I don’t see any good reason for a company to walk away from a market worth billions of dollars in revenue that they have 80% control of. I mean they’re selling every 4090 they can make and they cost $1600.

Nvidia isn’t raising prices of their graphics cards in some weird effort to make them so expensive they can exit the market. If they didn’t want to play in it, they would just leave. They’re raising the prices because gamers have demonstrated they’re willing to pay. That’s the long and short of it. That’s why they launched the 4080 at $1200. This looks like it was too high, so I expect the next launch to be lower, just like we saw from Turing to Ampere, but they have proven people will gladly pay $1600 for their halo gaming product.
I expect we might see the 4080 sell better once AMDs card are out in the wild. The $999 XTX won't be found anywhere after launch and the $1200 4080 will look a lot more appealing next to a $1200 XTX for those that would choose NV over AMD at same price points.

What motherboard and memory are you running?
I got the GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS ULTRA that’s on sale at Amazon right now for 199.99. Will need to update the bios before it will work. Was easy with the bios update plus thing. Memory I got some Gskill DDR5 6000 with 30-38-38-96 timings. From what I read it looked like around 6000 and tight timings would net you the best fps in gaming .

way over priced for a graphics card. 400 to 500 is top price a card should be. I will wait till i see that to upgarde my RTX2070s.

if it were 699 like the 3080 I would've taken the day off of work, drove to Cleveland, bought one, went to the national park near by, got some food, visited the city, drove home. I've driven out there to go to microcenter once it's a great little city but it's almost two hours away. However, I would've waited a few weeks until they were really in supply, I wouldn't sit over night for any consumer product.

The 4080 should be called the 4070 and cost $550, and a “real” 4080 (with 10-15% higher specs) should cost $700 — but here we are.
The 4080 is 50% faster than the 3080 which is more than we get in most new architectures. IMO The 4080 should have been the full 103 chip though at $799 and then the 4070 could have been a cut down 103 chip at $599.

You’re assuming that all happens. We don’t know what AMD’s launch supply will be, we have a potential coming recession, and sales overall have slowed in the entire sector. Ryzen 7000 series parts are already on sale and they just recently launched. If the 4080 won’t move now at $1200, it won’t suddenly move just because someone decided they would try to scalp the 7900XTX at $1200 as well. I mean you can’t get a 7900XTX at all right now and people aren’t flocking to buy the 4080, it won’t suddenly become appealing at that price point when the Radeon launches because the reason it isn’t moving is because people think $1200 is too high a price to pay for it.

Went to Best Buy yesterday. Stared at a 4080 for about 15 minutes and walked away. I'll wait and see what red team brings to the table. I have a 3070 but really a 3080 would have been what I really needed but with with the shortage like many I took what I could get and I was grateful for it.

They could make even more if they took those dies that were marked for gaming and send them towards the professional market. Why sell a $1000 gaming card where the same silicon could be sent towards a professional card they sell for $2,000-$10,000 is my point.
They can and do. Why make only $4 billion in one market when you can make $8 billion in two markets?

Are they? Or was that sarcasm. Just curious

Was at my local MC yesterday, buying a new Motherboard, CPU, and Memory. And just for fun looked in the video card section, there were boxes of 4080s on all three shelves. I didn't take an exact count, but easily a couple dozen of them. ZERO 4090s. Sales guy said now they get maybe 5 or so 4090's a week at best, and they sell out soon after store opens.

Looking on their site now, they state 19 of one model, and 4 of another model. Which is way down from last week, when they first released on Wednesday they must have had 150+ on shelves. They showed like 25 of each model type in stock at launch.

Curious how these get replenished this week and next? Was that first shipment on launch week everything they got and that's it till next year? Or will they get trickle in shipments here and there a little bit every week?

Glad to see these 4080's rotting on shelves at my local MC.
OTOH it's not really an expression of anything Nvidia wasn't anticipating since the extra $200 of fat in the price seems deliberate from every angle. They're doing exactly what Jensen said they were going to do on the last earnings call, which was focus on clearing out 30-series. 4080 drops to $999 either when market demand compels it to, or 4080 Ti is ready to replace it at the $1199 pricepoint.

Yes.

Its still a terrible price at $999 in my opinion, but this does make sense.

4080 pricing is just madness. I don't care how big a leap it is over the previous gen. That pricing tells us how they're going to price the entry level garbage that can barely keep up with 1080p, and it ain't pretty. If you thought the 3050 was a horrible deal just wait until we see the 4050.

