Did WD stop making 2.5 inch RED HDD NAS drives?
Is there any quiet 3.5" NAS drive that would match the quietness of my 2.5" WD RED drives?

I think they still make a 1TB. But as cjcox said, probably better off with an SSD.

I built my newest TrueNAS build last year with 2TB seagate 2.5" HDDs in an icydock 5.25" bay. While they are awesome for what they are, 2TB SATA SSDs are getting so cheap, they will be the basis of my next NAS build. I only have a couple of terabytes of data I keep at the house anyway.

If they are still making the 1TB they wont be for long. You can get 2.5" SATA SSD's for as little as $51 (Teamgroup on Amazon for example) compared to the $80 the 1TB RED 2.5" is going for!

I have these really old 2.5" mechanical hard drives, 160 and 200 GB. I don't really need them any long, but it seems like a real waste to just get rid of them.

About 3-4 years ago, I finally got rid of 4 Seagate 3.5" 320 GB drives. Too little to be useful and using up a drive slot in a desktop case.

I have a Synology 4 bay full of 3.5" Reds sitting on a shelf about 4 feet from me. There is nothing noisy about them at all. Either step up to 3.5" for capacity or do like several others have suggested and migrate to SSDs.

Wow I'm so surprised. If SSD is OK for NAS now, I would totally prefer that over mechanical drives. I had never considered SSD because last time I built a computer, SSD was only something you put your OS and other software on, and HDD were for data storage. I just assumed this meant that SSD is not reliable enough to trust for data storage or NAS use. But perhaps it was just because SSD was too small/expensive. Maybe SSD has improved since then. I don't recall any NAS SSD existing before.

Thanks, this is a great idea! I may just go for SSD!

Thanks. I don't need a lot of capacity. My Synology 2-bay has two 1TB 2.5" WD RED HDD in RAID 1 storage pool and it is only at 9% usage. So I might even go for two 500GB WD RED SSD and still be way under what I need.

I need to buy a storage drive for someone doing video editing. Should I go for HDD or SSD? 1TB SSD is still expensive.... but, the price gap is lowering, somewhat. The larger HDD 3TB+ is still better /TB but less than that - 2TB HDD is $100 - $110, at least here. A cheap TLC 1TB is $70.
