i have an Ati 9700 128MB made by hercules running on a P4 2,53 512 ram

considering that i'm not willing to upgrade my PC at the moment .
Is it worth giving 500+ $ for an Ati XT800 Pro or it will be limited by my cpu
and i should better get an 9800 Pro that i can get with only 150 $ ?

On the other hand is it worth upgrading from a Hercules 9700 128MB to an 9800 Pro ?
or the practical difference in frames/second in games will be so small that such
an upgrade isn't worth even for 150 $ ?

Please help me decide ....

i went from a 9700pro to a x800pro 16 pipe and it was like night and day, not sure about ur cpu but i bet ull be well happy with the x800 regardless

so you say i should go directly for the x800pro and not to a "cheap" solution of an 9800pro.

the cpu you had before and after the x800pro was the same ? which cpu/memory do
you use ?

thanks

No no, $500+ for an X800 Pro is ridiculous (they're $400 MSRP).

Anyway, a 9700 Pro -> 9800 Pro would probably not net you a big return, probably a small improvement.

You have a 2.53 Ghz CPU (133 Mhz FSB I assume) so I'd probably say your CPU would hold back the X800 Pro.

I think you should hold off until you can buy new cards for at least retail price, unless you're desparate.

i live in europe and unfortunately an x800pro here costs about 500$ :(

my cpu is 2,53 512 ram dual channel 266 Mhz . (intel Granite Bay chipset).

I would go out and spend the extra dough and get a X800pro. Your cpu is going to be a bottleneck, however every processor is a bottleneck to some degree. The X800pro will enable you to turn all the eye candy on and still get very playable framerates. Unless you play your games at 1024-768. For $500 hundred dollars I would make sure you get a X800pro ViVO! then you can perform the simple softmod turn into an XT PE and really see a bottleneck! Oh, by the way throw another stick of 512 in your cpu, that should help!

i prefer to play in 1280x1024 . Do you think that +512 ram (so that i will have a total
of 1 GB) will give an increase in frames/second in games ?

Of course it will, it will stop the page filing in a lot of the newer games. More ram is always better. You'll notice a lot less stuttering if you even notice any at all. It happens with every ram jump.

Yes more ram = better frames per second and better overall computer performance. 1 gig of ram is plenty for any game or most software programs out there. 2 gigs is overkill.

ok,then the best solution is to go directly for the x800 pro and get more ram.

at the moment i have 512 MB ( 2x256 ) dual channel .

should i get another pair of 256 to have a total of 1 GB or it would be better
to get 2x512 so that i have a total of 1,5 GB ?

is 1,5 GB going to give any noticable increase in games or should i get only 512
to have 1 GB total ?

Check to see what your motherboard can support. I dont think you will have a problem just adding a stick of 512 though.

my motherboard (Granite bay E7205 chipset Asus Deluxe) supports up to 4 GB of ram !!

but i don't think i need 4 GB :D
the question was if there is any noticable difference between 1 and 1,5 GB :)

also it's dual channel so the sticks have to be in pairs so i can get 2x256 or 2x512
i can't get single sticks.

Unless you have any particular gripes with nVidia's 6800 series, why not go ahead and spend $400 for a 6800GT if you're willing to spend $500 dollars on an X800Pro. The GT is widely regarded as the all around better card when comparing the two.

the cost of an 6800GT is also higher here in europe .... :(

Sorry to hear that. Overseas shipping is not an option?

i'm looking into this .... :D

maybe from ebay ,because US shops NEVER ship overseas.
also buing from canada is another option ,prices there are similar to US price
and they usualy have no problem shipping overseas.