They really should have released it as a $1k part. Between the 7900xtx, and the fact that a 4080ti is now either going to have to 'replace' and piss off 4080 buyers at $1200 - Or be even more expensive.. It just doesn't make sense. Nvidia is going to burn a lot of people buying these 4080's if they do either and is going to lose quite a bit of future business if they burn people like that. The plan here doesn't make much sense to me beyond just gouging people for one quarter - But that is very short sighted.

Okay; I thought everyone knew by now, but I guess not. So I'll just go ahead and quote our friend from another thread because it bears repeating some more I guess.
And this surprises exactly nobody, Nvidia priced this stupidly intentionally to appease the AIBs so they can sell off their 3000 series cards, anybody who would be interested in the 4080 is actively waiting for 7900xtx reviews.
I would be very interested to know how many 4080s Nvidia has actually sold to AIBs to release and what they actually charged them for it.
Announce the price high, and direct sales to the 3000s, once those are sufficiently cleared out of the retail channels drop the price on the 4080 and below to make them more attractive so they start moving again.
Really until AMD puts their cards on the market and gets them into the retail channels it's Nvidia's game.

Ok so the plan is nVidia will do a price drop in the new year? It'd have to go down to at least $999 if not what it should be selling at $899 MSRP. But by doing so you'll piss off all the people that already bought a 4080.

I don't ever recall nVidia doing a price reduction within the first few months of a new cards launch.

I could see nVidia be bullheaded and do nothing here. Release the 4070 @ $999 and then the 4060 @ $799

Then in a year the 4080 Ti FE comes out at $1399.

No one has said or heard anything about any plan. We just know why the RTX 4000 series is priced as it is. Why this is coming as a surprise to many forum members here is anyone's guess really, because it really has been said numerous times in numerous threads.

I won't give them 1400$ for a 50% upgrade. I'd rather buy a used car and put it on the road and provide transportation for someone. Which is eons worth it more than a video card lol.

Is “video card” still a favorable referral to the technology anymore or is GPU what is most trendy these days? I am concerned about ageism in the gaming industry and have wondered by when it’s no longer considered cool to be gaming based on the common opinions of Gen Z now saying 25 is the new 40. Perhaps I’ll be scaling back my enthusiasm in investing in the future of this video card hobby

Its kinda funny how so many people justified a $2300 geforce 3090 and like no one can justify a $1200 4080. Paid $1500 for my 6900xt. hopefully i can be buried with it.

Tbf quite a few people turned to mining to offset those costs. Ain't happening this time around.

Behind closed doors, I don't think most people felt justified spending 2300$ USD on a video card. Sure posting they have on forums yeah but I wonder what they thought of going to bed at night. No way in hell will I spend more than 800$ ever ever ever on a single video card. EVER. My 3080 cost me 700$ and there just ain't no way in hellz that I would spend 1400$ for a 50% upgrade in FPS. Ain't happenin. I'd rather go out and run 10 miles and get in shape than sit in front of a PC. Actually that is what I am going to be doing for the next year!

What I have now will last me 3 years. I ain't givin nv any more money. See what the 5 or 6 series cost. At this rate, 2.5k plus. Unreal.

I have a 6900xt, that i paid wayyyyyy to much for... but id be completely happy with a 6600xt for my gaming needs. DCS does look really nice on the 6900xt, with all settings maxed but i honestly dont game anymore. I enjoy mining crypto more then gaming, if were being honest.

I am in the same boat. I am 47 years old. My pc gaming days competitively are behind me now. When you hit 40, your priorities change. You want your health and house and to contribute to society and be loving and caring toward one another. It's just the natural part of our existence as humans on earth. Though I am happy with my setup. I won't be spending money like this for a very very long time. I spent it up front so I can relax, listen to music (play games once and awhile) and work on my physical health. I have the mind and body still of a very young person and I can run and work out like I was 18. So I am going to do that, while contributing to society, working and helping those less fortunate. And spending a couple of hours down time hour per day on my pc relaxing. I don't game much anymore but it's nice to have the hardware if I want to sit for a bit and do it. If I were 23, I'd be all over upgrading this and that. But at my age, I want to help and give back to those here who share our planet our in real life society. Anyways be strong and be loving, empathetic and compassionate. As you age things become clearer in the mind and spirit. Just in a different stage of life right now. You guys will go through it and see what I'm talking about. All love and heart!
