GIGABYTE RTX 4090 GAMING OC 24G - Random Black Screen When Gaming

I got the GIGABYTE RTX 4090 GAMING OC 24G back in November.

Everything seems ok but when I was playing Death Stranding a lot I'd randomly get back screens but only while in the menu.

Now I'm seeing the same randomly in Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. Again it's almost always when on the menu screen. I'd under clocked it to lower the fan noise but it's still happening even after putting everything back to default.

It's hard to Google or otherwise search for the issue as there was a known black screen issue with the 4090s that was fixed with a new firmware. I've installed the new firmware but I think the issue I'm having is unrelated.

Seems like maybe the card is having issues when the GPU powers down in menus when the main game is not running and pushing the GPU?

I thought I had checked recently for a new driver but I see one (528.49) came out on 02-08-2023. I'm still on 528.02, is it still an issue in the newest one?

The newest one is worse than the old ones. I'm still using it since it doesn't happen to me if I leave HDR enabled, but if I switch to SDR I get the random black screens.

Another workaround is to set Prefer Maximum Performance globally from what I've read on reddit.

I just got my 4090 today and now I see this. The shitshow that is pc gaming never ends it seems.

Hmm.. so it is a hardware issues then. :( I'm on an Windows 11 install that is just used for gaming. The 3080 never did this. ???

It's still doing it.
Just played the free Frostpunk demo over the weekend and it did the same thing. Black screen randomly when I'd go to the in game menu. It's odd that like other games, all is well for some time, then it starts doing it often.

I sent in a support request to GIGABYTE about a week ago and have not gotten a response.

When you say "black screen" - do you mean it's totally blank for an extended period or time or it's just blinking off for a 1/2 second? The blinking thing has been going on for a bit. I first started encountering that back in November and it happens across both 30-series and 40-series cards on certain monitors. If it's just full on going black for a while, different story.

Well if it's a driver issue you will just waste ~3 weeks sending the card in and them sending it back saying they found no issues with it.

What does event viewer show you ?

I had this issue randomly on an EVGA 2080 TI and nothing would fix it. I thought it was some kind of compatibility issue on my PC but I never encountered that on any other 20, 30 or 40 series card before or after.

Never saw this until replacing the MSI RTX3080 with this new GIGABYTE RTX4090.

It just goes black for a second or two and when it really gets going it will happen about half the times I go into the in game menu. I have seen it while in game (not at the menu) just a few times.

I know, I just thought they would at least respond with a: "Do you still have the issue after reinstalling Windows?"

have you tried full power mode in the nvidia control panel? tried swapping cables/monitors?
NVIDIA GeForce Driver Power Mode Settings Compared (thefpsreview.com)
It was set to Normal, I'll try it at "Prefer maximum performance". I don't have any other options, just those two.

I'll have to check the next time it happens.

Have you tried swapping with a different DP cable?
The monitor and DP cables are new from about the time I got the RTX3080 and I never saw the issue until replacing just the card.
I feel pretty good about the cables as I use the same setup for work and it only goes out when playing a game and 99% of the times it goes out it's when you switch to the in game menu.
I would be interested to see if it happens on a different display but I can play one day and never see it and then the next day see it many times.
It would not be fun to move all the displays around and then play for a number of days and maybe never see it.
Can you mirror while gaming? I wonder what would happen then?

Try with Win10, I don't have problems with it and the lastest 4090 drivers...

Not sure I want to install Windows 10 just to see if the vary random issue changes.

Still not update to the Gigabyte ticket from 3/4/2023. :(

Does windowed, full screen, or exclusive full screen make any difference?

Are you sure it's not your ram? try another driver and see if it goes away completely.

Not that I saw but will try that if I have another game that shows the issue. Right now I'm on A Plague Tale Requiem. Not seen it do it.

Could be but again, the RTX3080 never did this.

I would try the cable, they are definitely not all created equally. 4K 120+ with HDR is past the 48gbs limit. I had the same issues with my 4090 until I ditched the ones that came with my screen and went to a certified 8K/48gbs HDMI 2.1 cable since my FO48U supports it. I got a monoprice 10' one for like $20 and I haven't had a single black screen since. It drove me nuts, I would have to unplug and plug the monitor 3-4 times a day.

Reinstall drivers - clean install.
Turn off any eco mode bullshit. Set max performance.
Try a different DP or HDMI cable.
Try a different port.
Try reinstall of windows.

If you still can't solve it then RMA.

FYI - I have not faced this issue once even with any set of drivers in any games since owning the 4090. Definitely doesn't seem like a "driver" issue. Hope this helps.

Since I swapped GPUs this morning and finally ran test / gamed for a few hours... I do not see this issue.

My workflow was to pull the old GPU install the new GPU, and play... As for HDMI cables (LG OLED user here), my initial cable "supported" 4K/high refresh rates, but I kept getting random black screens. After swapping to something else, all those issues went away.

I understand but I got new DisplayPort cables when I got the new display some time ago. The old DisplayPort cable could not max out the display. No HDMI 2.1 ports and the 3080 was fine and the 4090 is fine but not in some games and 99% goes black when going into a menu in game. I've never seen it do it when at the desktop and I work 8-10 hours a day. If it were the cable it should do it randomly all the time. I run the desktop at the same bandwidth requirements. 4k, 144Hz, 10-bit color 4:4:4 chroma.

This Windows 11 install is just for games and nothing else. I could try a reinstall at some point but I don't think it will matter.
Gigabyte finally got back to me after 3 weeks.
Set power management set to maximum performance to see if issue fixed. - I just did that the other day and with the current game it's not done it yet.
Make sure wattage of the power supply if it’s sufficient ( 1000W or greater - It is.
the 16 pin powers input on the card are correctly connected. - It is. I even got one of the new Corsair cables just for the 4090.
Monitoring GPU temp if overheated. - I had it underclocked at first for fan noise and the temps seems ok.

Try turning off XMP in BIOS or AMD equivalent.
I could try that. I started a Prime95 run last night and all is still good and no overclocking of CPU/GPU or anything.

Again, I'd think it would happen all the time as the bandwidth I'm asking of the cable never changes. But I'm only seeing the black screen in the in game menus.

I thought so too, and I was wrong. Best of luck, hopefully you don't have to RMA the card.

As it shouldn't, well I would be curious to see if you see a difference between full-screen and windowed. But since you haven't been having the issue lately, hopefully it is solved.

If it starts doing it again I'll try that. It's a pain though as it's random to begin with and I only see it while gaming and I only do that on the weekend. I don't really want to play a game (for many hours) I've finished to see if it comes back. I think I'll put the NVidia power management back until I find a new game that has the issue.

Thanks for the input but with my limited understanding of low voltage data cables, it just don't seem likely that a cable will cause a black screen, only when playing game and only with going in and out of menus. I could see it being the driver or power setting or something to do with the GPU ramping up and down. The cable is just passing data and if there is too much noise or the cables is too long for the amount of data you are trying to get through then you can see drop outs. Same thing happened when I got the first HDMI 2.1 card and used it on the LG C9 TV and tried to use 4k 60 or 120hz. When you used something needing more bandwith then you get the drop outs. Maybe the cable can do 4k 30 but you try 4k 60 and you get random black screens and then 4k 120 and never get a picture. The desktop is asking for the same bandwidth if I'm playing a game or not. The cable don't care.

I just did a new Windows 11 install this weekend with all the updates and played Orcs Must Die 3 with a friend for an hour. I had one black screen for a sconed.

Last week on the old Windows install I played a A Plague Tale Requiem for many hours and finished it with no black screens. ??? :(
