Circuit City has the Western Digital 120GB 8MB Cache drives this week for $59.99 AR. Not a super hot deal, but $.50/GB is still a good buy.

Please note that these drives only have a one year warranty, as opposed to the three warranty that used to be offered on these drives.

Yeah, I saw that in this morning's ads. Bastards are tempting me to go RAID 0+1 in my new rig....

Go for it. It's the [H]ard thing to do.

Looks like I'm gonna be getting myself some WD1200JB loving. Thanks for the heads up, I need a second HD in my new system.

You could probably use some kind of a converter on it and put it on a SATA port. Wish I had the money for it :(

umm...don't do it...0+1 is silly...if your going to go that far go 5.

thats just my opinion. But generally 0+1 is laughed at.

yeah... good idea there.
lets use up one of our sata ports only to have 120gb at 8.9ms seek times
the whole point of the sata drives to me is the 5.5ms seek times. and the sexy slim cables.

I don't hear anything...

If you are running a server 0+1 might be bad. If you are a home user that buys a mobo with raid (all raid mobo's have raid: 0, 1, 0+1...not 5) then use the 0+1 don't buy a expensive card that gets you raid 5 it is just not practical.

or maybe he ran out of ide channels to plug it in and he only has sata channels open

There are legitimate reasons to put it on the SATA port. Most boards have fairly scarce IDE space without having to add another card in. No need to thread crap.

If I were to go RAID 5, it'd be SCSI. I don't know of any Mainboards with an integrated controller that do PATA RAID 5.

I'm about to build a new rig around a LanParty NF2U w/ 1GB Mushkin PC3200 and an Unlocked Barton 2500+. I already have 2 WD 120GB SE's, but running RAID 0 and having a drive fail does not appeal to me. I'll probably go BB with the CC ad listing to get a pricematch - I won't have to eff with the rebates. Maybe even get the 110% PM outta them. For grins I'd bench it at RAID 0, RAID 1, then RAID 0 + 1 and compare.

and those of you who think 0+1 is silly, I fart in your general direction.

Sounds like what my Mom said when I bought my first 2 WD 250s. :D
She just rolled her eyes when I purchased 2 more. heh

And yes, some people need the space.

The WD1200JB is an excellent IDE HD. It held the performance crown on Storage Review when it was just released. I have the 160 gig version, it's very good.

I love this drive. I've had an 80 GB SE for about a year in my other machine and it's a great drive as well. They aren't the fastest thing around, but I don't know if they can be beaten performance wise at the price of $.50/GB.

well i went out today and got one, but theres 2 rebates.

1. $20 dollar rebate and 1. $50 dollar rebate.

but both em the rebates need the original reciept and upc...how can i send in the rebates if i only have one reciept and one upc? do they except copies?

read teh faq

actually its not in the faq anymore, guess I deleted it, oops.

anyway, send the copy to CC, the original to MFR

I had the CSR print out 2 receipts, and one of the rebates clearly says that you need a copy of the UPC (the $20 one)

Compusa currently has a Seagate 160gb 8MB for 79.99 w/rebates. Just thought you all would like to know:D

FYI they are no longer SE.

The ones formally known as SE arent anymore, so they have the 1 year warranty instead of the 3 on SE drives.

Sorry for the error. I'll change the first post to inform people it's just a one year warranty.
