The Cisco 1534 Hub is something I have just for having a smart hub to see what it can do. I'm trying to learn it all ;-)

Once I finish wiring the whole house I'll post a new diagram with the new information and maybe pics if I have a camera :-/

sry, didn't know there was a differance.

Big difference. Pretty much say Switches own hubs, routers own switches and layer 3 switches own all.

Enough gabber, more pics!

Mmm.... Pics....

Yes, yes. I know. Replace the damned hub. I'm working on it okay! :)

or just put the switch where the hub is now...and put the hub where the switch is....that would work...have most of your network all up on the switch, and then have the 3 machines hooked to the hub and the hub to the switch

Simguy, what OSs are your servers and workstations running? What is your router "Defender" running? How is the Symantec firewall appliance?

Thanx

Draconius: My main systems (Merlin, Corona & Nautilus) are always transferring files between them. The network is pretty active on that end, hence why I have the switch there (versus the hub which loves to induce collisions).

All 3 of those machines have Gigabit NIC's, so I'm just going to grab one of the Dell PowerConnect 2624 unmanaged switches and stick it in place of the SMC.

As for the rest of the network, I'm looking at replacing the D-Link with a pair of Dell PowerConnect 2024 unmanaged switches to at least get better switching throughput (the D-Link is weak) and eliminate the collision problem. :)

Finally, to help increase switching performance for the IBM Server Cluster, I'll branch off the new PowerConnect 2024's with the SMC and plug both servers in to that.

Private Citizen: Kinda goes like this:

All Workstations & 1 Laptop all run Windows XP Pro.
Other Laptop runs Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.
IBM Server Cluster runs Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
Defender used to run Slackware, but last night I converted it over to Freesco for NAT & DHCP.

The Symantec SGS is actually not a bad piece of hardware at all. Pricey, but for integrated IPSec VPN (helpful when I'm on the road), firewall, content filtering, anti-virus, spam-filtering, intrusion detection and automatic updates, its' worth it. :)

Kinda like the Ronco Rotisserie Oven: Set it & Forget it :)

I kinda hate to ask this but: KRiTiKuL FX and SimGuy what did you guys use to make your diagrams, some of the pictures in them looked similar, not sure if you used to same program or not. Possibly photoshop, something else?

Well I'm not Simguy or KRiTKuL FX but...
They are using a program called Micosoft Visio.
Here is a link, I think there is a free trial.

HOLY

Can I ask who makes those...and what you are using them for?

nortel networks, we have been revamping our wrlwide infrastructure from the bottom up.
those are passport 8300s, poe across the backplane; distribution chassis.

eventually they might do routing, but the PP8600s are great in the core.

the 8692 switch fabric CPUs just got released, w/ 256Gbit/s backplane capacity.

256 * ( 2 cpus per chassis ) * (2 chassis in a IST/SMLT core) = 1Tbit/s :)

they arent centered perfectly on top of each other! you have to do that for performance sake! :p

I just got done with a project at work... replacing our aging NT4 servers! and I just got a new Canon PowerShot A85 that I need to break in. ;)

Anyway, the old.... 3 Pentium 3 733's with 512 MB RAM, running NT4, and a Pentium 2, w/ 256 running NT4.

The new: 3 Dell PowerEdge 1750's with Dual 2.8 GHz P4's w/ HT, 2 GB RAM, 3x36 GB Raid 5, redundant Power Supplies.

1 Dell PowerVault 770, with Dual 2.8 GHz P4's w/ HT, 2 GB RAM, 6x146 GB Raid 5, redundant Power Supplies.

They are running Win2k3 Server which is making my job role of B.O.F.H. even easier.

What is that box on the top of the rack with the LCD? What does it do? Thanks!

Exabyte AutoPak VXA-2 Backup system.... it's a VXA-2 drive, and the loader holds 10 tapes. Each tape holds up to 160 GB at 2:1 compression. It's pretty nice. :)

Here's a Visio design of my home network. Hopefully it will be changing soon. I want to split it into 2 networks with 2 routers. Not sure which ones. I'm happy with the Linksys BEFSX41 Router with VPN/Firewall. I do have a smoothwall firewall but just for practice. Any comments are well appreciated. Thanks.

The photoshop job was almost perfect. Only problem is the odd shade of gray patchs around the labeling on the side. Beyond that I am not seeing to much to hint the picture is fake.

Finally got a digital camera :).
