The WoW beta servers are located in Virgina, which as most people know, has recently been hit by Ivan this past weekend. It appears that the damage in Virgina was pretty great, seeing as the building where the WoW beta servers are/were held got hit by a tornado....

Emergency Update: Servers Drying Out - Block on 09/19/04
Enough electrical power is now available at the datacenter for us to analyze the extent of any damage that might have occurred as a result of the direct tornado hit Friday night, but the hardware is not yet dry enough to be powered up. The good news is that there's a possibility that we will be able to begin carefully powering up and testing the hardware late this evening. Our on-site team of network engineers is working around the clock on the situation, and we will be posting another update here for everyone tomorrow afternoon. The pictures linked to below give a general impression of the damage sustained by the building housing our servers.
The US World of Warcraft beta test will remain offline for the remainder of Sunday and into Monday, and possibly longer. As soon as we have an estimate on when we will be able to restore service, we'll share that information here. Our thanks go out again for your continued patience and support.

Emergency Update: Work Progresses on Restoring Servers - Block on 09/20/04
Blizzard network engineers are currently testing server hardware for any indications of damage. We hope to have a thorough test completed within the next 24 hours and by then provide a more extensive update of when we can bring the servers back online. Initial reports indicate that all vital data is still intact, meaning players should be able to pick up where they left off.
Players will be able to receive rest bonuses for the time that their characters have spent offline. However, auctions will have expired by the time servers are brought back online. Thanks for your patience and concern for World of Warcraft through this challenging time!

Poor poor Blizzard network techs. I'm glad I'm not one of them there. :)

You should see how the closed beta testers are taking it :D Some of them seriously need to get a life.

That's why I've given up on mmorpg's, I can't stand the asshats anymore.

I'm pretty impressed the way Blizzard is handeling this. I think it'd be a funny phone call to get though 'Uh, yeah, hi. We need you to fly down to Virgina with the rest of the tech team this weekened. We're not sure for how long though. You see, a tornado hit our servers, and we need you to fix it. Thanks alot, your plane leaves tommorow 6am.'

Looks like Sony bombed the building

Lol. A little corporate espionage, eh?

Agreed. I was part of the stress test beta, and I was asking where this one town was. It was my first day playing, so I was a complete newb.My starting down was the town I was looking for, but, I didn't know that at the time. And this one guy shouts obsenities at me like 'OMG, you fucking newb' with another guy responding 'OMG, you so pwned him'. I don't understand why people feel the need to act like that, but whatever. I hope it's just the fact that it was a free game, and the people wont be willing to pay the money to play the game.

the cool thing about WoW is the chat system...if too many wankers are in the general channel acting dumb, just mute the channel, or ignore the individuals.

That sucks. I tried to help people as best I could while I was playing. Mainly just hoping a GM would see my generousity :)

I agree for the most part.. There are some real !!!!!!!!s that played. Some people brought up a good point though. The people that treated you that way are probably the HS kids and younger (majority). For the most part they are the same people that won't be playing in Retail due to financial reasoning etc.

I don't know if it's been because I've been lucky or what but I have yet to play a MMORPG that has made me want to quit due to peoples attitudes.. Oh yeah you get the occasional lajsdlkjfa that you want to PK etc but 90% of the people I encounter are curtious and helpful. Just my experience at least.. I know luck may defer. Oh yeah I did the same thing too rofl.. I asked to find out where a location was but I walked like 20 steps and it said I entered the town rofl.. So you're not the only one bro :)

For those who may question what MMORPG's I have played (just incase) I've played DAOC 1 month, Anarchy online 1.5 months, WoW stress test (lvl 22 tauren druid) 1.5 weeks, SWG TKM/MPistoleer mastered 22 professions.. some 2x for 9 months, EQ for like 1 hour rofl, ac2 for 1 yr, and i tried out a few trials on others.

During the stress test I had one major lkajlkjads mess with me. I loved fishing In WoW and I was fishing in Booty Bay because i had 200+ skill in fishing (stress test). Well this human lvl 14 jumps into the water and puts his body over my bobber. I keep trying to fish but he keeps following me around and blocks my bobber.. I can't talk to the guy to pelase ask him stop so I keep pointing at him and growling etc to show he was upsettting me.. instead of taking a hint this immature moron just keeps at it.. got to the point I had to keep running from side to side of the dock to fish... so yes I know what you mean.. I just think the majority of the time it's fine.. it's like putting up w/ base campers in FPS's.. tanks inside the airfield building in bf1942 and so on..

It's just something we have to (but shouldn't) have to get used to in any game you play.. except single player games :)
