I heard creative was releasing some 7.1 headphones with mic aimed at gamers. Friend said he saw them being promoted at WCG, any else hear about these or have links to info on any? Heard they were coming out sometime this year. Thanks.

thats bull shit. head phones have 2 channels, I hate things that try to make it seem like surround sound. If you fucking want surround sound go buy 7.1 speakers! (I'm not talking to you gamerdrew, but people in general)

I agree, its just at lan parties and what not, speakers pose major problems, but everyone still wants directional sound, so the only option is surround sound headhpones.

Not really. I find that a good pair of stereo headphones provide excellent directional sound. This is, of course, assuming that the game in question supports DirectSound3d or some other 3d sound api.

Ya, its a "known secret" that headphones provide excellent surround. I call it a "known secret" because it still amazes me to this day that many still don't know it.

Most of those 5.1 headphones are glorified garbage imho, a marketing gimmick that utilizes low quality speakers. Compare them to a decent set of Senns and you'll see (hear) what i mean.

plz pardon the rant ;)

yes thats prob true, i was hopping for info becuase maybe these will break the tradition and be really good.

sennheiser hd497, hd580; sony mdr7509 > klipsch promedia 4.1
but my only proof is experience :(

I wouldn't count on it. Rather than gamble on something that will probably be crap, do a little research into some quality stereo headphones. They probably have better 3d sound positioning than these shoddy surround headphones anyway.

Any decent stereo headphone with 3d positioning algorithms will often give you a better 3d sound stage than any "multichannel" headphone (obviously) and most surround sound speaker systems.

Any recommendations then?

Oh my fucking god. Let me guess: the rear channels will be "simulated" in the sides? What the fuck is even the point? Someone needs to just come out with some infinity.1(gotta have the subwoofer in the headphones!) headphones and get all this over with.

Let me just clarify a bit what emorphien was saying(at least I think I know what he is saying). The stereo headphones themselves don't have the 3d positioning algorithms; the 3d information is computed before being sent to the headphones. That was probably clear to everyone else but I was a bit confused. Anyway, look around this forum for some recommendations for good headphones(it seems to come up every few days).

Hehe, woops good point... i could have worded that better

obviously the headphone doesn't have any "algorithm" built in :p but the processing in your computer will simulate the way we hear 3d sound and a decent pair of stereo headphones will reproduce it well.

I don't know what all brands people are hot to suggest for this since I haven't listened around for a while and the most extensive listening I do to music is on a pair of Grado SR325s. I game on them too and they're great, but I guess that's a matter of preference and the fact I don't have any great alternatives at the moment. Many people seem to recommend senns (just one example) over grados for gaming, but meh... i don't game a lot.

Please don't purchase "surround sound" headphones.

Especially if they are from Zalman. I spent $50 and could only bear to use them for 15 minutes. My $30 Koss headphones sounded better.

I am the friend in question. Creative had just plain ol regular looking headphones and I, looking for some good gaming headphones with little success for quite some time, was skeptical. Put them on and I did indeed get a multichannel effect. Plus a mic and I believe noise cancelation. Guy said they were simulated (sms?), not multichannel which doesn't seem to work anyways. Due out in November and I can't wait.

I bought some seinheiser a long time ago that were analogy, the hd497s. Beautiful music, horrible games.

If anyone has any suggestions in case the creative ones turn out to be crap (for example the mic sucks or I find something better) this headphone dilema is one that threatens never to get solved.

If they are simulated instead of multichannel, what makes them 7.1?

Absolutely nothing. He's crazy, crazy I tell you. :) Joking. I probably said something to the effect of "surround sound headphones" since they do attempt to emulate the multichannels.

What do you mean by analogy?
Are you sure you have the headphones model right? I found them to be quite good for games.

Yep just double checked the model. They seem to blur sound together, So if its coming from the left, boom left goes off. Doesn't really simulate the sound's direction, which, I I was under the impression, was what analogs do. I could be wrong? If I hadn't stayed up for 48 hours I'd research it and not sound quite so ignorant atm but oh well.

Ok pretty much every headphone is stereo. The hd497 does have simulated surround it is just much much more subtle since they are obviously not meant for gaming. THe mid tones tend to resonate, the high tones tend not to be sharp, resulting in a kind of blending effect that makes directional sound a bit more subliminal. I found when I closed my eyes I could tell which direction it was shots were coming from though so meh. Spose I should just buy a good mic now, any suggestions?

I really don't understand how you are using the term analog.

If I remember right, I found them to be a great advantage in FPS like Return to Castle Wolfenstein. But the front/back positioning wasn't all that great. Of course it has been a year since I used them, but I know I liked them for gaming.

I am trying to clear up a misconception I may be having and having slept in 40 hours so forgive my rambling. Analog and Digital, the two different types of speakers, no?

Zach

Yeah, the front/back positioning is weak at best but it does work. I turned up effects and set my tinkered with my audigy 2 to some effect. I still am not sure whether I want to dish out the money for some new ones. The hd497s are incredible for music and I don't know if Im just imagining things on the gaming side of thigns. Im going to bed.

No such thing as digital speakers. Sound is analog. Speakers produce sound. Therefore, speakers must be analog. Though I suppose an old morse key could be considered a digital speaker.

there's one kind of speakers. analog. The signal that reaches the driver had better be analog.

Good stereo headphones on a computer using decent surround emulation will sound better than 5.1/7.1 headphones because it's easier to effectively trick the brain in to thinking a sound is in front of or behind us than it is to make 5.1 headphones that are worth a damn. apparently.
