Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

Oh, that's way out dated. It's $112 million in 2022 with a handful of days to go still. It's pretty insane how much money a tech demo is bringing in. Maybe someday it'll be enough of a game for me to go play, but, I've wasted enough hours with it for the foreseeable future.

I have to assume at this point it is mainly returning "customers". They struck gold, but I suppose it is like free to play games. People pay a lot of cosmetics and in game trinkets. Even if it wasn't intentional this game will end up being pay to win at this point. The guy who dropped $400 on a 2-3 good fighters will beat down the guys who buy the basic game package with the starter ship.

$400? You're joking, right? Go WAY up from there son.

They sell out of Javelin/Idris/Kraken each year. That's $2700/$1500/$1750.

What does that even mean? It's a digital "asset". There is no quantity other than artificial scarcity. How many ships is that per year?

I don't think those are fighters though? But I suppose at this point everyone may have a capital ship or two.

Anyone else notice that whenever someone asks if they should try SC out, a supporter usually comes back with "wait for the next patch because....."?
In the interest of being fair, do you notice how every time anyone posts in the thread everyone who wants others to hate it as much as they do for some reason come out to all say the same thing they have said for hundreds of pages? :)

So some Star Citizen videos made it into my Youtube feed and I am tempted to finally give it a try. I know the money doesn't add up to the product available currently but it does look fairly playable as a space sandbox game. Anyone playing it and enjoying it?
If you can try it out during a free fly event to get your feet wet go for it. But those events are pretty rough the last few years with lots of players and performance issues. Game has a lot of potential and CAN be a ton of fun. But for me the last few years have taken several steps backwards with only a few forwards. I suggested free fly events because in something like this you need to know what to expect in current functionality which is going to likely be the norm for a while. If you can have fun with that jump in.

I am not sorry I bought in, I have always disliked stretch goals and the lack of management / project managers but I have had a massive amount of fun in various builds over the years. And equally a lot of annoyance and lack of ability to play with some issues but I knew the potential for fun and issues heading in so eh.

^Seconded, free fly events are often crash tests, but they are free so (shrug). When the game is working well it's like nothing I've ever played, when it's being a PITA it's not fun. It looks amazing if your system can handle it, and it will use all the CPU and RAM you can throw at it.

Hull limited per year - dunno, but estimates are a few thousand of each. At this point, the verse is going to be full of cap ships. At least the javelin doesn't come with guns till you find the things

Bingo. Fighters - heck, most folks buying in past base will have a dozen.

Yup. Dead on.
Anyone thinking of trying this SC out, RipSkin really nailed the biggest problem, SC has basically stayed the same broken mess with mostly empty promises being made for 10 years now.
Some things get better, others get worse. Some bugs make no sense, others... are logical extensions of new game features. The ones that make no sense are annoying as hell (The C8 door is broken - HOW?!?). The new features being buggy (I remember when death/healing first came out... yeaaaahhhhh) is ... well, kinda expected.

I ended up getting it. Got kitted out with basic gear, ran a few delivery missions successfully and then my ship randomly blew up on the last one nullifying all the gains from the day. I guess my thrusters were damaged and I ignored the warning. Ran a few more delivery missions today until the server crashed so I'll take a break. So far it's entertaining but there are lots of little things to get used to.

Random Comixbooks style screenshot dump incoming:

My Avenger Titan, a good little starter ship. The cutter and the MR were too ugly.

You see one mining outpost, you've seen them all.

Avenger is a great starter, you can do a little of everything. The ballistic gun does not have a ton of ammo, but can really shred your size and smaller. Plus a little cargo room is always handy.

How do you sell out of an asset that can be duplicated infinitely without additional cost? The rarity of this is entirely artificial. Frankly, saying they sell out of that it's limited is a fucking scam.

Precisely. If the game isn't worth trying now, that next patch isn't going to change that. People have been saying wait for that next patch like it will change everything. It won't. You are delusional if you think it will.

Hull limited per year. So sure, it’s artificial, but they’re selling hundreds each year somehow.

Looking a little further, they released ONE "major" patch this year that didn't really add any content.

Remember when 4.0 was going to be released and was ready to go 2 years ago?

All year was working on salvage (in PTU right now) and the new persistent object storage (been slowly working its way in as they fiddle out the bugs - having 50,000,000 empty soda cans turned out to be an issue in main areas from internal testing, or so they implied, so figuring out how to "purge" some of that is kinda important). All under the hood work.

