install the Zalman. This requires hairdrieing the back of the mobo and pulling off the backplate. This procedure is really not that bad, but you will have to pull(unscrew and remove) the mobo which is a pain.

Well, just offhand, besides the stock AMD cooler, which is very loud, the 6800GT probably has a HSF which is none-too-quiet, and the 10,000 RPM drive is also probably none-too-quiet as well.

Sometimes there's a payoff for getting the latest equipment, and decent, cheap cooling is going to be loud. Check out Newegg, Arctic cooling has an NV Silencer for about $30, the Zalman 7000 previously mentioned is about $41. The stock fans that come with the Antec case are probably quiet enough. I'd focus on the video card and stock HSF for the CPU.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Indeed the gainward fans are very loud.. you can OC to 400 out the box after all. I'm looking at the NV silencer, but sadly I'd have to cut up my gainward card as it takes up 2 slots.

Bought the zalman cooler.. now I've got to take my bloody computer apart to fit it.]

Damn :(

PS at least the panaflos were a sinch to fit :)
