While reading a review of the 6600GT at hexus.net I noticed an interesting bit about the video processor.

Click Me

So will it ever work or will those of us with 6800 class cards never get to use it.

Anyone seen anything else about this?

Interesting, I've always read that it just wasn't active in drivers yet. However, seeing that a 6600 clearly has it working under released drivers puts a damper on that parade. :(

First I've heard of the 'broken' term though. I sure hope not, I was looking forward to it working someday.

I'm sure drivers and software can recover much of the bandwidth but not all of it. Whatever flaw is inherent in the hardware will be addressed but the problem is...how long will it take?

if its a hardware flaw though it may not be able to be addressed via software

interesting stuff there

Depends on the nature of the flaw I suppose.

And how much money the company wants to throw at it.

i read some reviews shoot some months ago.

I dont remeber where. But it showed the early eng samples didnt even have mpeg2 decode accel even working. But then the retail versions of 6800 worked fine.

Just tried this out on my 6800gt to find out, but playing that T2 trailer (720p version) and some wmvhd 1080p preview only showed 30-40% utilization here on the 65.76 drivers.

For some reason though it would stutter when playing in Windows media player 10 (20-30% ultilation), but playing them in media player classic was smooth as butta'.

Yeah but does it work on agp cards? The 6800GT they tested was a PCI - Express part

I just ran the T2 HD video with 65.76 installed and I get around 50% CPU utilization on average, with brief spikes of up to 60% and lows below 40%. It's very strange that Hexus got close to 100% CPU utilization with a P4 3.4GHz EE with those drivers. It could be a problem with the PCI-E support because it definitely isn't that bad on the AGP version.

Keep in mind that the leaked 65.76 driver was hacked (inf file) to make it compatible with all nvidia cards and the build might have been made without any concern for other video cards. Either way, nvidia has some 'splaining to do about why encoding/decoding still isn't enabled yet.

(the video was still playing at the end of the History graph, but it was a low motion scene)

edit: if you don't have the T2 DVD (1 DVD-18 or 2 DVD-9 set), http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx has several 1080p HDTV videos, including a T2 DVD trailer.

I'm downloading the T2 video to do a check and will post my results a soon as I am done, but the 65.76 did lower my CPU load to 8-20% under playback of an Xvid AC35.1 .avi file
with Vosub tiltles and video displayed on both monitor and TV, but I am looking forward to finding out what the T2 playback will reveal :)

i tried playing back a 1920x1080 mpeg 2 transport stream on my 6800nu and my athlon at 2.4Ghz ran between 50%-70% cpu load.

I tried playing Step Into Liquid from that Windows site and, under Media Player 10 , I get 100% CPU usage and badly stuttering playback (eVGA 6800U on 65.76).

As per below: Athlon 64 FX-51

I tried to play Debbie does Dallas, all I got was a lot of jerking.

The video played good though.

CPU speed is helpful. It's doing software decoding, so listing your video card isn't too important other than to note it's a 6800. :p

T2 1080 HDTV playback with image on both TV and monitor: 61-91% CPU load, average is laying somewhere around 75-78% CPU load...

Terra...

61.77's on the 1080p T2 with my Asus v9999ge (6800 nu with 256 ddr3 and hgher clocks) I get as follows:

60-75% cpu utilization
No stuttering whatsoever

Specs:
Athlon xp 3200+
Asus A7n8x-x (nf-2)
1 gb ocz plat. EL (3500)

I don't get why people in here are posting benchmarks if they don't have the pci-e version. This doesn't effect you if you have agp.
