Intel 3.2E and SP2 issues.

Hi, I recently updated to Windows XP SP2 only to be met with constant crashing and program instability and a horrid hang when I tried to boot-up, thus I reformatted and installed XP with SP1. After doing so, my computer seemed to run fine, I found the 73C idle temp in the BIOS to be strange, but when I was in windows it ran at 57C so I was okay with that. I ran games, everything was good, 'till I tried to convert video to DivX, when all hell broke loose; in 20 seconds my processor jumped up to 80C and then over the next 30 seconds it got to 84C before crashing, has anyone else had this issue and/or know how to solve it?

I'm running a P4 Prescott 3.2E with an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, 1 GB of Corsair XMS Pro PC4000, an ATi Radeon 9700 Pro, and I have about 8 fans in my case, I also run a 500 watt PSU. I'm using an aeroflow fan on the CPU.

I really dont think Windows has anything to do with that, probably just a problem popped up in the same timeframe.

I turned off Hyper-Threading and the temp sits at 75C idle. I don't know why it's doing this, my northwood ran at around 34C idle and 45C on full load for a number of hours, but this goes nuts on heat, please, it's really bothering me to have it run this hot.

them E processors have had issues with heat... i wouldnt even try one without water cooling, only thing i can suggest it to reapply some AS5 and use AS5 not the generic junk cause the 2-3C AS5 will get you will matter bigtime

I'm using the Arctic Silver 5 Compound, that's why it's really bothering me.

Got to disagree. Sure, the PresHot's run warmer, but it's nothing as extreme as some would have you believe.

My 3.0E @ 3.2 (215 FSB) runs 45C idle, 55C after a couple of hours of Prime95 / Doom3 / etc. It's about 7-9C warmer than the Northwood I used to have, but its a long way from being "thermally unstable".

FWIW - B.B.S.

i read some where there is an issue with sp2 and prescott's...uninstall sp2 and see if it clears up and the temps come down, if they do, email microsoft there may be a patch for this that will allow you to use sp2 (I know there is one hotfix for sp2 already !)

I'd have to agree with BBS also. My Prescott 2.8 @ 3.2 idles at about 43C and loads at about 55C.

twajetmech, I have SP2 and have not had any issues with my setup. Where did you read this? Do you have a link?

I called up the computer store where I bought it and they're just going to exchange it for another one, they think it might just be a defective chip. So if that cools things down I'll let you know, and for the people who've been telling me to take out SP2, I already said that I did that, SP2 just crashed a bunch more and the only issue I have now are overheat crashes and things of that sort.

Zeph....I've seen this all over the place and on several other forums that I belong to,many people are reporting issues with sp2 and Prescott's...I think this will clarify it......

twajetmech, interesting read. I didn't have that problem when I updated to SP2 so I never searched for anything related to that. I guess I was one of the lucky few who didn't experience that.

This is interesting in that this is the exact failure mode I ran into when upgrading an older Slocket modified Slot1 BX motherboard. I thought I was hammered but was able to boot into safe mode, and use XP's "restore points" to go back to pre-SP1 status. For once, it worked as it was supposed to.....:D

Interesting read. But I have tried my 3.2 Prescott in both and AI7 and an IC7-Max3. Both used XP with SP2 slipstreamed and neither had one single problem. Is this problem specific to other brands of m/b? It does not seem to affect Abit's

actually the sp2 is a problem generator. It is architecturally designed to screw up... that's why it's created.. to screw.

nah just kiddin'

 it's not only for prescott but other system boards too. we got lots of problems with it. no... it's not a chip, it's all software related. I've seen people getting same problem with the AMD systems too. BIOS flash solved some problems on Foxconn boards.
