I assume you want gigabit? Do you need it to be a managed switch? On ebay you can snag Dell Powerconnects (2724 or 2824) which would give you gig and layer 2.
Qnap and Synology are going to be your best bets at that price range. Throw a external usb drive onto the NAS that it backs up to and enjoy.
Unless you want to roll your own box and run something like freenas.
I get where you are coming from but you want your ESXi box to be fairly stripped down. I don't want a webserver running on each host. Just opens too much security issues on each host.
Possible botched rootkit or permission elevation attempt? Though I think that is really unlikely. You have one box open to the net. They are going to look to root that then move to the others.
