i responded to a pm too in depth. basically content, set it up nice... i forgot to add:
get meta tags for keywords, descriptions and a basic sitemap. don't go nuts. not having a sitemap didn't hurt business i worked for.
getting meta tags for webmaster ownership helps a bit to. another secret is to subscribe to all your own rss feeds so your updates are indexed quicker (for instance signup for google reader then subscribe to your mutliple rss feeds from your site)
multimedia content is much more successful. my plain text site gets 50 hits or less a day compared to a more digital site.
