Gateway 14.1 and 15.6 1080p notebooks for $99 and $139

Well yes and no... Acer bought them some time back, and I want to say they basically make rebranded Acer laptops as "Walmart exclusive" products, not sure if they still have the infamous cow box anymore though.
I have an older lga775 gateway that was after the Acer takeover and they did still have the cow logo, but just a regular box. I still remember when they were the first big PC clone company and were HUGE. I would have never thought they would have just turned into a logo after how big they were. All the systems in my university's computer lab was by them, and they weren't the only one. Of course, this was before Dell and HP started to hit it big on the desktop. I think IBM/Lenovo had even more marketshare than Dell/HP when Gateway was big. There were so many 'big' clone companies back then that were quality--compuadd, swann and a so many more in that huge computer shopper that was the bible of everything.

I have good memories of that phonebook. Bought a lot of good stuff out of it but also a lot of junk. That was the wild west.
It was an interesting time. Lots of little importers with motherboards brands that are more well known today than back then like Soyo and Biostar. But they were reliable too and did the job and hence the compatibles spread like wildfire, especially since you could build your own and customize it however you wanted. If you wanted it, it existed. Our 486 has a 12 isa slot board, which was before we knew we would run out of IRQs before slots--oops. Still ended up using all the slots though stuffing some extra fans in there to keep everything cool. I still remember the lady when we placed the order for the case and motherboard as my brother said she kept asking him 'you want mah-dum, you want mah-dum' (modem, lol) and he was like ummm...no. We got one from Dallas fax which was a solid company until they caved from the competition from USR which in the end bought out the originator Hayes and incorporated the Hayes product line into theirs. They were the greatest modems though, with their Courier v.everything still connecting at faster rates than any competitors, even Multi-tech. We only bought one issue ever and used that as our guide in our first build, with like 100 bookmarks for companies to contact for a quote for our dream system. It was nice when companies truly wanted this business versus now just trying to make something that is profitable to them and pretty much an overpriced pig with lipstick. I blame the 'home computer' fork in hardware development for that. 'Home' just allowed them to start making consumer crap and manufacturers soon had to figure out product lines for these two markets. It sucked because before there were just hard drives and interfaces and then it became 'types' of hard drives and interfaces with games being played behind the scenes or just bad optimization that made for some real reputation smashers like the IBM 'deathstar' drive and Seagate's terrible consumer offerings back in the day, who otherwise was the king of quality drives prior to that.

Oh man, what a throwback. I remember going to a Gateway STORE to pick out and purchase my first PC. I don't remember how old I was, but I do remember being AMAZED at the displays in there.

That was a good PC. Lasted us quite a long time IIRC.

But honestly, I thought they disappeared years ago.

My first Gateway was a P2 233 that I probably enjoyed more than any computer I ever owned. Played through most of the Monkey Islands with it and it was the first computer I put a graphics accelerator in. Monster 3D. OMG Quake 2 in Glide!!! Folks were buying Dell's but I always stood by the Gateways. Had a P2 450 after that which ended up being my college machine when I started. Ultimately Dell won the race but those were fun times.

I remember bringing those things to school and spending study hall just looking through them. I kind of miss those beastly books and trying to find what was the best deal.

Yeah, but we all know where going down this road of 'a little more for better performance' leads. :D
I get what you are saying, but those two are well below tolerable specs for smooth operation. I mean yea if you like systems that barely run. 4GB memory lol. The ones I posted for $199 destroy the other two for only +$60 and +$100.

Yeah, for $199 your link was a screaming amount of computing power. But that's of course why they've sold out.

I had to pick up an emergency laptop last night from Best Buy - a Lenovo for $179 with an Athlon Silver, 4GBs of RAM and an eMMC. We're struggling...

I like how the prices jump around.

This looks like the spiritual successor to the great Walmart deal on the Motile laptop. My wife has been rocking that laptop for a couple years since they were released... still feels plenty snappy.

Edit: The Gateway may actually have a worse processor with everything else looking about the same'ish. I cant find the exact model of the Motile Ryzen right now in my 3 minute Google search.

I don't know anything about the seller, but looks like the same Ryzen 3500U Gateway through Newegg for $179. I picked one up for my mom. I was going to try to stick some ram and swap to an SSD with her current laptop but... man.... it's just old enough... that this seems to make a lot more sense.

Ebay has lots of good newly used stuff. I bought a laptop there for $189 shipped about 3 weeks ago. Dell 5400 with an i7-8665u, 16 gb ram, 256 ssd, 14 inch 1920x1080 ips, a good battery and charger. RAM was in single stick configuration so once it arrived I pulled the model number with cpuz and bought another 16 gb stick for $27.

It didn't have an os installed but did have that on board windows license thing built in. I just made and install usb from Microsoft website using their tool. Took all of 25 minutes to do a fresh install.

Yep, that memory is ridiculous for anything higher than xp, but people are buying them hence people are selling them. I won't touch anything with less than 16GB anymore.

Yep, used deals are where the real value is at since a lot of corporate off-lease stuff is well-built enough to last another decade after it's in the used market.

engrish at its finest! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Looks like the silver still shows 259. The link lands on the blue one.

Edit: looks like silver is now sold by a 3rd party though...
I just bought one of these Gateways, not sure if still available. For the price it cannot be beat.

Restored Gateway GWTN141-10SL 14.1" FHD i5-1135G7 2.4GHz Intel Iris Xe Graphics 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Win 10 Home Silver (Refurbished)

EDIT: Looks like the price went up. I got it for $259.00

I'm still trying to figure out why Samir bumped this thread after over a month of inactivity...

VIP Outlet sells a lot of refurbed stuff on ebay. I've bought stuff from them before and I've never had a problem.

That's a pretty good price for an 11th Gen 1135g7/16G/512G laptop. I'm tempted to buy one for myself.

Edit: Nevermind...I hate those micro sized right shift keys. At least it's on the left side of the up arrow unlike that Razer Blade Stealth from a couple years ago.
