Yeah I'm waiting for a pair of antennas to arrive from ebay now.
A new issue I've noticed. On the Realtek control panel, under Advanced Settings, I do not have an option to auto-mute the rear output when I plug something into the front jack. So when I plug headphones up front, I get audio from...
I just got this board a few days ago.
My Wifi reception is really bad compared to my previous Alfa 150n USB adapter, so I temporarily switched the included antenna to use one from the Alfa, and another from an older USB adapter. Signal is slightly better now, but not as good as the Alfa.
I'm...
Thanks for the tips.
I'm a little curious why my Windows 7 installation did not automatically disable defrags and superfetch for me. Could this be due to having a secondary HDD connected as well?
Anyway, I'll set them accordingly and also check out the Samsung Magician software.
J Macker: Yep, I've always use AHCI and I noticed the Z87 mobo defaults to it anyway.
evilsofa: I just did a fresh install of Win7 Home Premium x64 and indexing/defrag were still enabled on my SSD. I turned off defrag, but I've left indexing on for now.
Thanks, sounds like we shouldn't overthink things. :)
KingIcewind: I have disabled hibernation which is something I prefer anyway, but I'm in the camp of letting Windows manage my page file. I guess I'll just see how it goes.
Distance to my router is probably only about 20+ feet, but there are a lot of walls, so that explains the typically low signal.
mwarps: The antenna that came with the mobo did not indicate that a specific cable has to go to a specific port. It also never indicated which port is for 2.4GHz and...
I just got my first SSD, a 840 EVO and it's great. 10 sec boots and snappy responses everywhere.
So far, all I've done as far as the SSD is concerned is to disabled scheduled defragmentation (plus also to not run any manual defrags on the SSD as it's not needed).
Are there any other...
I just switched to a Z87E-ITX mobo that has a Broadcom 802.11n/ac dual-band WiFi card on board. It has 2 antenna ports on the rear panel and the standard antenna provided is a little box shaped thing that connects to those ports.
The signal quality is pretty bad, so I switched it over to...
kametsukida: No, they don't. I'm aware I won't be getting full speeds, but as I understand, it'll still be a massive improvement over a HDD.
I also plan to move to Haswell once the i3 CPUs are released, so an SSD is one of those things which I can upgrade now and bring along to the new build.
I've just realized the Plextor M5S is only about $20 more than the 840. That's a MLC NAND with a Marvell controller. Would that be a better choice compared to the 840?
I read something about this and their issues with TRIM. There's a fixed firmware now, but yeah, it apparently took them ages to get this out at the time.
Thanks for the input. I guess it's repeated here that Samsung is the preferred choice.
I realize either is gonna be a huge upgrade over my 1TB HDD right now, so I'm not too worried. Do you reckon $170 is a good price already? I haven't really seen the 840 250gb go lower than that.
I'm thinking about moving on to an SSD for my aging Clarkdale system below. I'm planning to go Haswell ITX at some point, but I'm in no hurry for that as I rarely game much anymore nowadays and my 5770 seems to handle most games fine at Medium settings @ 1080p.
So, I want a 250GB SSD and...
Hi guys, my setup is as per my sig. It's obviously a few years old now, however I only really started noticing instability in more recent games. I have always been running at these sort of specs:
CPU multi = 18
BCLK = 160
i3-530 running @ 2880MHz (actually underclocked slightly)
IMC...