Welcome aboard, BassTek! Anyone who is thinking about grabbing the game, let me know. In addition to the discounted holiday starter packages, if you're new to the game (ie have not activated a game package with a Star Citizen key on your account - Free Fly events and whatnot are fine etc ) make sure you get a Recruit A Friend code before you activate/buy your package - it will get you 5000 UEC (ie in game currency, permanent not alpha test money) AND during the promo before Jan 10th it will also get you a ship added to your account - the ARGO "Cargo" variant! It doesn't have to be from me, if you have a friend who flies just get a key before you activate your package so you get credit!

I also have some other extras including - A) a lot of old "legacy" era packages that come with game keys for both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 + other extras, sometimes even rare no longer available promo packages for cheaper or B) ability to grab Concierge paint kits included as a promo when buying a new warbond ship. Let me know what ship in which you're interested and, if there's a Concierge paint for it I can get the ship for you and you'll get both at just the cost of the ship itself. Just want the paint? If its available, I can get it for cost as well. Note: much like the ships themselves, the concierge paints are to be available in game as well this is just another way to acquire them.

You're sure going hard on the sales pitch.

Does anyone have a more legible list of all the current ships in game (or as a picture...)? The website is just that endless scrolling thing. I am curious as to how many they currently have or plan.

Ironically, it looks like the people having fun are staring at a loading screen the whole time.... so I guess it's pretty accurate lol.

Yeah. If people are having fun then great. People can have fun in buggy or unfinished games/tech demos. I know I have. But there are some obvious criticisms with the game. The amount it has raised, the constant dates being pushed back, and the state it is still in after over a decade. And with how much stuff they have to sell to keep the money flowing it is obvious this will become pay to win or pay to participate on top of the initial price.

Squadron 42 should have been out long ago. By the time part 1 is out, the real life actors will probably be dead and won't be able to reprise their roles. I suppose they might have been killed off in part 1.

Since early this year, Subscriber flair items have been dropping in game. These are the items that were originally added as part of the backer subscriptions and since early this year with 3.17 they started dropping in game - " As we’ve mentioned in the past, our goal is to make most offerings available to be earned in-game. For this reason, we’re excited to share that many of the Subscriber flair items have been added to the in-game loot table as a rare drop, starting in Alpha 3.17. More specifically, most pre-2022 items (those that can be player carried) have been added, with future flair being added after a 3-month exclusivity window.". Theres no reason to think that the Concierge bonus paints will be any different as they've stated that they want most things to be available in-game without pay exclusivity or advantage., even cosmetics. The entire paint system last I checked was on the roadmap for an overhaul to move from the interim "per ship, skin" system to a more universal "Pattern + materials necessary to apply it to a ship of a given size" system like was originally noted.

Don't get me wrong, I get the skepticism and if they go back on their promises about standard procedure being not relying on exclusivity for cosmetics or other game content alike etc...that's absolutely worthy of criticism, but its amazing how this game creates people who operate according to such a double standard. The amount of people who are absolutely livid about this that or the other with SC, yet completely ignore games that make exclusivity, obscene and predatory monetization their core mechanic along with a bunch of related ones(ie gacha anything, mobile titles, MMOs with shitty item malls , Genshin Impact ) will never cease to amaze me.

First few days have been fun but the bugs are front and center. I have a high tolerance for jank so generally I can deal with it; but when you have 3-4 missions in a row get bugged out to the point of non-completion and then the server crashes right before you complete the mission you have been trying to do for hours to get a level up it can be too much. The world still has something I really enjoy though so I'll keep playing for now.

The bad part about starting right now (besides the bugs and servers) is that there is a total server wipe coming whenever 3.18 hits. The good thing about starting before a wipe is that people have more money than they know what to do with so they are fairly willing to help out new players. Thanks to a kind player I was gifted credits to try a ship I was considering, the Cutlass Black. Unfortunately I don't do a lot of crew missions yet, so other than a bigger cargo hold it doesn't open up much to me compared to my Avenger unless I want to mine with a vehicle. But if mining is the goal then it's probably better to save up credits for a Prospector. Although then I think I still need a cargo ship to carry the refined ore, which means I need something like the Cutlass.

Anyway it is fun to play around with a bigger ship:

My new ship and I looted some armor from the bad guys but I ended up losing it when I blew up on an 890 mission.

Weapons, beds for two and a spot for a gunner. It comes with everything you need besides a toilet and a friend.

So CIG received $125 million in 2022 and had 861 employees, yet only put out one smallish patch all year. Oh, and they now claim Pyro will be released at the end of 2023, so only 13 years to add a second system guys!

It's 2023 and I have not seen a video of squadron 42 being played. How in the hell are we this far out without seeing real actual gameplay, not those pre made videos they released.
