what is your power supply? Have you tried to connect other power cables to the vid card? It sounds like a psu that cant handle the power.
Check to make sure the vid card is firmly/correctly seated
If you have another board or friend that will let you check parts in his/her computer - try the vid card with another board -
see if it works there if not rma it -
if it does then try another more powerful psu - if that doesnt fix it - update the bios on the motherboard - if that does not work then prolly bad motherboard...
Hope this helps

With my 9800 Pro, you have to have the power cord go from the 9800 to the HD. I'm sure the same applies here.

hmm, i'm almost positive this isn't required. i'm sure ati just suggests this to end users in their manual to make it easier to hook up.

Nihilanth99 is correct. I think they just say that to give people with little computer knowledge a frame of reference, as opposed to saying "connect the video card connector to any four pin molex connector", which could confuse some people.
The 9700 is a power hog, and having it connected to the same lead as your hard drives can cause problems with your hard drives (as evidenced by some threads here of drives dying due to the power drain from a 9700), or the video card not performing properly (I had that problem with mine, ie, not booting, crashing). I had always had my 9700 connected to the HD power lead on my 8KHA+ with no problems, but when I put it in my NF7-S with my Master drive installed on the SATA, (the SATA convertor draws additional power) I started having problems. I switched to a different lead for the 9700 and have had no other problems so far.
