The Dell computer is my router/firewall, running OpenBSD 3.4.
The 4U rack server is my terminal and file server, all diskless clients mounts their NFS-roots from this computer, they also run all X11-applications on this one. It's running FreeBSD 4.9.

Where are you guys finding the money to afford these expensive rack cabinets and cases?

think about it... do you really want to know? ;)

the racks are'nt that expensive if found local around $200 here in MA for a cabinet or try ebay but shipping will kill you. relay racks are your best and cheapest bet around $99 or so

i don't have anything quite as intense as some of those networks, all i'm running is a basic wireless network for everyone in the house...

network1.jpg

this is where it all starts out: basic rca cable modem hooked up to a linksys 802.11g + 802.11b wireless router with built in 4 port switch. we originally had our first computer in the basement which is why the modem is still down there. the modem and router sit on top of our organ, next to our drums. it doubles as the dhcp server and uses 64bit wep password. our only neighbors are old people, i doubt many even have computers.

network2.jpg

this is my desktop in my room. athlon xp 2500+, 512mb ram, 80gb harddrive, dvd-rom, cd-rw, 17" crt...basic gaming machine running xp home. it works for all my needs. connects to the 802.11g signal with a linksys pci adapter.

network3.jpg

this is an old 500mhz box i got for free, but i currently have no ram for. i'm gonna use it with an old 15" crt, a dell keyboard and compaq mouse. i plan on learning linux on it and using it as a backup system. i'm going to network it with my desktop via crossover cable to share internet.

network4.jpg

this is our old gateway 550mhz p3 that's in my mom's office. 256mb ram, win98, cd-rw, another 17" crt...works for all her internet and typing needs. she shares it with my brother who uses it for the same thing; music, internet, and word processing. it connects to the 802.11b signal via a dlink pci adapter.

network5.jpg

finally, my half brother's laptop. while home from college, he lives in our basement. he gets the best signal because the router and modem are across the room from him. his dell runs win98 and connects to the 802.11g signal with a linksys pcmcia adapter.

we also have my moms old laptop that she used for work, an old 266 with a pci adapter for the 802.11b signal. it got way too slow to even run word at a decent speed, so she ended up packing it away and using the desktop. hopefully by the end of this year she's going to purchase a new laptop.

If anyone has any Ideas to get a print server connected without a PC on all the time or spending a lot that would be a big help.
Spacelord (Yeah I like Monstermagnet)

I'm also trying to obtain a server to hopefully soon. :)

If you have a HP printer you get a Deskjet card for it to plug into ethernet. But you can also get a cheap Linksys or whatever printe server that you plug the printer into via parrel or I think it allows USB also and then that plugs into a switch.

Thanks i do have a HP it's a 7260 deskjet. I looked at some of the servers and they looked to be about $100. I just thought that was high. I'll check newegg again.

Thanks

HP's high end servers, ie laserjets, colorjets, etc, have slots for jetdirect cards, and you can also buy external jetdirect boxes, but they require a server for the print queues to reside on (ie file and print server).

Here's an update on my network, just finished up terminating the Cat6 cables and half of the RG6QS cables. Damn that took forever, though I think it looks pretty good for my first time. :)

Click for bigger
Whole SMC:

Cable Closeup:

Once I find another cheap 1x8 amplified splitter (I love ebay), I'll finish terminating the RG6QS cables. After that I'll cram 2 SMC 8-port gigabit switches and my router in there. If there's room, I'll put the cable modem in, but I'm guessing it will sit on top of the SMC. Now I just have to terminate everything at the other end.

*cough* cable management *cough* ;)

How is the HP Procurve 4000M working out for ya? I had one awhile back and once I got about 20+ machines on it, I started getting these bizarre lag'/ping spikes.......

I really like the web ui on those switches tho.........
