I installed the new expansion pack for Neverwinter nights, Hordes of the Underdark, and when there are big battles on the screen the game slows down significantly.

Settings are all maxed out at 800x600 too.

Is it just the game or my system?

p4 3.0c
2x 120gb sata 7200rpm 8mb cache
radeon 9800 pro 128mb
sb audigy 2
1gb pc3200 ddr
windows xp pro

I don't remember what specific setting I had to reduce, but methinks it was shadows. Try isolating one graphical setting at a time and reduce it to see if you get better perfomance... If you can find what the primary slowdown is, think about whether or not you can live without it....

What driver versions are you using?

I had this problem some time back too.
But i use the game in 1280X1024 NO AA
or
1024X768 2XAA
So, your machine is stronger than mine, and i use the max settings too, i think that something must be wrong with your settings.
I know too that NWN never liked ATI cards.
Try a new set of drivers and stuff, and BTW remember to NEVER use ATItool with this game, if it doesn't crash in the beggining, the stability is completly fucked up.

My Actual Specs.

NWN eats machines for lunch! Check anandtech's results at 1280*1024 NO aa or af:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2113&p=12

X800PRO = 46.4 fps (again, 1280 NO aa or af)
X800XT = 46.4 fps
X800XT-PE = 46.4fps

So, if the X800XT-PE gets 1280 at 46 fps, how well do you think our POS 9800Pros will do. ;)

Exactly 46.4 probably, since at this res we can clearly see that the problem is not the Video card but the processor. Since in 1280 FSAA 4X we can see that even the 9700 pro gets almost 28. Probably the 9800 will do fine without AA till 1280, the real problem is processor with this game because the AI is very taxing in this game.

This a game where Nvidia hardware really smokes ATI hardware (60% more frames), and probably also the only game where there is such a great diffrence betweeen Nvidia and Ati

Yes no change from X800pro to X800XT-PE clearly points the finger at Anand's PoS cpu/memory system the board was used in.

It takes more than just a video card to run the top end games.

Simple test is to run 2-3 situations with the clocks on your video card...low/med/high.

Since I get a hefty boost between 325/325.... 380/380..... and 445/410 I can safely say my system is videocard limited and so a X800XT-PE is warranted, whereas, if there was little to no change I would be CPU/memory limited and need to address those items first.

Anyone with control over video clocks can test out to what extent they are currently CPU or videocard limited.

Blame BioWare and their shitty nVidia biased coding. NWN will FLY on even a Ti4200 while a 9800XT will seemingly barely pump out frames. Bioware have been aware of the problem for some time now...

We can blame them for having an excelent game (the best RPG ever in my opinion), with a shit code full of stupid bugs, that can hangup and freeze any machine with any configuration, right from nowhere.
But even with all these problems i still can't stop playing and loving it.

yes lets blame nvidia for having optimized openGL architecture, while we're at it let's blame ati for having D3D optimized architecture too

having this prob with dungeon siege: loa also. was getting down to 16fps with an avg of 20fps. i turned off all shadows and now get 20 with avg of 25. god, is kinda shitty.
