Odd, rear I/O is single audio 3.5 mm out. Could always get a soundcard with better audio than the Realtek. I have a ASUS Zonar great card.

You'll need to use the front panel connectors too, and tell the driver somehow (maybe a realtek utility or maybe their 'nahimic' thing. With 4 jacks total, you can still have a mic input if you need it.

I believe I have an old asus xonar DG somewhere, but looks like thats PCIE x4 slot, which this board doesn't have. I see some $40 sound cards that go into a x1 slot, but didn't want to have to go that route.

you can use the "mic" ones for audio?? I guess there should be 4 like you say, 2 front 2 back. Might not look great, but didn't know that this was even an option.

Yeah, that's the idea anyway. On my current Asrock board I can't figure out how to configure the jacks though, but all the jacks should be configurable in software, afaik.

It looks like it only processes 7.1 audio and probably sends it out of the HDMI port since there is no way to connect 8 speakers to the motherboard.

Thats a function of the video card and its driver, not related to motherboard audio.

I have never seen a motherboard without 7.1 audio channels on the back panel.
I didn't pay attention to it when I bought my AM5 motherboard: https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X670E Pro RS/index.asp

I have a logitech Z905 5.1 system that i'm connecting with the 3 connectors.
I know I can do SPDIF but that will be compressed.

The manual mentions 7.1, but doesn't explain anything: https://download.asrock.com/Manual/X670E Pro RS_English.pdf

help!
Looks like they went pretty 'budget' on the audio solution for this board. That's an older, lower level audio chip. You are probably best getting a decent USB soundcard/DAC.

I went and checked and all their boards have similar connections for x670e, even their highest priced Taichi one. Really odd.

That's interesting. I can't get the 3rd plug to the front since on the Z905 cable they're all pretty close together.
I'm thinking of trying to buy 1x of this https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=648 (seems like its the right cable) and using the 2 in the back and 1 in the front with this extender.
optical will sound fine

The actual quality seems OK, but it seems to be doing some odd stuff. Things that should be 2.1 are becoming 5.1 and sound a little processed / strange. Might be because of how these logitech speakers are handling it and not because of it being optical.

Another thing I found was

It seems most pcie sound cards are many years old and aren't always compatible or have good software, like this one, (although it's a hell of a price vs new MSRP):

Yeah, that should work. If I were you, I'd try to get the outputs working with your speakers plugged into the back and some headphone or other plugged into the front, and make sure you can configure the jacks appropriately. Then you don't end up with that cable if it doesn't help you.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

Just tried this. Great idea!

This is what comes up with headphones in Front, and it seems to work:
