Google ABX Blind testing and read up on the psychology behind it.
As to the rest I am preparing some comparisons.
Never have I said in the thread that aggressive matte finishes don't affect IQ negatively. Everyone seems to be hellbent on matte vs glossy when there is an in between that I am...
8000 series samsung lcd and plasmas from the past decade. And I never said AR film, just not glossy. And that you will never see the kind of coating thats on a flagship TV on a sub $1000 monitor so its really a moot point to be discussing TVs at all in this thread. Nor is it applicable to...
Right because volume level matching isn't critical to ABX blind tests and TV/Monitors aren't calibrated in showrooms for brighter/vibrant (read poorly calibrated) colors to attract people to buy them. I suggest you actually research on A/B and ABX comparisons and the tricks the human brain plays...
You guys are comparing displays without correcting the calibration. Of course all else equal they will be different. The coating affects the optics. Doesn't mean worse, means different. Which means the calibration needs to be different.
Calibrate the displays and there will be minimal color...
TN, VA, doesn't matter. You take two TN or two VA displays side by side with the only difference being glossy vs matte and you will notice the glossy version has more contrast shift. I have plenty of TN panels with matte coatings that do not exhibit any noticeable contrast shift.
And exactly...
??? what? glossy panels have more contrast shift than matte. Easy to see just going to any store that has a selection of screens on display.
Exactly.
Even high end expensive optic AR coatings arn't immune to direct reflections. I'm talking the stuff that comes on $10k+ lenses.
Matte finshes...

I dunno I have had so many issues with DP over the past few years I have grown to hate it... which is saying something cause I really hate HDMI.
Yeah I don't concern myself too much with contrast ratios. What I look for is the absolute black levels. If the display can achieve 0.05 cd/m² or better then I am happy. 0.01 or better and I am really happy :) (aka my plasma TV)
Can't wait for OLED or true QLED to become mainstream in desktop...
First thing I did was make sure I had full RGB set when I plugged in HDMI. Its not color or black levels that are better with HDMI, its the pixel mapping.
ie. on boot the display port connection has a ton of lines and text is super blurry. via HDMI it looks smooth and normal. In windows the...
Good to hear there is possibly a future for IPS with good black levels. I like IPS other than their black/grey response due to glow, poor contrast, etc.
yeah its definitely a VA characteristic, but these are especially bad. Didn't bother me when I got them but I've grown to hate it. My C24FG70 has it to some extent but not like my old one did. Sitting head on to the monitor at 24" from the screen I only see a slight contrast shift on solid grey...
